  • it's like I'm watching a quicktime movie from 2000.

  • Cor!

  • Listen to "Sam Gopal", Lemmys band before Hawkwind, great stuff, too!

  • Terrible quality on the picture-pity

  • @gruzzler - yeah. There was some upload limit back then, that made me compress the files, but maybe I went too far. Anyway, my uncompressed bit torrent on TPB is still there, and currently has 9 seeders, so those of you who can't watch BBC4 can always get it there. Standing on the runway waiting to take off....

  • What the hell is that old woman saying in the back ground at 1.52?

  • @dannyhood66 - I remember wondering that, when I first saw this doc on BBC4. Can't make it out.

  • Stacia was smokin hot

  • What year was this made?

  • Ground breaking band. Master of the Universe towards the end of Space Ritual rocks. Lemmy and Simon King were a shit-hot rhythm section.

  • Cheers for putting this up,Ole Brock is a grump.

  • 5:22 whats the title of this song???

  • @VirgoChild66 ... You Shouldn't Do That

  • Mirror of Illusion bro

  • Does anyone know the title of the song that starts around 2:57?

  • Got hooked on Hawkwind when I first heard sonic attack. Amazing musical talent. Just wish the lineup wouldn't keep changing! It's a case of who's hot in the session musician scene!!!

  • I was literally descending into Hell, really.

  • dave brock is a miserable coont, nik turner was hawkwind.

  • powis square/all saints are of notting hill will never be the same.. no julia roberts and hugh grant back then in the slums

  • Been a fan of Hawkwind since my buddy gave me my first hit of lsd and cranked In search of space through a huge set of speakers. Needless to say, brix were shat

  • loved m" to bits since 1977, when at the age of 14, i bought a scratched up copy of "the space ritual" in a second-hand shop. from the 1st spin on the player, i realised that "space is the place"! and i"ve been there ever since! check out our hawkwind covers on my channel if you like.

  • Thanks mate. Been looking for this for awhile. BB

  • This is one of my favorites. Seen Hawkwind live only once though.

  • Few Of MY favorites.... HEADS,Ship of Dreams,LOVE in Space,Levitation,The Camera wouldnt Lie,HIGH RISE,Motorhead,Realms, abducted, to Name a Few, Hurry on sundownnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

  • BEEN a Hawkwind Fan since I first Heard. 1976 BUTLER Pennsylvania' 'EXILE Records'. Butler PA. 1975,6,7,8... Went back to Philly,[Levittown,PA]. Hawkwind I spread the word Till this Day I turn Folks onto, Cause MOST people have been Manipulated by Commercial Crap. This Band WAS,IS the HEART of MOST Fortunate Commercial Successful Bands[Pink Floyd,N few others.

  • Band Ive supported n Turned Many people onto. me now 49, been Listening since 77. when I first Learned OF . Space Ritual, the Album Cover Got my Attention. Then putting them on the turn table . I KNEW I FOUND GOD !!! I from the Philly PA Area. all life . Mpls,MN 2002 n 4everr.

  • Grew up listening to HW with my old man.

38 now and stil listen to Space Ritual Alive very often.

    Timeless stuff

  • Ian "Lemmy" Kiliminster was actually a roadie for Jimi Hendrix for a brief spell. I met Lemmy a couple of times, and he was a jovial, affable chap.

  • I don't understand all this talk of Hawkwind v Pink Floyd.

Pink Floyd were group of art students who made trippy music but didn't take drugs

Hawkwind were a bunch of drug taking hippy squatters who made music.

Give me Hawkwind or the Pink Fairies any day, it would make my squat complete.

    Heh!

  • Do Brock and Turner not get on?

  • 7:43

  • Loony spacemen.

dave brock looks like iggy pop now.

  • I've just found my new favorite band.

  • LEMMY!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

  • "We weren't cute like the Pink Floyd man, we were dark, we'd lock the doors at our gigs to keep the people in." Lemmy living legend.

  • as fucking rad as this is, i really wish dave brock was in it, as well as more mention of barney bubbles. i mean c'mon the dude gave them a serious visual identity

  • @gglaw42 how was Pink Floyd cute? they have much darker songs than Hawkwind. dont look at their most popular songs and judge if they are dark or not. check out "Careful with that Axe, Eugene" or "Cirrus Minor" or almost all the songs from The Wall and tell me if Hawkwind can get any darker than that

  • @freddiebarry93 They're probably commenting on physical looks. Girls swarmed around Floyd because of Sid Barrett and David Gilmour himself was a male model at one point

  • @gglaw42 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! w/Nik turner /

  • @gglaw42

No need to lock the doors, Lem, no one leaves an Hawks gig 'til it's finished. Second best band ever. The good ship Hawkwind was at its best when it had one Captain Robert Calvert Esq. at its helm. The man was a genius.

