  • ΑΡΙΣΤΟΤΕΛΗΣ...

  • The scene, where he and the boy first arrive to the Abby, when the dark bald one said to him...'I saw it as a blessing, that I learned you where coming. For this is a man that has knowledge of God, and of the evil one." way I see it,They flaunt invoking the enemy. Like that is cool....down low underhanded people.

  • I thought "Forest Gump" was in this???? hmmm maybe wrong movie......run Friar Gump, run!!

  • I LOVE THIS MOVIE. I first watched it in Osaka about five years ago with my bf at the time. I remember eating delicious noodles, fanning from the hot weather, and watching this awesome movie on our little tv. then going out for okonamiyaki and coming back to watch it all over again. sigh... fun times.

  • One of the more realistic medieval films I've watched

  • I'm about to read the book, got with me now. But I found this first! Supsose I read later, want to watch now :))

  • @Alexmuthfield

Definitely read the book. As good as the movie is, the book will give you a lot more detail and background to everything, plus a few more characters that are not in he movie.

  • The book is one of the greatest written in the 20th century, I surely love Eco's works! The movie has simplified the storyline and some possible levels of interpretation are completely missing but we cannot expect more from a mere film. I hope more people will read the book after watching it, that's all I can say!

  • An incredible film based on an amazing novel.

  • Ummm two men kissing

    no bueno

  • kiss on the mouth ?

    It's disgusting.

  • Who'd have fucking thought that James Bond would become a Monk after he retired...

  • this movie is actually scary. very good though

  • "Should weee, tell him?"

  • This movie is just awesome. And has many useful life lessons. One of my favorites.

  • Grazzi ħafna għal dan. Nitlob li pendlu Foucault Ser isiru wkoll. Thank you very much for this. I pray that Foucault's Pendulum will also be made.

  • Franciscans still exist today to provide an example of simplicity and humble service. The film and the book are a faithful portrayal of Franciscan thinking. Connery portrays the Franciscan (with his faults as well) superbly.

  • North Korean subtitle please

  • @peymaania Who says it hasn't already? Most people believe there are

Muslim "terrorists" to be scared of, when the only terrorists are those of

our own gov't WHO ARE STEALING US BLIND & TAKING AWAY ALL

    OUR CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS!

  • Awesome cinematography.

  • Where's the word "name" gone at 00:42? What is this?

  • @JaimeinUK It's like that when I watched the dvd too, weird.

  • this and the ninth gate have deeper meanings. but esp this which is about the courage to dare think for urself and to throw off superstitious baggage of xtian morons

  • I've read the book but I've forgotten whether I liked it or not. What I do remember is that I was put off by the author in the introduction swearing black and blue that he was just 'translating' an 'original manuscript'.

  • Movie still scares the hell out of me.

  • turkish subtitle please:P

  • fantastic movie!

  • Also, this movie had an impact on my childhood regarding atheism.

  • Is it the cinematography?

Whats the term im looking for? That this movie has so much 'atmosphere', gloomy, ominous, DOOOOOOOOOOOOM!

  • Umberto Eco

  • Poor sinners life. Profound to always remember that.

  • I love this sinister crush x

  • i don't know how many times i've watched this movie, i just love it;)

  • I tried to read the book, but Umberto Ecco has such a distinct and hard writting...it was rough to get from one page to another without consulting wikipedia from time to time...

  • I AM INSPIRED.... BY THE DEEEEEEVIL!!!!!!

Thumbs up if that should be an internet meme.

  • This is an exaggeration of what life was like in the "dark ages". Until the plague came along, life was only like this for the poorest of the poor, of whom there were plenty -- just like there are today. It wasn't actually overcast all the time in the "dark ages" with mutant dung farmers scrounging around in rubbish heaps all day :-)

  • @ijwi you're wrong. when 90% of people lived as peasants oppressed at will by knights who obeyed little law, i'm pretty sure life was dark and short, just as it is in much of the third world, like somalia, darfur, the congo, or afghanistan.

  • @ijwi I have to agree with ijwi on this. Even before the plague, life was very hard in these times. The infant mortality rate was extreme. Medical knowledge was scarce and people died young. Serfs were the property of their lords (no rights whatsoever) and they had to give part of their harvest, regardless of how little their small strip of land yielded that particular year. The church did try to curtail the worst abuses, but the monks did no work themselves and had to be fed as well.

