  • @brignuk11 Ko Rangi Ruru Wananga Karaitiana te kaitito o te waiata Blue Smoke:

  • He tino kino tērā whakaaro. Me rangahau koe te hitore o tēnei waiata. You need to do the proper research about this waiata before making such a statement.

  • my grandadughter sang this at the RSA first in English and then in Maori there were a few tears shed. Beautiful song. Lovely melody

  • Beautiful song. thanks!

  • this song has reduced me to tears on fathers day.what memoirs this song has for a lot of people lol

  • It was the first recording by the NZ TANZA label, it was recorded 3 October 1948, processed 23 February 1949, and sold over 50,000 copies. That was a very large number in those days. It was recorded by Pixie Williams and the Ruru Karaitiana Quintette.

  • Blue smoke goes drifting by, Into the deep blue sky

When i think of home i sadly sigh

Oh I can see you there, with loving tears in your eyes

as we finally said our last goodbyes

And as I sail away, with a longing to stay

I promised to be true and to love only you

Blue smoke goes drifting by in to the deep blue sky

My memories of home will never diE.

    We're studying this at school.

  • @SQueezed01 I think it may be "as we fondly said our last goodbyes' but thanks for posting the lyrics. It is a heartbreakingly haunting song.

  • Karaitiana wrote 'Blue smoke' on the troop ship Aquitania, in 1940 off the coast of Africa, when a friend drew his attention to some passing smoke. During the war he served in the Middle East with the 28th New Zealand (Maori) Battalion. He led the battalion concert party, and he was one of the few survivors of its original 17-member choir. Although it was performed at troop concerts during the war, Blue smoke was rejected by London publishers.

  • "We were on the troopship Aquitania in 1940 off the coast of Africa when a friend drew my attention to some passing smoke. He put the song in my lap," said Karatiana.

  • Great Song and I did not know that the Fabulous Pixie was still with us...

    Kia Ora Pixie

  • anyone got the words?

  • whats the story with the vid bro, its cool but a bit random given the history of the song...

  • haha well tbh i had just got a new camera and was just messing around with the focussing and stuff, and at around the same time i remembered this song from a CD my parents had, i looked on youtube but it hadnt been posted yet. so eventually i uploaded the video cus the song made me feel pretty nostalgic about my childhood and the coromandel for some reason. so to answer your question yes, the shots are rather random but with the black and white filter it didnt really matter. there you go

  • @jonobroome Well this is my Daddy's song... Ruru Karaitian or fondly known as Daddy Karaitiana was my beautiful father. He was recdently on Nga Waiata o Te Iwi and my brother Ruma and Mom Joan were also alking about him on this. I love this waiata and wish you could have done it more justice with a more beautiful Video clip...lol But the fact that you posted this onto youtube is awesome. Thankyou.

    Sha

  • Not too sure sorry, but its so old that i suspect not.

  • fantastic video, i think it works really well with this amazing song :)

  • Thats my Nana's song!!! She is Pixie Costello now =)

  • Love this song....uniquely New Zealand... and Pixie Williams' version is the one and only one for me - it's such a special sound

  • Thanks so much for posting this song... Bless

  • Forgot to say: this is, to my knowledge, the first song ever recorded in New Zealand.

  • Good song, strange vid

  • It's a New Zealand song composed during WWII, so I suppose the point of the video is to highlight nostalgic NZ items.

This is the song I want at my funeral!

    Caro.

  • wtf?? lol
