Great, in my younger years I used to watch this series every sunday, it was titled "Der Doktor und das liebe Vieh", when I hear the theme, it's like being back at our old comfortable couch in a protected world, where I wasn#t aware of anything evil. But many things changed from then to now and thats it, what makes this theme so special

A very cosy depiction of veterinary practice, a profession that in actual fact has a very high suicide rate. Robert Hardy played Siegfried Farnon in this series, a name just as improbable sounding as Cornelius Fudge.
The only person that was irreplaceable on this show was the housekeeper Mrs Hall, played by Mary Hignett who died in 1980 shortly after the third series was filmed and she was scheduled for a hip replacement operation, but the doctors convinced her to have a riskier 'double' hip replacement rather than the single..Sadly, this is believed to have led to her untimely death..Feckless Tristan got on my nerves a bit, especially in the later series as he never grew up did he?
This was a great series..I hadn't been born when Carol Drinkwater played Helen, but was a small child when the series came back in the late 80s with Lynda Bellingham taking over the role of Helen and doing a good job..I have seen the early series after recording the show off the UK satellite channel Yesterday, where it has been repeated a couple of times and the master tapes are now quite poor quality.
They really dont make them like this anymore such a shame allthough I have heard a little rumour that they are going to remake some episodes dont know if any one else as heard anything. Also we went through the little water splash featured in this video brought back happy memories.
@cometcrasher Its spelled Goathland and thats where Heartbeat was filmed All Creatures was filmed in the main in Askrigg havent been to either yet but will be doing next week we are on holiday up there again and i believe neither of them have been modernized that much which is nice
@kevinmin12 I wish they would not remake this series. In my opinion they could not do it justice. They just need to rerun these wonderful episodes again once in a while. I would love to go through that water splash!
@LoreneFaith we went through watersplash yesterday and visited the herriot centre in thirsk really enjoyed both oh also Askrigg and Langthwaite which is where the bridge is in the opening sequence, will be posting some pics on flickr when we get home probably about tuesday next week ( search for 550dkevin)
My wife & I have read all the books & have a full set of videos of the whole series. We stayed in Askrigg overnight when they were making the very last Christmas episode in September 1990. We have an old classic Rover which we were touring in & saw Siegfried & co outside the pub where they were filming. We gave them a toot as we passed & they waved back. Unforgettable, brilliant lovely series.
I loved this show and read all the books. I also read a biography of alf whyte, which was rather grom compared to the show, but, oh well. The show is great, the music is dear, and I love it all...
@joanne9716 ~ One of the very places I would love to see one day. I've only seen a tiny glimpse of it, when we took the train up to Chester for a couple of days. ~I could never miss an episode when this series was on! :)
@LoreneFaith I used to watch this with my father. I agree with both of u. I used to love this program especially the one about Church bell ringing and breaking the stay on the bells.
This song gives me an odd sense of comfort, kinda like feeling as though I'm at my childhood home again. My mom used to watch this when I was a young pup, I never did, but I remember the music like it was some kind of perfect lullaby. Ive since watched the show as an adult and it's FANTASTIC!! My mom has good taste. =)
@PatrickRob82 I agree. This series is something that my Mom has also dearly loved and I did not appreciate it then as much as I do now. It is such a wonderful and heart warming series.
If you type in youtube ''all creatures great and small film 1974 making of photos'' you will see the real life james and helen herriott at .14sec, 1.44, and 1.55, immediately to the left of the bride. They often visited the sets, especially if something nostalgic like their wedding reenactment.. Very few public photos of Helen [Joan wight] exist. A handful exhibited at Herriott museum at Thirsk which Ive visited twice. Enjoy the photos
loreneFaith. Yes I know how u feel. I was actually born Blackburn Lancs but immigrated 1957. I always like to revisit and get into the beautiful countryside. Alas I couldnt live UK again. Weather too variable and too many social issues. The english character and dialects of old is fast disappearing. I remember my grandads broad lancs accent. He couldnt understand my aussie accent. James herriot once stated he disliked change, So do I. Such is life I suppose.
