@MrDyson01 - You probably got stung by a Japanese Hornet. They look almost identical to the Cicada Killer Wasp. Hope you are ok. Hornet stings can be extremely painful and dangerous!
@padude64 Oh I see where you got this....a comment that was made over a year ago. LOL. So I am a "hater" because I don't like Obama....Next thing, you will say I am a "racist" even though you don't even know me. Bit judgmental there. padude64. Thanks for the laugh.
Don't confuse them with Bald-Faced Hornets (a large yellowjacket that is not yellow) Same applies to the European Hornet A large social true Hornet. These do sting and can be a hazard to others. They will aggressively defend thier nests if provoked. They are still beneficial though.
Interesting video well done. Cicada killers are a bit alarming because of their size but are almost harmless unless you mishandle a female wasp. The males do not sting. Completely non aggressive with a singular task; To bring cicadas to feed their progeny. European Hornets are a different matter ( They STING) Along with the yellow jacket wasps. All are beneficial and should be tolerated as much as possible without introducing a sting hazard to others.
A couple of years ago I witnessed one of those wasps catch a cicada in mid-air. They fell next to the fence and about 5 minutes later the wasp flew off with its prize. Pretty amazing.
Probably wouldn't kill them lol, They take care of pest infections of bugs that harm your plants. I garden next to a female's nest with a male one buzzing around me and they ignore to the point my mom could almost pick one up.
But there's one called a European Hornet that poeple unfortunately mistake these wasp. These Hornets are very much dangerous with a crazy painful stinger.
I live in harmony with the cicada killer wasp. Nest under my deck. They leave us alone and conduct their business. Only 5 or 6 per nest. A peaceful bee.
Gah! that was crazy. We have a lot of cicadas where I live but I've never seen a wasp that huge. I think I would be very disconcerted to see a wasp that big. Even if I knew it was harmless lol! Just something about large bugs... When you think about it, we shouldn't be scared of insects because even the biggest ones are so much much smaller than us. But it's because they're so powerful for their size! I mean, that wasp was towing around something that weighs more than it does!
We have a lot of these things. They are amazing flyers, and quite intimidating, but they have no interest in people. We try to control the population by playing whack-a-wasp with tennis rackets. They're hard to kill, but they never attack. They just want to cicadas.
They only live for around a month, so other than being scary looking and digging holes in my garden they're really not much of a pest.
Thanks for putting that info here for everyone. I only discovered how harmless they really are when looking up the info to add to this video. It made me feel alot better! I don't have to be terrified of them anymore. (We have lots of these things flying around my yard.) Still...the sheer size of them creeps me out! I don't like large bugs of any kind - I don't know why.

Even though they aren't supposed to sting you, they scare me! They are so huge - they freak me out. I still run away from them.
Also - they look very similar to Japanese Hornets and other large hornets, who will sting!
