Oxygen depravation seems to have claimed 35 people. Anyway, I'm probably the 2nd, 3rd or so on to ask this-- Any ideas what the music is that plays from 6:31 to 7:29?
Late last year some friends convinced me to bring my dirt bike out to Colorado. I stepped off the plane fresh from 600ft Atlanta and we went to Taylor Park, starting at 10K ft and riding up to 12K ft on trails that were practically trials courses with bikes prepped for near sea level. In between five minute hyperventilating spells, it was fun seeing what it took to get the bikes to carry you up the mountains.
Yes, acute mountain sickness. O2 is one option, but it promotes a dangerous cahnce for free-radical injury.
I'd recommend a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor, such as Acetazolamide, which can combat the main problem of acute mountain sickness (alkalosis). Just give them boys extra water to drink ;-)
Stages of acute mountain sickness should have had oxygen masks which would have help also a need for acclimatization need to spend weeks to acclimatize
They obviously had emergency gear on hand just off camera. The camera crew obviously had to be there in their own vehicles, and probably with supplemental oxygen bottles in order to get into position and establish all those long shots. The situation wasn't as dangerous as it's being made out to be.
@dunbar9finger That's very true. But they did do a good job of making the situation look very realistic. Of course they did lack oxygen, but as you said, it definitely was not as dangerous as it was made out to be.
@dunbar9finger At no point in the film do they even imply that what they're doing is dangerous. I'll never understand why pedants insist on reading so much into an entertainment show. Obviously they aren't going to die, obviously it isn't dangerous, but the effects of oxygen deprivation are real.
@blackvapour Also, my response was in response to *other commenters on youtube* who said this was dangerous, who clearly hadn't thought about the fact that there was obviously a crew with supplies off camera.
Nobody built the road, it's a beaten track not a road.Hammond could have made it alone, but alone there is no point. And where are the oxgen tubes, i think this route wasnt planned
@sauronics -- Using the principle of adding moisture which helps make the incoming air more dense? Leaning the fuel to reduce over-rich fuel-air mix and retarding spark to allow piston to reach TDC before initiating detanation would also help. A water-methanol injection system would help also -- as of course would having a turbo. Wrapping open-cell foam-rubber, burlap or wool-blanket material loosely around air-filter element & wetting w/ water would accomplish same purpose as cut-onion.
That's the Andes Mountians for ya. It's actually raw Coca Leaves the help alleviate High Altitude Sickness. Been used since the time of the Inca Empire and before the Conquistadors and Europeans starting exploiting it and changing it's concentration to very toxic levels (why it's so commonly seen as such a vile plant.) :D.
yea i too am quite baffled gah how the fucking hell did the fricken natives manage to build a road over that volcanic monster? i mean this is insane .
@FLAME4564 I've been to Guallatiri Volcano twice... those roads go all the way to the Bolivian border, so the Chilean Army and the Police use them for surveillance and military pursposes.., I don't think they made them... they probably kept on driving on the same paths with Unimog and pickup trucks until they eventually turned them into "roads"...
I've heard that on the very top of the volcano - 6045m there used to be a sulfur mine where people worked every day (who do you think had pushed the road that they were using) so these three clowns might look like the ultimate extreme survivor heroes only to some Yorkshire housewife that doesn't have a clue about mountains
@TheKingofnoob viagra lowers the blood pressure allowing it 2 b pumped around the body easier. it is used 2 treat the symtoms of altitude symtoms but asprin works mor effectively they probably used viagra 4 the comedy value of having a hard on
this is a re posting on this video, which i rarely do. but i think if they would have converted their vehicles to run on E85 and brought a lot of extra fuel the extra HP at high altitude might have made a world of difference. I think ethanol performs better at altitude because it carries extra oxygen in it. I am looking at Aviation Grade Ethanol AGE85 which is similar to E85 except stuff added for a less chance of vapor lock. as far as i no it works better at altitude. more testing is needed.
@switchgrassfuel I think a turbocharger would have been a better option. they were originally designed for high altitude piston fighter planes, less O2 content, force feed the engine more air to correct the problem.
@PaladinXM8 i think E85 and a turbocharger would be a perfect combination. turbo is an excellent idea. it would cost more, but it would provide the extra power to get the job done. I don't no why i didn't think of that. I would like them to redo the challenge with one of the vehicles having a turbo and on E85 just to see the difference. I think all of the vehicles should be new. thanks for your comment. your idea might be even better than mine.
@moellerersej I'm not saying it would be a bad choice, not at all, but would it be more reliable then a landcruiser? Sure hammonds wasn't the most reliable but it may have been a dud. Did toyota invest more in parts in the hilux? they may very well have done.
@moellerersej the only good reason i bought hilux is reliabilty and the rest is boring, design is boring, engine is boring,off-road is boring with hilux. All Toyota cars are boring and funless to drive, they're just not die sadly
@paintballingfanatic They had cars however and a medical team and backup in the ass like I said. But if it's so damn important to you that everything these two millionaire journalists and ex-local radio DJ do is real, then lap it up.
Sure!, if we go there hardly would be able to have a small run, and the cars are just fighting and they behave like if they were de-syncronized, the gas is not getting fully burned because of the lack of Oxygen to aid the full combustion process; as the body works harder to get enough Oxygen from the air, the cars will be lacking of strength due to the same reazon...
Is it because of the altitude? I don't get it. My city is at 4600 meters which is about 15000 feets and the air feels ok. I think it's more to do with the terrain?