  • @ijwi Most people living then were peasants and life in the middle ages was described as "nasty brutish and short" but that's from a modern perspective of course. People would not have had such high expectations of life then. Imagine living though with no medical services and no representation through voting. Life events would have beyond people's control and the vast majority of the population was illiterate so superstition would have been common.

  • @ijwi Yes, there is no doubt life was harsh in those times, but in medieval movies it is *always* overcast or rainy and the peasants are *always* dirty, toothless and deformed. Monty Python made fun of this in the Holy Grail where they are slopping around in the mud for no apparent reason. On the commentary John Cleese pointed out that they actually had good teeth because they had hardly any sugar in their food. Also, before overcrowding and worsening diets, they were about as tall as we are.

  • The music in the beginning is so creepy...I love it

  • why in 6:36 they are kissing in mouth????????

  • @MANofINACTION you don't need an astrolabe for that.... you need a compass. astrolabe measures

the angle between horizon and a heavenly body (a star... a planet, et..) which way you are facing is like

which way a ship is sailing.....to know that you use a compass.

  • we all creatate superstions when uncanny nature death occurs in such a remote time and place till this day.but also know that even till this day we would rather blame evil forces.and the fact of denial of what is in just historical human nature when comes to religion and morals that are always changed and twisted to 20th century mass hysteria.

  • Dude, one of the monks totally looks like Count Orlock! :O

  • Brother William would kick detectives lazy asses nowadays.

  • this movie owns

  • The best part of this movie?

It all actually happened 700 years ago. `;}>

  • @mooseasaurusrex all..... as in the flick? did bernardo gui die the way in the story?

  • @gyreenedoc No, nothing in either the film or the book is based on actual events. The original novel, however--which was quite different from the film--was meticulously well-researched in its details and historical background, although the events were still fictional.

  • Comment removed

  • @mooseasaurusrex No, It is pure fiction, according to Umberto Eco

  • one of the best medieval movies

  • I AM, INSPIIIIRED BYY THE DEEEEEEEEVIL!

  • the movie shows the catholic religion and the monks at the medieval age , it's scare !

  • sean connery is such a stud in this movie and i'd lick christian slater like a lollipop!

  • I've been looking for this movie since I was 12! I couldn't remember the name. Thankyou so much for sharing!

  • @MANofINACTION it's an astrolabe, used for all kinds of star calculations- and yes, to calculate qiblah. i'm sure there's much online about them, google is a better search engine than youtube comments.

  • this was an intriguing book. (although I hate it when people claim their fiction is the absolute truth, just to set the scene. - I found the whole - I just translated the manuscript a bit annoying.)

  • PENITENTIAGITE!

  • The only movie that depicts a - realistic and not stereotype - view of the midle age.

  • What was the relationship b/w the monks and the townspeople? It seemed to me by watching the movie that they forced people to give them their goods(food they grew)? or did they volunteer to do this? Im confused if anyone knows, I'd really appreciate ur help

  • Did they fish up the ugliest people they could find to be in this movie just to highlight Sean Connery's sexiness? Oh, Christian Slater's pretty too I guess. I mean jeez! I know this movie takes place in the Dung Ages, but people weren't mutants back then!

  • @nosorab3 Read the book.

  • Ron Perlman was Great in this too!

Just in case you are wondering WHY the one kissed S.C. on the lips is because scriptures say you are suppose to greet your brother with a kiss.

BUT GOOD LORD MAN! A simple peck would have done the job too! :)

  • Ron Perlman was Great in this too!

  • Christian Slater one the most handsomest faces ever.

  • christian slater.. one the handsomest faces ever...

  • @ANTIAMERICANCRUSADE

So probably like life in USSR! Let us not believe in the truth of pictures. :-D

  • τελεια ταινια!!!!!

  • @chriskampouras1985 είναι μια μεγάλη ταινία, πολύ καλά κάνει.

  • Who is the actor who kisses Sean Connery? He's always showing up in movies, giving awesome performances, but I never catch his name.

  • @amaxamon Michael Lonsdale, French Actor. Played the baddie "Hugo Drax" in James Bond "Moonraker"

Was also in the film adaption of the Le Carre book-turned-film "Smileys People"

  • sexy Christian Slater :D

  • there are a lot of funny looking people in this movie... what year was it made in?

  • @michellelee03 i am not sure... 1986

  • 6:05 An astrolabium an a quarter sector. Looks like a Gunter quadrant. But Gunter was 1581 – 1626. Can anyone explain?

  • @flexibartrampolin Yes , it's a movie, lol.

