Being a military general, making decisions, and giving orders to your troops is military and Foreign Policy experience. The commander-in-chief position has a military general aspect to it. Being a PoW as McCain was, or shot a number of times in Vietnam, as Wes Clark was, are not foreign policy credentials. They are character statements that show how committed you are to the welfare of your country, but there is no logical link between being hurt in combat and foreign policy.

He has served his country proudly, and shown great leadership - certainly more the Sen. McCain. McCain's entire military service can be summed up in three letters: P.O.W. No one is denigrating that service, but realize that Clark's point is that McCain's service was more of a "survivor" then a "leader."

What Clark said is true. As for Clark himself, he is a real American hero. Shot 4 times he didn't relinquish his command and get a medical evacuation. What did he do? He launched a counter-attack and won. Remember Bosnia? Not one American casualty. I didn't approve of that mission but I have to give him credit for a job well done on that one. The executive is a military position in part, thus why historically many of presidents have military experience. I'll give you Obama's newness; that's his challenge. However, McCain has had plenty of his own flip flops, but why does that even matter? Being a military general, making decisions, and giving orders to your troops is military and Foreign Policy experience. The commander-in-chief position has a military general aspect to it. Being a PoW as McCain was, or shot a number of times in Vietnam, as Wes Clark was, are not foreign policy credentials. They are character statements that show how committed you are to the welfare of your country, but there is no logical link between being hurt in combat and foreign policy.

He has other things that he points to as a member of the Senate as foreign policy experience. Great. It doesn't seem like General Wesley Clark is comparing apples to apples here. If you're going to criticize McCain's service in the military, then you also need to look at Obama's contributions (or lack thereof) to the armed forces as well. Hands down, I think we know who's more experienced. hands down.

not quite andrew. first of all, barack obama isn't basing his strength as a leader on military service, john mccain is, therefore clark's point is a valid one. second, voters deserve to know the whole truth and mccain and his supporters should expect thorough vetting during this election year. thirdly, i think it's silly to vote for someone who's made war their campaign platform when his only experience in war is utter failure, but that's just me. therealmccainDOTcom

When Bob Schiefer (sp*) questioned him on Obama, he did not deny his lack of executive experience either, but the fact is McCain utilizes his military experience as if it is a substitute for executive experience. Clark's criticism is valid, and the personal attacks against him in retribution are pretty disgusting - but par for the course for Fox News.

McCain is such a war hero and deserves to be president you would have voted for him in 2000 and in '04 against Bush, why wasn't he more qualified than Bush after being shot out of a plane. If you were to read Audacity of Hope, and Dreams of My Father, you would learn a great deal about Barack Obama. This guy is a man's man. McCain like Bush is a silver spooner. Obama did it himself. This is crazy! All McCain did was crash 7 planes after graduating last in his class. One of those crashes was in Vietnam. After the Vietnamese found out he was the son of an Admiral, he got 5 star treatment. Then he went home, divorced his wife, married a rich bimbo and went into politics. That's it!
Clark is a real war hero, not only brave, but great at his job. Why are we attacking Wes Clark like he was not a hero, and idolize McCain like being shot down makes his a genius?

Oh it did? It got worse? So how come he did everything in his power to prevent documents relating to his time in Vietnam from becoming public? If his story is worth telling, and qualifies him to be President, why doesn't he want it told? Why does he try to hide the details? Why should we trust his word when he refuses to release evidence that would confirm or contradict his word?

He worked as a "staff officer",!!!! collecting data and helping in operations planning, and was awarded the Bronze Star for his work with the staff.

You forgot to mention that one month after he was rewarded the bronze star he was shot 4 times with an ak47 in the field of battle by a vietcong soldier. as he was laying on the ground in horrible agony he still managed to shout orders to his men setting up a successful counterattack. Yes, but you fail to mention that after Vietnam, Clark never left the Army. He commanded the Kosovo War during his term as the SUPREME ALLIED COMMANDER EUROPE of NATO.
Clark was the Valedictorian of his West Point class, a Rhodes Scholar, and a holder of multiple degrees in military science and Philosophy, Politics and Economics. He has received numerous military awards as well as several knighthoods and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
McCain is nothing compared to Clark.

Clark was assigned a position in the 1st Infantry Division and flew to Nam May 21, 1969. He took command of A Company, 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry of the 1st Infantry Division in January 1970. A month later he ambushed by VC and shot four times with an AK-47. The wounded Clark shouted orders to his men, who counterattacked and defeated the VC force. Clark had been shot in his shoulder, hand, hip, and leg, and was told he would never walk again.
The man is right out of a John Wayne movie.
