Now Jimi Hendrix is my favorite artist. I listen to country, rock, metal, a very small amount of rap. Junior Brown does a pretty good Foxy Lady. This is my first time hearing it and I dig it. I was working at a customers house yesterday and I had the privilege to listen to a Junior Brown cd. His music takes me back to being a kid at my dads house. I like it a lot!
@smoovegittar Thanks for interjecting the fact it is music, and not the 100 yard dash, high jump, or baseball stats which are totally bullshit anyway. Heck legalize steroids I enjoy a good freak show as much as the next guy, and after laughing at the dying dickless freaks we can go see Junior play, and realize that its all good when its good, great when its great and we leave when it sucks, but no # 1,2,3,4 etc. That shit is for magazines into the pop aspect of hero worship by idiots with money.
junior, a fast thinker way ahead of most players, you think you can catch him, but hes done gone, like blackmore fast thinkin,, billy gibbons has that great plexi tone, and holds kller notes, randy california was way underrated,,but ritchie blackmore ,, is way ahead of all these,,the best to ever play easily,,peace everybody,,junior is very gifted,,hes there with hendris,, hillbilly meets psychedelic meets bluegrass gone berserk,,wonderful tone junior has here, half hendrix,es distortion though
Well, as a guitarist for 30 years and a HUGE Hendrix fan, I have to say this is one of, if not THE BEST cover of this song I have EVER heard. Junior clearly cared deeply about the playing style, production, tones of Hendrix. Even the "errors" and "slop" that show up in Hendrix is here; anyone who's listened to Junior's own material knows what an amazingly fast and clean player he is. I think it's a fitting tribute to Jimi, and Junior is clearly one of his biggest fans as evidenced by this IMHO!
Saw Junior in NYC at a rare outdoor concert. I was in the first row. I'm a guitar player and I went there with a guitar player buddy. We were quite impressed and it was a fun concert. He has good sense of humor and he is a remarkable talent. Not sure if I would compare him to Hendrix though. Hendrix is probably in the top 3 guitarist ever lived. But I would maybe put Junior in the top 30 guitarist ever lived.
Just my humble opinion of 20+ years playing and 40+ years as a fan of the guitar. I think Hendrix and SRV and Santana would blow his doors off to put it bluntly
I like Johnny Winter but maybe there's a reason that he remains obscure.... like there is not much to his music. Your ears get racked listening to his raspy voice after a few songs. He is so niched in by his voice so its a tough thing to put him with those greats who's voices really nailed something extra. I give him a lot dibs for ass kicking guitar but you got to look at the whole package- the overall value of the song and performance is mediocre and so he remains ambiguous in popularity.
I think looking at your selections its easy to see you let either the fumes from shoveling too much cow shit or chewing tobacco corrupt your sensibilites.
Depends on guitar styles too. Chet played so smoothly that it was hard to tell what he did was difficult.. Reed could hang with anybody and Les just put them all to shame at age 93. Les Paul played with the best in the world and didn't have to take a back seat to any guitar player anywhere at anytime. Course, neither did Chet or Reed either.
Sorry to say but I was born the same year as Chubby Checker's the Twist was all the rage ,, so have heard plenty eh ! Damb, I like this version !!! I think Jimmy would too ! Thanks 4 Post, all ! :)
I love listening to Junior Brown play. He is absolutely top notch. As for the comment that this is an improvement from the original is quite a stretch. Besides Junior Brown is in my opinion playing this to have fun. I thank him for that because I had fun listening to him.
Don't get me wrong now pechalf, Jimi Hendrix is sacred to me. I guess what I was getting at is that Junior did justice to this song like no one else out there could. I listen to this version of Foxy Lady more than the Hendrix one. I feel this is Junior's form of thanking Jimi for his inspiration and I can relate.
Dad was a country D.J. Al Strickland, Bob Wills piano player lived across the fence from me as a kid. I'm fortunate to have been within earshot of some pretty good pickin.. Hell I watched E.T. play at a high school homecoming event so rural, he had more band members than the visiting schools halftime program. I wonder how many people remember Jimmy Rogers and realize the incredible voice and quitar work JB has done. Even authenticating the record. media
JB is such a class act an if ever seen him play you can tell he enjoys it too - imatation is the great compliment an he does a great job of it as well !!!!do not think Jimmy would mind a bit by this cover !!!!nor even think JB was thinking anything other than just playing to best of his ability !!!!! an thats always fine with me !!!!!
Ok Cool your comment that it is improved blew me away. I don't think it is an improved version. However, I accept you explanation and I applaud your loyalty to Junior Brown. Without a doubt a guitar players guitar player. Have a great day!!!
I've seen Junior live several times. And everytime he blows the fuckin' roof off the joint. If you ever have the opportunity to see him live its well worth the money.
Because he's not pop/bubble gum. Quite frankly, I would prefer someone like him to not be on radio or TV where he would be ruined. Performers like this are best kept for those who appreciate this kind of stuff and don't go for the commercial stamped out candy.
He's been on Letterman. I've heard him on both the listener supported radio stations I listen to, but I can't say I've heard him on a commercial station. I'm seeing him at a bar this week, but he's not young and prance-worthy enough for stadium gigs.
he is quite amazing, which is why i think he's not mainstream. i heard of him by seeing the "hiway patrol" vid on tv years ago. but he just does his thing, and he does the shit out of it! when you're mainstream people want/expect things from you. he doesn't give it to them, he just gives 'em junior. which is also while he'll be flying just under the radar til his wings fall off. thanks for the tunes junior!