  • Man I cant even imagine. We used to crank this stuff and cactus also while criusing around.

  • Hawkwind are not only my second favorite group of all time, they are an ideaological counter culture inspiration to me.

  • They were the founding fathers of the Mystical Order of 'Psychadelic Warlords'

  • Amazing!!!

  • Hawkwind is simply: AWESOME!!!

  • This is unintentionally one of the funniest documentaries I have ever watched.

  • "We used to lock the doors so people couldn't get out!" Lemmy is the best.

  • Very good band!!

  • im so stoned

  • Awesome - I never knew this existed. They were so far out in left field - the only decent thing to listen to in the 70s besides punk

  • And Abba. Ha ha!

  • I remember them visiting the Watchfield Free Festival in the UK and in our Geodiesic dome we built and then lived in. We were all tripping nicely.....watching Planet Gong. Nice one Nic..........

  • Thanks for sharing this. Excellent stuff!

  • I saw them about '72, used to have their albums. To this day Silver Machine is up there with the best.

  • Yes... SM is derided a bit by album fans (HW were an album band, after all) but the original is a damn fine song. I don't like the 1979-onwards arrangement, though.

  • @wibblywobbly1 WOW..... Thats Debatable.... Is that Sorta like Aerosmiths /DREAM ON being there Best ? n NAZARETH Love Hurts ? well. the Sound Ballad,Rock,NON Commercial ,Commercial. .................. Very HARD to do . BUT , But if , IF I had to CHOOSE > ***Time we left this world today ***OR [SHIP of Dream's , Space Bandit's[ Was A Favorite But ALL Are Great.... ALL 300 Songs.

  • Great posting.....When I first heard them play (I'm the same era) I thought for months they were American! Stacia also went on to have a son who became quite famous didn't she?....anyone know who he is?

  • Elric the albino hero, maybe...

  • who? HAWKS 4 EVER!!

  • Ah yes! One of the first truly metal bands in my opinion.

  • HellFire Red presents: Space Ritual: A Tribute to Hawkwind with Tommy Grenas, Pete Stahl, Mario Lalli, Brant Bjork, Ruben Romano, Ed Mundell and many more at the Knitting Factory (Los Angeles) on April 17th!!

  • thanks a lot for posting this. A bloke who did plastering in my mum's kitchen saw this lot at stonehenge. Oh, it makes me all nostalgic, and I wasn't even thought of...

    Thank you!!!!

  • Moorcock is an amazing author, 'this way and that'. Hawkwind are champion!

  • I saw Hawkwind for the first time in Chicago in 1994. Blew me away

  • I love Terry Ollis, he's a legend.

  • High Tide (band whose gear Hawkwind used for their first gig) is awesome, definately worth checkin out if you like Hawkwind.

  • people who say that lemmy & motorhead are nazis don't understand notthing!!!

  • Its odd seeing the area when i was a kiddie.

  • Hawkwind rules!

  • Thank you so much for posting these vids. I missed this on tv (well I got home to see the last ten mins and was raging to have missed it) so will catch up now. Cheers mate (enjoy the gigs if you're going).

  • Ian Fraser Kilminster, (Lemmy) joined Hawkwind in late 1971, after lobbying from his mate Dik-Mik, and was kicked out in spring 1975 after a legendary drugs bust on the Canadian border. His first Hawkwind album was Doremi Fasol Latido, his last Warrior on the Edge of Time, which was heading far away from Lemmy's own musical direction...

    See his Wikipedia entry.

Nik Turner fans: Friday 26th September, Space Ritual are at the 100 Club, London

  • what years was that Lemmy was in hawkwind????????

  • seen hawkwind loads of times , always of my head, saw them at stonehenge 84 ,last festival cause thatcher ban it after that. shared can of special brew with nick turner under table in london gig , right dive.great band , great times, great trips.

  • Loving it!!

  • Well their attitudes towards one another suck, that's it. Both are great men, and Nik is bitter that Dave got control of the band, and Dave is bitter that Nik tried to take his position as the band's backbone. Nik will always represent the bands ideals, but there would have been no music without Dave.

P.S. Mike Moorcock regrets getting involved in the Nik-Dave dispute, as he thinks he reacted too quickly.

  • The drummer looks like Regan from The Exorcist lol.

