I think is weird that american soldiers respect their flag with their hats on! There even a soldier that throws a hat to another soldier, so that he salute the flag correct. Here in Denmark you take the hat of in respect of the flag.

American soldiers, Marines, Sailors and Air Force keep their heads covered when outside. It is ingrained in basic training. If you noticed, the song is in two parts. For the first part you stand at attention, the second part you salute your flag as it descends the pole. Watch the video again and you will see them all salute after the trumpet starts again.
