It's possible that Lorde didn't see Daly's reply as a full response but only as an acknowledgement.
I know I feel that way when dealing with white people. At times I feel they're careful to acknowledge the words I've used but don't actually provide a response to what was said.
Also since Lorde's letter was public, perhaps she wanted a similar response.
But her letter wasn't always public. She published it after '79 saying Daly never responded to her. Even in 82. I get what you say about how she may not have seen it as a real response. I don't know what happened between them between when they met up after this so a mystery still remains.
The fact that this came to light in 2003 and is still being taught errantly says a lot about womens studies courses. Serious study or conduit for political agenda?
I find it disingenuous at best that a self-proclaimed MRA is saying that women's studies is a conduit for a political agenda. One major point of reading all of this was to elaborate on how women's studies promotes an agenda that is apolitical and about discouraging political involvement.
Very interesting. And yes you're definitely right about Audre Lorde not taking the side of liberals and their bullshit. Ha, whataya know? They did use Lorde's letter in 1 of my women's studies classes which I still saw as racist 'cos all I see is tokenism, which I find offensive & a bullshit tactic that white liberals always use as a petty attempt to hide their racism (or sexism). As for Mary Daly being racist in her response, I'm not sure yet; I'll have to read through it carefully several times
There's another response in a later forward of Gyn/Ecology. Daly opened my eyes to my own racist blindness. As a philosopher she really was about discovering those subconscious attitudes and didn't put it past herself to be subject to the same brainwashing and ignorance as everyone else. If anything I think she probably took it as a learning experience. Her books she also said were works in progress-not the end-all. She helped me uncover my own inflicted ignorance- forever a work in progress.
I'm sure your familiar with Angela Davis? She is probably one of my Favorite people - Ever. Socialist, Feminist, and a Black rights activist.
I am familiar with Audre Lorde, but mostly with her poetry.

I'd need more context to judge the situation.

like I said I'd need full context.
it could been looked at as a token gesture.

Thank you so much for sharing this information, I also had no idea Mary Daly responded to Lorde's open letter.

That's really fucked up.
If what you are saying is correct she lied to push an agenda.
