hmm.. I"ve tried this codec compared to divx 7 and I have had the opposite experience. That is, I'm using adobe encoder, and I encode to divx and get twice the quality for the same bitrate. Possibly it is encoding in H.264 though, as it is HD... and maybe premiers encode engine is turd. No idea.

I would say 1/3 smaller.

Well, my x264 SD movie rippings are around 1.7 gigabytes with every bells and whistles (video only + 200-300 megabytes audio).

350 megabytes  for normal length movie looks horrible!!

CLI program called mencoder. In order to use it you have read manuals etc but output is excellent. Program for geeks :-)

i have the GUI and got everything figured out last night. but i cant find an AC3 that is compatible with my ps3, if i put it in the mkv container i can run it through mkv2vob and get working but i think theres a slight quality loss. idk if there is. just kinda seemed that way. any ideas or plugins u know of?

It takes a long time to encode the videos though. My dvd rips are half the size they used to be but better quality. That's the only drawback that I can see, but the quality is amazing.

i agree.. altho h264 might be smaller but it's very hard 2 convert 2 stuff 4 like PSPs.. n ipods.. n onli can use quicktime 2 watch..

VLC plays virtually everything. especially .mov files or .mp4 with h.264 codec.

otherwise you can convert it to a .mkv file (like alot of trailers on Azureus) and still use the h.264 codec.

H264 is a great alternative to XVID and DIVX but will never be a replacement. H264 is not ready for prime time, still to difficult to edit, encode, etc.  When you have to be a geek to play with your videos or you have to convert them to another formast to edit them the masses will not use it. I have a Sanyo H264 camcorder, love it, but hate having to use anything an "Apple" viewer.

Use VLC media player (pc mac or linux). Is open source and is better for pc. Quicktime 7 is falling a part lately for pc.
