MJ didn't create or name the moon walk, nor did he claim either. Jeffrey Daniels of Shalamar taught MJ how to do the moonwalk. Daniels referred to the move as "the backslide". Bill Robinson, Cab Callaway, Bill Bailey, Daniel Haynes, Earl "Snake Hips" Tucker, Fred Astaire and many more tap dancers performed various version of the backslide and they all were instrumental in the origin of the "moon walk".
people should also realize that mr freeze of rocksteady crew can be seen doing the backglide (moonwalk) in movies like WILD STYLE and FLASHDANCE both movies where in production and released before michael jackson first performed the move at the motown show where he sung "billy jean"
@JessOvBHE Wrong still as you are not sliding across the floor and appear to be Gliding. I can do this in combat boots on asphalt roads. There's no sliding involved ;) Gliding you can do at any angle in anyy direction hence back glide. ;-)

I saw a film of Michael Jackson's life where he was behind the scenes while Bill Bailey sang and danced. In the film, Michael began imitating what Bill did on stage. So, it is actually stated that he inspired from him among many other dancers, I guess. That's what artists do.
