  • BTW MARVA IS STILL PUTTIN' DOWNB SOUL LIVE ONSTAGE!

Let's get off the computer for an hour or two & check back into real life.See here while you can folks

  • anyone who thinks this is better than Etta is freakin' nuts; and I'm impartial.

  • Comment removed

  • She was saving lives here. Black, white, cop, civilian. I was attending UC Berkeley at that point and the civil rights groups on campus and in Oakland & SF had scoffed at King's Gandhi-based strategy but were justifiably outraged and large numbers of African-Americans and other Struggle supporters felt the need to deliver a swift and severe message. Police and National Guard units were determined to keep the white areas, at least, from destruction. Ms. Whitney knew what the score

  • this is perfect

  • She sounds much better singing like this and not forcing her voice like JB made her do too often.

  • Much better than Etta James

  • annoying microphone...

  • This woman is fantastic..a thrilling singer. Some great sides with James Brown band available on record....too bad they did not include this on the James Brown dvd....now will probably never be released. glad I purchased the bootleg copy as well as the official release.

  • she had another songs in that concert , can u upload them ?

  • beautiful woman!

  • Exceptionnelle. I love you Marva.

  • elle était jeudi soir à Marseille, à la friche avec les mêmes d'Osaka; comme tu dis, de la bombe derrière, la grande classe au micro, une claque énorme , la pêche et tout le reste !! une soirée inoubliable ...

  • Awesome!

  • hmmm problemas con la micro...?!?!?!

  • oh! cool!! i love ♪

nice sound mov ! Thank you!

    ありがとう!From Japan

  • marva for me was always queen of funk & soul... amazing voice ...

  • She's so good looking.

  • god only knows what the previous comments have to do with this video.

marva is amazing with the stage presence and voice to prove it!

  • Because this song is about a woman being abused by her man, and JB used to hit Marva Whitney when she was his woman. Ironic.

  • some hate on Marva but she had a great voice then.James didn't give her the best material. I love her duet with James on sunny. There's some others songs she's doing here on youtube that's wonderful. it's all in the material sometimes. James had his ladies singing like him sometime. with a funky style.

  • It's amazing how she has to constantly adjust that slipping microphone, but yet keeps right on a singing without missing a note. WOW.

  • WOW!!!!

  • at this time, "Tell Mama" was a hit(original) by Etta James BUT Marva is fabulous. Marva is a wonderful person and still lives In Kansas City. Around the time of this show, her record was "Unwind Yourself" which is a baadass jam.

  • I like her version too, but who songs is it anyway, Marva, Janis Joplin or my favorite "Etta James"?

  • It's originally written and recorded as "Tell Daddy" by Clarence Carter. Etta James followed Carter with her version.

  • James Brown would never have been himself without the tramatic childhood, aunt's whorehouse, abandonment by his mother, reform school, adoption by Mr. Byrd's family and of course his raw talent and genious sense for music. Absolutely irriplacaeble, period.

  • yeah, but Elvis Presly is not overrated?

  • Ha. This sud dude is full of it.

  • Yes My man had a terrible childhood. his aunt use to tell him to go hide in the closet you too ugly we got company coming over. How can a caring adult tell a child something like that.

  • She looks pregnant. She had an affair with James Brown. She left his entourage due to abuse, including beatings and money.

  • J.B. definately had a dark side. Then again, he'd had a hard life. His Mom left home when he was a child, he was thrown out of school, when he was a child, because his clothes were old/ripped/dirty, and he later went to prison.

  • That's so sad his aunt had money tor run a whore house but not enough to buy her nephew clothes........ I see now why he had such a huge EGO.

  • It doesn't really take money to run a whorehouse, it takes whores.

  • True. but the more Whores you have the more money you generate...... take care of your responsibllity. That's my point. But what do you expect from a woman like her.

  • LOL .... I concur

  • He allegedly threw Tammi Terrell down a flight of stairs and kicked her in the head when he dated her. He was abusive to all of his wives apparently. He certainly was to adrienne. A lot of the great music talents have those temper issues. I think its a waxing waning type personality thing like Ike turner. Great musician horrible husband/boyfriend.

  • who did that?

  • Who did that to Tammi ? JB did allegedly. Then David Ruffin Allegedly hit her in the head with a hammer when they dated. Neither of the incidents led to her brain tumor, but it's unfortunate that any man would choose to be so cruel to a woman. If you can't get along then get apart. Some of my brothers for some reason feel like a woman is supposed to mind them. You can't raise an adult. If you don't like them as they are then either grow with them or move on.

  • She suppose to be writing a tell all book.

  • oh... damn... thats f**ked up... but yeh, I hate that. I've always felt like, why would somebody want to be with someone that would hurt you... smh

  • i love it i love it i love it

  • janis joplin rocks this song

  • In her dreams.

  • No way. Can't compare the two, makes no sense at all. Marva Whitney is a Rolls Royce, Janis Joplin a PT Cruiser...

I love MW, the most beautiful powerful soulsister of them all.

  • I'd say Cadillac and Chevy, respectively.

  • all about it!!

  • TELL MAMA

  • This is the James Brown Revue concert from Boston that was put on TV to keep people off the streets after Dr. King was killed.Marva is a great singer & could work the stage.

  • @soulfultony thanks for the info, can you expand on that as I am genuinely interested, was this scheduled ahead of time knowing MLK was going to be killed, or pushed on as an attempt to keep people in?

  • very good version she has a good voice.

  • gumdroplou was here!!!

  • microphone w

  • where did you find this awesome video! Marva Whitney is one of my alltime favorite soul sisters

  • She was soo fine..Good song!

  • This is a rare treat! She works this song!!