  • Excellent!

  • listen to it ...he was invited but declined ...he was great but not now,,,attitude towards Nik sucks big time ...oh and yeah I saw them at Windsor so I can vouch for how good they were ..once! Was in to them fer years.

  • Oh Dave Brock you are such a cock,

If Nik Turner appears I'm going to spit my dummy out.

  • shame your right....

  • TECHNICIÄNS ÖF SPÅCE SHIP EÅRTH THIS IS YÖÜR CÄPTÅIN SPEÄKING YÖÜR ØÅPTÅIN IS DEA?D

I'm ashamed that I'm only 24 years old and just started listening to Hawkwind a few months ago.

    My Generation sucks.

  • had HAWKWIND live at stonehenge, the last free henge, but some twat stole it from my house, how i miss it so

  • Thanx for yr comments, folks.

Note that if you're starting to watch this from scratch, part 7 is out of sequence with the rest: I posted it much later on, due to what's commonly known as a f* up

  • thanks for posting-watched on bbc4 but now watched on you tube several times, just sit back smoke + enjoy, again many taaaaaaaaaas

  • drove from dublin-holyhd to lowestoft to see rhem at the eastern haze festival a few yrs ago

  • Lords of Noise! Memories include Calvert stalking about the stage at Bletchley Leisure Centre in the late 70s... {!!!!} or Lemmy machine-gunning the audience with his bass at Oxford NT. Nothing quite matches the 'wind on full song.

  • As a woefully distanced MidWestern American I'd never seen this wonderful video. Hawklord, you have done me a great service by posting this! Thanks so much! I still have(& play)all my Hawkwind collection on vinyl. I wore out my first copy of SpaceRitual & finally got my third copy on CD. Viva Hawkwind!

  • Thanks. I saw my Dad on this show last summer and its taken me this long to track down a clip to show my family.

He's busking with Dave Brock between 2:20 and 2:36 if you care ;)

So happy HawklordPXR5 put the clip on utube, you're a true Gent. I owe you.

  • Wow! That's kinda cool. What is your dad's name, out of interest?

  • He was known as Bob Southern, or Ramblin' Bob. He passed away several years ago, so it was really nice to see him on tv.

Unfortunately the Beeb are unable to help me track down the original footage the clip came from.

He fell out with Brock over busked money and never spoke to him again. I notice Brock has had a similar effect on a number of people since :)

  • t1np0t, I've messaged you some info.I don't know if it's useful or not.

  • I love Doug Smith's comment in the beginning about Stacia and her cleavage. lol

  • Elric the metatemporal demon , slouching upon a beige chair, observing the fleeting lights of 30s London below him, as his elfin ears attuned to the sighing wind, playing in the flying ships sail wires

  • Hawkwind is like the punk band of the psychedelic movement, its almost as if Pink Floyd were a punk band they'd be Hawkwind.

  • I played a few songs last night with Nik Turner :D

And I go to college with his son

  • Awesome.... Hawkwind rock seriously... respect.

  • Thanx 4 this HawklordPXR5!Missed it on TV! Try New Model Army!!

  • birds with big tits that could fucking kill you

  • SpAcE rOCK RULES

saw them again last year :D

    RIP John Peel :-)

  • born to gooooooooooooooooooooooo

  • HAWKWIND ARE GOD

  • About time they got some air time. Shame that Dave felt he couldn't take part. Take care all of you and thanks!

  • I can't tell you how glad I am to find this. I was a very extreme Hawkwind fanatic when I was in college. When I walked into bars, people would yell, "Hawkwind!" just because they knew how into their music I was. I still think they're incredible.

  • once upon a time i had a brain,a very nice brain ,almost human you could say+ then it happened, i put the vinyl on took what looked like the flint from a lighter+ boom ,a brave new world-thank you hawkwind

  • Thanks for posting....missed it....was forced to watch american idol by heavier numbers

  • I liked this documentary a lot, however....I don't quite get trying to link techno and rave to Hawkwind. Bleh, I hate that shit. Gimme rock n' roll

  • Fantastic! Fanx

  • "Doesn't change much around here does it?"

    "Wasn't he in Hawkwind?"

"Ohhh he was the singer right?"

    Haha

  • can you still get quirk, strangness and charm.Ilove reefer madness .istill hahe the album, but it was played so much it wore out.

  • thanx for uploading the hawkwind documentury ive seen this the other week loved it hawkwind are brillient cheers again.

  • great to watch,i'm a huge hawkfan,i was away when this was televised,so thanks for letting me catch up..