  • @Bautisnemo But a movie which is worth being watched many times and each time reveilling more details and hints that can also be found in the book. Sometimes the movie made me open the book again and read a passage again.

  • Thank you soooo much for this!! I'm reading the book in English and this really helps :)

  • Thank you sooooo much for this!! I'm reading the book in English, and this really helps :)

  • Compared with this movie, nowadays so-called

    "horror"-movies are kids movies.

At the very thought of the music I got goosebumps.

  • from an outstanding book comes one of my favourite movies. timeless masterpiece!

stat rosa pristina nomine, nomina nuda tenemus.

  • @ceerberos huh?

  • Forgot what this was called.

Medieval Sherlock Holmes. Adso is Watson's nickname in Arsene Lupin Vs. Herlock Sholmes.

  • thank you for posting this! You made it that much more convenient for me to do my homework!

  • Very symbolic for some of us.

  • After all this years, this movie still very fresh!!!

  • Humberto Eco´s masterpiece....

¿Why are the guys in Stockholm taking so long to award him the ultimate honor?

  • @pixelsilva humberto eco is nature's masterpiece

  • @pixelsilva because the guys in Stockholm are meaningless and have been for a decade. If granting Obama a preemptive peace prize didnt kill the prizes for you, what will

  • @pixelsilva Humberto Ecco is not controversial enough. Things may change. Keep praying brother...

  • Elizabeth and Elizabeth the Golden Age were also great movies as well as Queen Margot =)

  • Thumbs up si estan viendo esto por la clase de historia :D

  • @zenku41 Thumps up, anyway, pero lo estoy viendo por la clase de matemática ;P

  • This is one book I have had to read over and over to fully understand... but it's a pleasure each time. Grazie Professore!

  • Making this movie was an Act of God. Getting the money from diverse sources and assembling an international cast is a a miracle. Sean Connery was excellent in this movie. Many actors who are supporting cast in European movies are in here.

  • A very, very interesting film. Thumbs up.

  • sean is hot

  • I've a feeling J K Rowling is an afficiando of The Name of the Rose. The first two Harry Potter books make one think of Signor Eco's novel.

  • I once thought I would one day read the novel in Italian. Now I don't think I'll ever read it in any language.

Strange seeing such a young Christian Slater.

  • if you like the movie, read the book!

The movie is good, but the book is way better :)

  • @Thambark i like movies better than books because you can't spill coffee on them.

  • The man who described the middle age as no one, U.Eco

  • This movie is simply sublime. Anyone who cannot appreciate this master work of dark aesthetics combined with acute psychological subtleties...should stick to American Idol and Two and a Half Men. This film is left untouched by such sophomoric, dumbed down mass entertainment. This is the most astute upload I have seen in some time.

  • Umberto Eco is a Literary Rockstar!

  • 'The Name of the Rose' is merely a blip on an otherwise uninterrupted downward trajectory.

  • uncle fester was a monk, i knew it!!!

  • Yes thank you so much.My cousin worked at Blockbuster and couldn't get this. It was popular back in the mid 80's but something must have gone wrong with the distribution rights in the last 20 years because it is tough to find and HBO,Showtime,etc,-never show it. Thanks again....awesome.

  • This is the first time I put the 'name' omittance riddle together. It always just seemed like a broadcast or technical screw up till now. I guess that makes me a pretty poor Sherlock.

  • The movie is amazing. The book is crap.

  • Oh no. for you see 46, he was in disguise to kill the Queen posed by an Elf.

  • The book is very good too.

  • Thank you so much for uploading this excellent and thrilling film!

  • he's not a monk. in the film, he's 007 in disguise...... drax is trying to kill him, but he's 007, a.k.a. immortal, he will have to wait until he's filthy rich and changes his name

  • he's not a monk. in the film, he's 007 in disguise...... drax is trying to kill him, but he's 007, a.k.a. immortal, he will have to wait until he's filthy rich and changes his name

  • It's lovely that 007 and Drax were the best of friends in a prior engagement before the events of MOONRAKER.

  • This was an amazing movie.

Excellent acting, a great set/location. GREAT story! Beautiful, thick and flowing robes...

Makes ME want to run away to the mountains of Italy and become a Monk.

"You may burn brother Ameggio... but other priests will be found dead here! With blackened fingers, and blackened tongues!!!"

  • Do you know that the music was composed by James Horner who also composed the music for Titanic and Braveheart.

