  • A big LMFAO to the shit below me.

  • Why doesn't this happen when I stick a banana in water??

  • @RedGreyV <= Someone slap this kid.

  • @VoreTechz1985 <= Someone stick their dick up this kid.

  • @RedGreyV <= Someone get this kid a blow up doll. His parents wouldn't lend him their credit card and now his sexual depravity is raging.

  • @VoreTechz1985 What an immature little pecker you are, go get laid and shut the fuck up.

  • @RedGreyV Thumbs up, Vortech's a douche.

  • @ArmyManRogerQ Ouch, you hurt my E-feelings. Bounce on his knob some more. I'm sure your rectum's irritation is still bearable.

  • @VoreTechz1985 Jesus, youtube attracts a lot of morons like you who like to pick fights, get a job or something and grow up.

  • @ArmyManRogerQ So i am the immature one because i am the one not asking why bananas don't explode in water. What kind of retarded question is that? Why don't you nerd rage on the moron asking stupid questions, then telling people to go have gay sex? You dick rider. If you just noticed the type of crowd Youtube attracts then you are just as beyond all hope as RedGreyV.

  • @VoreTechz1985 You started a fight with someone who asked a legit question, who are you to judge what is a good or bad question? Grow the fuck up. Notice his question has 4 thumbs up and yours has... hmm... 0. You are asking people to have gay sex "dick rider" are you 12? Please give me your moms phone number so I can tell her that her little boy needs a time out. Youtube attracts trolls like you, you shit on everybodies videos, I saw that on your page, what a dumbfuck.

  • @ArmyManRogerQ So you believe that starting a fight with me when this had nothing to do with you makes you any better then me? A legit question? Wow you belong in the same classification as that fucking moron if you truely think that is a legit question. Aside from that, I like to troll, it brings me great joy. The really sad part is you took the time to investigate me. You psycho. Why don't you give me your mom's number so i can call her and tell her that her son is a fucking online stalker.

  • @VoreTechz1985 Wow, you live a truly sad, empty life, my friend, the fact you admit to being a troll goes to show JUST how legit your argument has been, bet you live in your mama's basement. You are more of a moron than any of us here, anybody who sees your comments will know this. I'm finished with you.

  • @ArmyManRogerQ My heart is breaking. You are trolling a troll. Way to break out the "You live in your moms basement" joke. Haven't heard that 10000000 times before. If you are gonna flame people at least try to be a little original. I know with an I.Q. of your level it is hard to process cognative thoughts. Anyone who sees your comment will know you got owned. Thanks for coming out.

  • Basically all of evansp12's videos are telling us this: dont put out lab fires with water

  • this is K+H2O

  • Pop! And It's gone!

  • QUESTION: Why doesnt the army just throw a massive clump of this into harbours or near boats?

  • @lilzeus7 cuz making a large "stone" of Potassium or Sodium isnt that simple, also, since they react with violently with water (that applies to air, since have water particles) they have to be stored in kerosene or something similar. thats 1 problem.. another would be the ambiental impact: the reaction form a KOH (or NaOH from Sodium) and H2, wich explodes from reaction energy.

  • @brunopfrainer - Ah kk. Thanks.

  • Wait, at the end of the video? Did it jump out of the water? o_o

  • on new years day i wanne throw 1 pound into teh ocean

  • nice colour :D

  • i know what i want this christmas

  • keep your bananas out of the water!

  • So the explosion in the end is from burning hydrogen, liquid potasium in contact with water, or solid but hot postasium touching water?

And what would happen if you took piece of potasium and tied it with a steel band (rubberbands would melt and not hold) to a block of steel to weigh it down and trow it into a deeper bowl of water so at no point was the metal in contact with air (no oxygen to burn)? Would it still explode from reacting with water? Or would it just act as an H gas generator?

  • The potassium would melt, flow out of the steel band, and float on the surface, likely to explode.

If potassium is still under water, it is still liable to explode, especially if the pieces are large (cesium, of course, explodes violently under water, but small amounts of sodium and lithium act as steady H gas generator).

  • Why did it take so long to explode? The metal burned, so why didn't it keep burning till it burned out? If the metal was to explode, why didn't it to so immediately? What's going on here?

  • To the best of my knowledge, I think it's because the temperature of the metal has to reach a critical temperature before it reacts explosively with water. Otherwise, it reacts more slowly, skating across the surface. During the latter phase, it is the hydrogen liberated that burns but is colored by presence of potassium vapor.

Anyone who has better answers, please comment.

  • @evansp12

So does the metal really burn, or just the hydrogen gas? And when the explosion happens is it from the metal blowing up, or the hydrogen gas itself exploding? I normally think, a solid has to be in powder form to explode and a liquid has to be in an airosol mist to explode (or have evaporated into a gas). Usually only gases can explode in their natural form.