I still have the original publications of all his books from the seventies, I started reading them on a visit to UK in 1975. Revisited UK in 1989, 2004, and 2008 and visited Thirsk on all of them. Managed to find and visit most of the shots in the opening of the series. In 2008 spent a few days at Hawes in the Yorkshire dales. Lovely country. Life would have been hard for any farmer or vet in the old days. cheers.
@philpara1 It is a bit of heaven on earth to be sure! I envy you! I would love to visit Yorkshire and all of England one day. I just don't think I would want to leave. My English roots would be too deep in the soil :)
One of the great shows of all time. We Americans can't hold a candle to it. If you love the show you must read James Herriot's books, if you haven't. Many of his stories and recollections do not translate to the screen because he relates his thoughts and his compassion which don't always transfer well . All of the actors in this series are spot on to Herriot's descriptions of them and the casting director should be held in the highest regard.
I should have added ( no more room) re the dvd of James Herriot's Yokshire can be bought at Amazon.co.uk. Make sure if you are in North America you order the North American version as the pal system in Europe will not play on dvd players in North America unless you have an all region dvd player.
As a british ex pat living in Canada now for 36 years we have visited Yorkshire many times, we have stayed in Askrigg where Skeldale house is in the series and will be going again next year. It really is as beautiful and magical as it looks and every time we go we discover somewhere new and revisit favourite places. Yorkshire is the only place in England we will visit. Totally agree with SirCliveCalculator, I'd give anything to see this series on TV again. Thank you for posting this.
@mrsfboomer Hello, how lucky you are that you have been able to visit this wonderful place. I dearly wish I could do so someday. There is so many places in England that I would like to see. Bourton-on-the-Water in Cotswold is actually an ancestral place for me as well as Canterbury since I have a Bishop of Canterbury also in my ancestry. My roots are eternally calling me. I would love to see this series repeated on television again too. The shows that they have on now cannot compare.
@LoreneFaith .Thank you for your kind reply. I hope one day you are able to fulfill your wish. The Cotswolds are very beautiful also and you must be very proud of your ancestors in Canterbury. I would encourage anyone who has enjoyed" All Creatures Great and Small to" try to get hold of the DVD of Christopher Timothy's "James Herriot's Yorkshire". It is a wonderful mix of travelogue, story of the series and an appearance of Alf Wight, the real James Herriot. It is by Guerilla Films.
@mrsfboomer I am very, very proud of my British ancestry. The DVD you mentioned sounds wonderful. I will see if I can purchase it. Thank you very much for telling me about it. Cheers!
This is what I choose to think of when I think of Great Britain What I great show and what a great country. The little Island country that stopped the great Nazi war machine, GB held off the great Luftwaffe alone. while we in the US wrung our hands and debated if we ought to help or not. Yes we did send supply s and some men did join the Britt's ,
Does that England still exist ? Perhaps it is when times are tough that we see the true Character of a person or country, Think WC said something,
I am in the US but my ancestors came from GB a long time ago,
Only as somebody looking from afar, It seems that England has lost something, Not sure what it is, GB used to make the most sexy cars in the world !! Made in GB and nobody else was involved, I still believe that the talent is there but it seems that health and safety will never allow that talent to rise again
Orange vested people seem to be the order of the day.
Am I right ? God let the people in England craft again
@EarlRausch You are so, so right. We are run by other countries within the EU,
Health and safty this, health and safty that ~ We should start saying enough is enough and we will run our own country, But as usual we have not got the political back bone which we use to have., because the first politician that dares to say that will have the carpet pulled from beneath him. End of career.
Composer Johnny Pearson is master arranger. I ran across this when looking for cue music for a production some years ago. Think it was in the KMP library.
sorry,I actually have to diagree:I visited the market town of Thirsk,21 Kirkgate, where alfred wright(the real james herriot practised:I spoke to a fair number of his real patients-and even to his son:it very often was exactly like this!of course there was hardship too:hours on end, little money, hard work,...but the vet truely loved the fulfilling job and the stunning landscape!
