G2 makes a great product, but they don't make good videos!!! LOL I found this to be almost painful to watch, the guy's voice and inflection are awful!!!
Not a good video. You need to prep the caliper by cleaning it which they do not show. Most ppl paint the calipers while it's on the car. You have a 6 hr window to work with as the paint cannot be used later once activated. The best way to do it is to prep the calipers firsy, then paint the calipers lightly. You need about 3 coats.
If been using this product for ten years now and I have to say it work well but it will start to chip a little after two or three years. You will need to redo it to keep up with it. I will doing it for this year again.
hardest part I thought was cleaning the calipers, you need about 4+ cans of brake cleaner for 4 calipers, patience, and about 3 hours to get them look right, before even applying paint. Some people might not take so long on cleaning their calipers, but I cleaned every inch, because I wanted it to look perfect.
I tried the Preval sprayer as well but it got clogged.
Well, I only had 4 hours left to use it and didn't want to brush it on. So, I mixed a tiny bit of acetone and it worked. Hope the acetone doesn't hurt it...
I did this paint today, and it looks great. The only problem is that i didn't have any latex gloves like the video. This stuff is a ***** to get off my hands! Got any advice? I'm out of red lion soap so that's out.
after i mix the reactor and paint. would i be able to close and open the can everyday to do one caliper everyday or do i have to paint them all at once?
You have to do them all at once. They should give you two cans of paint and two tubes of reactor, that way you could do one axle at a time. I'd get a can of Duplicolor caliper paint and forget about it.
I totally agree. I tried the brush on method before and as you got closer to 4 hours, it'd thicken making it harder to spread. But when it's fresh, goes on like water!
I had my calipers chemically stripped again and redid them with the Preval sprayer (lots on eBay). If you're doing lots of calipers (I was doing 6), I'd recommend getting the engine paint package. There's more liquid for a marginal price increase.
Yes, I've used these kits at least 20-30 times over the past couple years... I even painted 4 calipers on a 07 BMW M6 and it turned out better than factory powdercoat!! Except the calipers on the M6 are 3 times the size of a regular car, so I had to use 2 kits doing a couple coats. I highly recommend this over powdercoating... from my experience the powdercoat is more prone to chipping... and the G2 paint will NOT fade like all the others...
The key, especially with used calipers, is to clean the shit out of them with high end brake cleaner(supplied in kit) and a brush to get rid of contamination and debris... Then apply 1-3 coats(depending of color being painted over)to completely cover visible parts of the caliper... Remember not to paint any moving parts such as caliper slides...or brake pad contact points. For best effect, you can paint the back of the outer(visible) pad, so the pad looks as good as the caliper in 10k miles..
It's just typical epoxy paint. Any aircraft paint supply has it.
Next time, keep the camera as close to the action as possible. Then you don't have to waste time explaining the 2/3's full can. ALTHOUGH FOR SOME, you have to hold their hand for anything. Brushing is preferred, as it mixes in any imperfection of oily finger prints, where spraying lays on top and peels off later. Use a heat gun to warm the metal first. Then apply paint. It will penetrate easier.
I rather go with spray

Would spraying brake clean on the painted surface melt the paint?

No, this stuff will dry under water even. It's a chemical reaction. It doesn't air dry.
You have about 4-6 hours. Maybe less if it's a hot day.

i dont like brushing cuz it leaves streaks from where the brush was... any advice on that?

Use a thinner and use multiple coats?
JeffEmbracedDC 2 years ago
stuff goes on pretty runny so it doesn't leave brush marks unless you've let the paint dry and thicken up
rcantu1971 2 years ago
use a spong brush

The brush on finish was a little better than I thought but definately not as good as spray painting, plus it takes alot longer to brush it.

Cleaning the pads is the worst part. That spray doesn't work at all. You need to get stronger stuff than that, than you need to sand.
I recommend sandblasting or steam cleaning. Any way you do it, IT SUCKS! lol
