You guys are forgetting that Brands was still a young college wrestler here, while Smith was already an Olympian and international competitor. At this time, yeah Smith outclassed him with his experience. This match may have been different if it happened in 1996 when Brands caught up to Smith's level of experience. Either way, both are two of the best of all time. I don't understand why people have to say one is the best and the other sucks.

Dude, you say the same thing every time you comment. John Smith was in no way, scared of Fried. John Fisher gave him a tough time at the trials that year, but Fried was never on Smith's level. Brands sored a few takedowns, but was still beaten by ten points. Smith was 100-5 in his international freestyle career, and 80-0 against American competition. That's a 180-5 career mark. Smith and Brands college records are almost identical, but Smith set himself apart in freestyle.

freestyle is all takedowns, if you add in the different rules between collegiate and freestyle, it's a totally different situation. I'd like to have seen brands and smith wrestle with collegiate rules, I think brands would have taken smith.

F-you to anyone bashing Tom Brands. He had 1 pt scored on him at one of toughest weights ever at olympics. 5 world champions at the weight in 1996. And Smith kept Al Fried out of 1992 trials because his own athlete was his biggest threat. Promised fried an exemption (like Colat got in 1996) to get in trials bracket. Tom is too legit for tactics like that. All you know it alls should look into that one.

John Smith did lose in his prime, to antonio scalachi, from Italy, which is no powerhouse. By contrast, Tom Brands had 5 former world champions in his weight in 1996. No shit John Smith is a warrior; just not the same coach as tom Brands. Hell, Smith had to keep Al Fried out of the 1992 trials to ensure him not being upset by one of his own athletes. Just watch their 1988 us open match. Al was 16, and took smith down 3-5 times. Tom brands would never do that. REAL TALK!

Smith did not lose to an Italian, he lost to a Cuban(Reinoso). If you watch Smith vs. the German /Russian/Iranian( '92 Olympics) you will see he was a warrior, even though he was sick prior to the games, hindering training etc.Smith won 6 straight World level titles; plenty dominant during his reign. Smith was able to come back and win the '92 Gold was b/c Reinoso got beat by the Russian( who Smith tf'd). Brands/McIlravy lost to wrestlers ( semis) who had not lost( Igali/Dabir).

Tom Brands is only a 3 time NCAA champ ( 1 more than smith), and Olympic champion (Tom only gave up 1 point en route to toughestgold medal ever; with 5 world champions in it), and has won 2 coach of the years and 3 NCAA titles as coach in just the beginning of his tenure at Iowa. Sorry but John Smith lost to an Italian during one of his olympic gold medals (not very dominant). If the had the same rules in 2000; both Lincoln and Terry Brands may have been Olympic champions

Smith has won 5 NCAA titles in 18 seasons at Oklahoma State. Brands has 6 years of head coaching experience. Brands has won 3 NCAA titles in 6 years as a coach.

At the time of this match, Brands had just completed his senior season in college wrestling. He certainly had not been training or competing in freestyle with much consistency. Not to take anything from Smith, but these two great Olympic Champions never saw each other when both were in their prime.

Wow, Smith was able to shoot on Tommy all day long. This is the 2nd worse I've seen Tom get beat. Randy Lewis pinned Tom pretty quickly when Tom was younger - that's the worst I've ever seen Tom get beat.