GREAT RECOMMENDATION:The real James Herriot. BIOGRAPHY BY JIM WRIGHT the son of James Herriot
bullshit. honestly. i had to leave the practice and work in an owl sanctuary. the constant putting to sleep of animals began to make me seriously depressed and questioned my values as an animal care provider. my van would stink of dead animals on a hot day. also farmers were forever asking me to shoot ill stock rather than cure them. they could not be buried on active farmland due to defra rules, so they got slung in the van too. i was constantly covered in ticks. lice and suffered infections
I am really glad to hear this. I am sure that there is a lot of heartache for any doctor, of humans or animals. If you really love what you do and love the animals, you take the good with the bad.
well, they should. this is gushy nonsense. i went around the county in a black mercedes vito. by the end of each day i usually had four or five dead dogs in the back.
@Anfield4Ever Yes, I can understand that! I've started to watch the series when I was a little boy, around 7 years old. I'm from germany and I love the "special flair" of british productions like this series, Dr. Who, Torchwood. Miss Marple or Inspector Barnaby!
Every country has series and movies that are very good. And this here had something special because of Robert Hardy and Christopher Timothy! I like this two actors!
Is it any wonder that the crime rate is so high in America.
Nightly people are be murdered on television in the name of "entertainment." A daily diet of homicide, drugs and sex.
Then there are the "reality" shows. OMG!!! Please don't assume I'm a bible toting right wing Republican, I'm just a left leaning Democrat who is fed up with violence.
THIS VIDEO is real entertainment. Please, more shows like this and less death and drugs.
I agree with you. What is really sad is that people want the trash entertainment. I cannot believe some of the shows and movies that are popular now both in Britain and the United States.
me and my wife visited the yorkshire dales this year and we love it so much,we visited askrigg where it is shot and found the people very warm and welcoming goin back next year instead off going abroad
hi lorene, yes the yorkshire dales to me is gods country, so peacefulcharming very snowy inwinter but it is beautiful in summer it reminds me so much of the early fifties when i was a lad when everthing was not like it is today ,so violent
It is so sad to hear that an area such as Yorkshire would have any violence at all. It does seem that things were so simple in the 50s and early sixties. Things seem so ugly now and so complicated and stressed.
i love this series which is being repeated on one of the SKYchannels at the moment,i just wish life was like this these days if you know what i mean....there was a rumour they were going to bring it back for a one off special, hope it happens
oh thanks Loren for that great reply,i was born in 1956 but even back then life was simple but happier im sure from what i remember,we drove up to where they filmed this series last year and things like pubs/farms/the Drystone Walls/the roads/ are almost still in a time warp and believe me its great to see....
I was born in 1956 too :) I know what you mean about visiting places that still seem like going back in time and still have that old-fashioned quaintness about them! Love it!
Exactly. But then the episodes are also (most of them) very well written, and the actors are generally also above average - and there's a great underlying sense of humour throughout, which is very important, I think.
Yeah Tricky Woo was well pampered, Mrs Pumphrey called him Trickys Uncle Herriot, and I loved how everytime he went to Granvilles he always ended up drunk, and one time over there, he was playing the statue while Trystan was doing his Mad Conductor, and Helen and Granvilles wife walked in, and he stood up, fell over, looked up and slurred 'Hello Darling' lol
Just bought the complete set on DVD so i can watch them again.
It is characters like Mr. Biggins and so many others, including the animal regulars such as the very pampered Tricky Woo, that made this show so priceless :)
How sweet. My father also loved it first, and then I gradually sort of looked over his shoulder: what was this TV.series he was so charmed about?! And then I was smitten, too...
The last last series finished in 1990 which was series seven. All Seven series are available on BBC DVD andf in November (ready for xmas) they are bringin out a Box set of all the series.
The last episode of saw of All Creatures was ten years ago I think. If it's on DVD I might try to get it for my Mom, she enjoyed watching the series on TV. I think they aired it on PBS or maybe another channel.
This tune always pops into my head from time to time, glad you posted it here on youtube. I used to watch All Creatures just so I could listen to the opening.