  • 6:32

  • the most underrated movie of the 80's

  • @tiiito1988

I totally agree - but there are many, many underrated movies from the 1980's. (The Trip to Bountiful is another good example.)

  • One of my favourites! Love this movie but it´s gone?? Can´t find it to buy anywhere. Anyone who knows where one can buy it? Love to have all my movies in original.

  • @blasabb You can download this via torrents.

I believe ISO Hunt has a working torrent. Not many seeds, so grab it now. That's how I got it, about two months ago.

It's a good copy. I play it on my laptop all the time. Well worth the DL.

Most "Blockbuster Video" stores should have 1 copy, too.

  • @DarthZimmeris Yeah i know, i´ve already done so. But i want the original dvd. Call me old fashioned but i want my dvds in original. Been searching for a fucking long time no.

  • @blasabb

If you have a multi-region player, JB Hifi in Australia have it in a 3 movie box for A$19.99. You can order it online. (And I don't work for them, just helping out!)

  • @Aussiemarco Yes i do have a multi region! Thank you so much. I will order it at soon as possible

  • @blasabb

I'm glad I could help. It'll be region 4 and PAL system. Check that your DVD player can play PAL!

  • This one is very old and very forgotten, too bad :c

  • Kissing is not allowed for monks, and if it is done it is to be done in the air.

  • would drive me nuts, if everybody could look in my room like this

  • what's it about?

  • A medieval Sherlock Holmes.

  • @jethrowjj it's about alchemy and self discovery.

  • sean connery is very eloquent in this movie!

    a great classic!!!

    *****

  • Did those monks just kiss. Ugh

  • @penster01

A kiss on the cheek is simply a sign of friendship and respect.

  • when was the year of the premier?

  • i love this movie... it's very interesting

  • I love that film (Chriatian Slater and Sean Connery are in it yeah :) It will be first time I see it in english...

  • hey you love the name ofthe rose right? can you tell me how they smile? need it for my coursework and I have no time watching it

  • hahahahahahahahahahahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

this is a good one. well, if you don't have time to watch this movie, how about you read the book then, ey?

  • Lmao nice one

  • The guy at 3:04 looks like Ben from the serie Lost

  • Can somebody tell me something about the building at 1:49? Was it also built up near Rome? Or does it exist in reality?

If it exists, please tell me the place so I can search it at Google Earth.

    Thanks!

  • The movie was filmed in the San Bernardino abbey in L'Aquila, Italy...

  • The casting is perfect also the accent with italian, russian, german influences and parts when they speak and pray in Latin.

  • Everyone is always saying ugliness is a curse. But after watching this film, I think it'd be funny to be unbelievably ugly. Just look at all those monks! They're great!

  • "The exterior and some of the interiors of the monastery seen in the film were constructed as a replica on a hilltop outside Rome, and ended up being the biggest exterior set built in Europe since Cleopatra. Many of the interiors were shot at Eberbach Abbey, Germany. Most props, including period illuminated manuscripts, were produced specifically for the film"

  • Hello...could some one tell me the exact location where this movie was filmed? Many times google earth has excellant photos, etc..., of these places. Many thanks. please email.

  • Most to the film was made in spitzbergen with parts filmed in studios in Albania

  • such a good movie

    i love it!

  • Umberto Eco. Semiotics professor in Italy.

Amazing writer. Convoluted, complex, intriguing and fun as hell.

Read Foucault's Pendulum for some of his finest work. This book is very good, but the Pendulum is so vast in scope it could never be made into a film.

  • One of Sean Cannery's strongest performances, as a medieval Sherlock Holmes, plus all the monks featured are very outlandish looking, and almost resemble living caricatures.

  • i do agree for the atmosphere and the monks lol...it s pretty gud!

  • truly a great but pretty unknown movie, this movie comes across as a movie the connery did believing that it would do well , but it did not. still a great movie

  • amazing film, Connery the best

  • My favorit film ever !

  • "The 100 Years War"{actually 107}pitting Catholics against Protestants& vice-versa all over Europe the Crusades&Inquisition must have been a breath of fresh air!How did we Yids get caught up in the middle and slaughtered enmasse?

  • the guy at 3:57 played in a james bond movie, i cant think of his character. just a general bad guy.

  • That's Michael Londsdale, who played "Sir Hugo Drax" in "Moonraker" (1979).

  • sry: lonsdale

  • What in the world is wrong with you people? Is this movie that full of bad energy! You guys suck!!!!!

  • Eleven saintly shrounded men, came to wash my sins away