  • It's mainly hydrogen that is burning (the part that is the flame) but potassium vapor produces the pink color, which also burns with hydrogen. The metal sphere, which is in liquid form, is not burning in a normal sense until it explodes. Yes, it is the metal that produces an explosion. Liquids need not always be in the vapor form to to cause an explosion.

    I hope this helps.

  • @evansp12

Also when the explosion happens, it sends chips of metal flying (seen this on another video in a better lit room). But if the gas blew up, the explosion is in the open air and wouldn't have enough force to shatter the piece of metal. Yet I don't see how a solid piece of metal would explode either, especially since the water surrounds the metal and boils, forcing the temperature to not exceed 100degC (actively boiling water can't get hotter) and so the metal can't get hotter.

  • The potassium is in liquid form when it reacts with water, and the metal temperature is often much higher than the boiling point of water. This is due to large amount of heat evolved, so much that water does not cool the metal down to below 100 C.

Water surface boils just below the molten potassium sphere, giving steam that reacts with the metal giving hydrogen. The steam and hydrogen gives the molten potassium a kind of 'hovercraft' effect, insulating it from the coolness of water.

  • @evansp12

Thanks for the info. I have some more questions though.

How does the metal get into liquid form? The chemical reaction with the water is exothermic that it melts the potassium? Or does the first reaction set fire to the potassium and then the burning potassium melts itself? What ignites the hydrogen? The heat of the burning potassium? Or is it spontaneous ignition in the air? Why does it take so long to ignite hydrogen? Why not burn as it is generated? And why explode when not containd

  • The metal melts due to heat given out by the reaction with water, which is exothermic. The hot molten metal ignites the hydrogen. The length of time the hydrogen ignites depends on the temperature of the molten metal. When the temperature of the molten metal is sufficiently high, the molten metal starts to react explosively with water.

  • LOL my principal is a DR and he has Rubidium and Cesium for our school XD

  • Hehe ^^ We did this in science today (;

  • 2. send this to 2 other videos.

    3. hold your breath for 10 seconds.

    4. press refresh twice.

    3. LOOK AT YOUR HANDS

  • One angry molecule...

  • how about you put the same amount of rubidium in there :D BOOM!!! yeah that's why my mom wanted to kill me... :D nice vid anyway :)

  • why not Francium :o lmao if he really did that franciums rare thow but would blow up evrythin there if he did it using only 1 gram

  • What...? vagina" I like it...

  • No, this is magneesium..

  • Haha, no it's not

  • its potassium..

  • Ok...ok I just joking...

But very hard in my coutry to find potassium nitrat....

I, already knows how to make firecracker...

  • I know it's potassium...

It was the comment to MrTonyshit80

    He said it's magnesium

  • no it is potassium... trust me...

  • lmfao magnesium burns with a white flame....thats potassium

  • THIS IS POTASSIUM METAL. NOT AN IONIC COMPOUND OF POTASSIUM! That is like like saying putting salt (Sodium chloride) in water would release hydrogen gas burn and possible explode as sodium metal would. Hmm? No. It would not. No you get salty water.

  • Will this work if it is potassium nitrate?

  • No.

  • jobeme: Did you know you're an idiot? Or did you forget that POTASSIUM IS WAY MORE REACTIVE THAN SODIUM!?

  • That explains my heartburn after eating a banana!

  • lol

  • so let me get this right its just potassium and water? how much do i need?

  • Just a small lump of potassium about half the size of a marble and a bit of water about 5 cm deep.

  • ah potassum i did a reprt on that stuff u can use any amount but be care full when its in the water or u wi9ll get burned

  • "did u know if u slam a phone book onto your head it can knock you out/ kill you? wow science is FUCKING AWESOME "

wow, your really smart are you like a science teacher or somthing (sarcastic)

  • isnt that sodium...i didn't think potassium reacts with water. the sparks that this "potassium" looked alot like sodium thats all......by the way does anyone know how to get potasium nitrate in australia(america is very diff to australia).

  • all the alkli metals react with water and pottasium is an alkli metal

  • dude, howd you do that. Is that potasiem nitrate or jest potasiem...

  • just potasium

  • potassium is fckn awsome!! =D there's so many reaction that u can get with this stuff ^-^

  • me and my friend were told to deliver some potassium to another classroom- I cut a piece off with my keys and put it inside a pen lid lol. the bigger the piece the bigger the reaction- ours did just what yours did, but I bet one about the size of a £2 coin could explode!

  • ooh sickk!

  • Where did you get Potassium metal?Or are you in school?

  • I've got this sample from Prestons of Sheffield (in UK), but as far as I know the company no longer exists.