Later, I watched Dr. Who with Peter Davison, and my mother would always say, "That's Tristan!" Thanks for posting!
I could not agree more with you. It was a honour to sit down and watch this on the BBC each week. Even though it finished as far back as 1990, how time flies, it is a treat to still see it on DVD. All Creatures Great and Small, a true classic, of that there is no doubt.
A Wonderful television series. We are currently watching series 1 on DVD, but we remember when it was shown on A.B.C. television here. With nothing but sport, and cop shows on television here, "All Creatures" comes as a breath of fresh air.
Check out our video tribute to this fantastic series. We tried to match the intro sequence using key locations from the TV series that we found with a little help from the locals.
I used to get up so early in the morning, just to watch this show (I HATE getting up before noon) I was possitibly in love with this. The books were also brilliant. Took me years to get my hands on them (I'm a long way away from europe) and I made the mistake of lending them. I miss both the show and the books T.T
I doubt I will be able to get the DVD's (I don't know why, but british tv is nearly impossible to get down here) But I sure will try!! And if not, there's always netflix, I suppose XD And yes, I never regretted getting up in the wee bit hours of the morning for the Skeldale boys XD
Yeah, but I'm in south america and at the moment, I dont have an international credit card, so, at least for now, I'm screwed XD I'll get it eventually, though.
Tess also told me Alf came to the B&B one day to treat their dog. She told him a guest was a huge fan and would be thrilled to meet him. He went to the breakfast room and chatted a bit without introducing himeself then left. He was so humble. When Tess came in they asked who that nice man was! I found an autographed copy of "James Herriot's Yorkshire" at Sutton Bank Top, which Tess also signed - as she is in it. She said he had signed it just days before he died. It's precious to me.
I watched each show many times! Visited Thirsk in 1995 months after Alf Wight (James Herriot) died staying at B&B owned by a family friend. She told inside stories-one day she and Alf were chatting in front of his surgery when a Japanese tour bus stopped to take a photo. They motioned for the two of them to step aside. They laughed to think folks ordered James Herriott himself to move so they could photograph the building! We also drove to the watersplash -an emotional experience.
Wow! So James Herriot was a pen name for Alf Wight? If only the Japanese had known that they could have seen, talked with and maybe even gotten the autograph of the man himself!
i love this show! im a teenager and my parents got me into it. i like the intro because when you see james and sigfreed(however you spell his name) laughing, after you see the dog and he smiles just after they stoop laughing like he JUST got the joke
For me, this is the best TV series ever. I first saw it many years after the first series were made.
The English rural life depicted in the series appears so authentic to me. The script is great, the acting and actors are wonderful, the scenery is so natural and beautiful, ...and the life in a general is shown in a such a simple and nice way.
This has been such a treat to see and listen to. Grew up with the series and let me tell you this is among the best that telly has to offer and it was made 30 years ago. It always did give me the feeling that everything was alright even if the economy then was not so good. Now the economy is even worse-wish the public telly stations would bring it back, sure could use All Creatures again. The BBC always did and still do provide quality programming. The U.S. is into the "look" and not quality.
I think television in the conventional sense has had its day. However I have reason to be optimistic. On Youtube there is a lot of creativity going on. Right now it's all quite low key and low budget. But the ideas, especially among young folk are as very good in their way as in any generation. This medium is developing and pretty soon the moguls in the entertainment world will realise this. A lot of younger people are now drawn to things we enjoyed at their age. :)
We need more shows like this back on. A cold Saturday night in front of the fire watching ACGaS would be a great night in. Possibly followed by Foyle's War.
Agrees entirely. There must be lots of wonderful unknown script writers and actors out there whose talents for this kind of thing are as yet untapped. We need 90% less 'reality' shows and much much more quality entertainment like this. :)
It seems that a lot of the present day audience wants mindless television like the reality shows. I would rather watch the old quality television any day.

@mrhomerbojangles Your welcome. England is a beautiful country and still quaint in my opinion.

EarlRausch 1 year ago
@EarlRausch You are so, so right. We are run by other countries within the EU,
Health and safty this, health and safty that ~ We should start saying enough is enough and we will run our own country, But as usual we have not got the political back bone which we use to have., because the first politician that dares to say that will have the carpet pulled from beneath him. End of career.
Respect and Regards from across the ocean.

As vets we provide care from birth to death;you know...thats the way the cookie crumbles !!
You see,the more dead bodies you see,the more you learn to appreciate life!!!
BUT:You have to be the "half-full-glas-typ-of-guy !!!
Please get yourself the biography,i spoke about!
I wish you a van with the mild fragrance of a promising spring-this was James Herriots favorite time !! Live-or at least die trying !!
Life is the best teacher-unfortunately it kills all its students......!

sorry,I actually have to diagree:I visited the market town of Thirsk,21 Kirkgate, where alfred wright(the real james herriot practised:I spoke to a fair number of his real patients-and even to his son:it very often was exactly like this!of course there was hardship too:hours on end, little money, hard work,...but the vet truely loved the fulfilling job and the stunning landscape!
GREAT RECOMMENDATION:The real James Herriot. BIOGRAPHY BY JIM WRIGHT the son of James Herriot
A must read!!!!!!!!
2233golf2 1 year ago 2
bullshit. honestly. i had to leave the practice and work in an owl sanctuary. the constant putting to sleep of animals began to make me seriously depressed and questioned my values as an animal care provider. my van would stink of dead animals on a hot day. also farmers were forever asking me to shoot ill stock rather than cure them. they could not be buried on active farmland due to defra rules, so they got slung in the van too. i was constantly covered in ticks. lice and suffered infections
ianupton 1 year ago
I am really glad to hear this. I am sure that there is a lot of heartache for any doctor, of humans or animals. If you really love what you do and love the animals, you take the good with the bad.
LoreneFaith 1 year ago
i was a vet in thirsk for a while. it wasnt like this at all. i mostly put dogs down.
ianupton 1 year ago
I am sure that the reality of being a vet is not at all as pretty and charming but that would make a rather morbid show wouldn't it.
LoreneFaith 1 year ago
well, they should. this is gushy nonsense. i went around the county in a black mercedes vito. by the end of each day i usually had four or five dead dogs in the back.
ianupton 1 year ago
How awful. I know that reality is very rarely as charming as in the movies and the plight of so many animals is very bleak.

Anfield4Ever 2 years ago
@Anfield4Ever Yes, I can understand that! I've started to watch the series when I was a little boy, around 7 years old. I'm from germany and I love the "special flair" of british productions like this series, Dr. Who, Torchwood. Miss Marple or Inspector Barnaby!
Exodianecross1978 2 years ago
Yes, the British makes the best crime series, my favorit is Adam Dalgliesh, and the Scottish series Taggart.
Anfield4Ever 2 years ago
Every country has series and movies that are very good. And this here had something special because of Robert Hardy and Christopher Timothy! I like this two actors!
Exodianecross1978 2 years ago 2
Is it any wonder that the crime rate is so high in America.
Nightly people are be murdered on television in the name of "entertainment." A daily diet of homicide, drugs and sex.
Then there are the "reality" shows. OMG!!! Please don't assume I'm a bible toting right wing Republican, I'm just a left leaning Democrat who is fed up with violence.
THIS VIDEO is real entertainment. Please, more shows like this and less death and drugs.
Thank you for posting this video.
hoesey 2 years ago 3
I agree with you. What is really sad is that people want the trash entertainment. I cannot believe some of the shows and movies that are popular now both in Britain and the United States.

me and my wife visited the yorkshire dales this year and we love it so much,we visited askrigg where it is shot and found the people very warm and welcoming goin back next year instead off going abroad
pdrinkwater1 2 years ago
Visiting Yorkshire would be going abroad for me but I would love to see England one day. It is such a beautiful country.
LoreneFaith 2 years ago
hi lorene, yes the yorkshire dales to me is gods country, so peacefulcharming very snowy inwinter but it is beautiful in summer it reminds me so much of the early fifties when i was a lad when everthing was not like it is today ,so violent
pdrinkwater1 2 years ago
It is so sad to hear that an area such as Yorkshire would have any violence at all. It does seem that things were so simple in the 50s and early sixties. Things seem so ugly now and so complicated and stressed.

I do know what you mean and I wish the same. Life was so much simpler than.
LoreneFaith 2 years ago
oh thanks Loren for that great reply,i was born in 1956 but even back then life was simple but happier im sure from what i remember,we drove up to where they filmed this series last year and things like pubs/farms/the Drystone Walls/the roads/ are almost still in a time warp and believe me its great to see....
mal334455 2 years ago
I was born in 1956 too :) I know what you mean about visiting places that still seem like going back in time and still have that old-fashioned quaintness about them! Love it!
LoreneFaith 2 years ago
I adore this series - I have a really weak spot for the opening/end themes, don't know what it is. Sort of optimistic and wistful at the same time.
pildskadden 2 years ago 2
I know what you mean, there is just a happy quaintness about them. It is charming and somehow makes you feel that all is right with the world.
LoreneFaith 2 years ago
Exactly. But then the episodes are also (most of them) very well written, and the actors are generally also above average - and there's a great underlying sense of humour throughout, which is very important, I think.
pildskadden 2 years ago 2
I totally agree :)
LoreneFaith 2 years ago
Yeah Tricky Woo was well pampered, Mrs Pumphrey called him Trickys Uncle Herriot, and I loved how everytime he went to Granvilles he always ended up drunk, and one time over there, he was playing the statue while Trystan was doing his Mad Conductor, and Helen and Granvilles wife walked in, and he stood up, fell over, looked up and slurred 'Hello Darling' lol
Just bought the complete set on DVD so i can watch them again.

That is so awesome! Great job! It is so beautiful there and it looks like it hasn't changed at all since the time of the series.

I used to get up so early in the morning, just to watch this show (I HATE getting up before noon) I was possitibly in love with this. The books were also brilliant. Took me years to get my hands on them (I'm a long way away from europe) and I made the mistake of lending them. I miss both the show and the books T.T

Well worth getting up early for. I never read the books but I love all 7 seasons of this show. It is available on DVD now.

I doubt I will be able to get the DVD's (I don't know why, but british tv is nearly impossible to get down here) But I sure will try!! And if not, there's always netflix, I suppose XD And yes, I never regretted getting up in the wee bit hours of the morning for the Skeldale boys XD

That is priceless!
LoreneFaith 2 years ago
I watched each show many times! Visited Thirsk in 1995 months after Alf Wight (James Herriot) died staying at B&B owned by a family friend. She told inside stories-one day she and Alf were chatting in front of his surgery when a Japanese tour bus stopped to take a photo. They motioned for the two of them to step aside. They laughed to think folks ordered James Herriott himself to move so they could photograph the building! We also drove to the watersplash -an emotional experience.
meanernmartha 2 years ago 2
Wow! So James Herriot was a pen name for Alf Wight? If only the Japanese had known that they could have seen, talked with and maybe even gotten the autograph of the man himself!

I do wish that it would be brought back to PBS again. I wish that BBC America would broadcast some of the classic British shows again like this one.

Phili4p 3 years ago
I agree, a lot of younger people do want the quality programming that we were able to grow up with. They are the ones that can change things.
LoreneFaith 3 years ago
I'm young, and if this series is what you call quality, we definitely would appreciate more of it!
ReikiH 3 years ago 3
We need more shows like this back on. A cold Saturday night in front of the fire watching ACGaS would be a great night in. Possibly followed by Foyle's War.
flyingscrapyard 3 years ago
Agrees entirely. There must be lots of wonderful unknown script writers and actors out there whose talents for this kind of thing are as yet untapped. We need 90% less 'reality' shows and much much more quality entertainment like this. :)
Phili4p 3 years ago
i'm surprised any one watches tv any more, it numbs the mind, alas programmes like this are a thing of the past.
mikemosocw 3 years ago
definitely agreed.

It seems that a lot of the present day audience wants mindless television like the reality shows. I would rather watch the old quality television any day.
