Latin influence stronger in some 60's Soul songs than others. If you know what you're looking for a Black/Latin fusion often becomes apparent . 'The Drifter' (Ray Pollard) features bongo martillo pattern in the quieter sections. The last upstroke's cut short, losing Latin feel but on the Opals 'Does It Matter' there's a guiro scraping, Cuban style. I'd put money the rhythm so common in slower numbers like 'Walk On By' or Brooks O'Dell 'Watch Your Step' is Bolero derived. No surprise after 1950's
How terribly poignant those scenes from Stafford are, we all look so young seems like yesterday, at least the music is timeless…..nice one Mr Hennigan
Ah, I remember buying the boot of this hot off the presses at Stafford. It had been produced on UK vinyl blanks so the sound was excellent but it had the 'prongs' from the pressed-out centre to give the game away.
Wow, i was watching this and remembering what great times and music we enjoyed when, i saw myself on this video....1:02. Im the guy in the blue and yellow coat on the stairs. Great work fella....keeping the faith as always.

i miss you so much grandpa. Im very proud that you all love his music. His real name is Luther Walker, His stage name was Tommy Navarro. Your gone but never forgotten grandpa.
andyriot,no prob with decades bud- the soul scene is thankfully not ageist ! i've enjoyed older fans telling me tales of stevie wonder @ watford ! etc ktf p
Absolutely beautiful and a cracking video too - one of the best records to come out of the Northern scene, in my opinion. I have always loved the big beat ballad Stafford sound and this is as good as it gets - mid tempo, danceable and heartfelt lyrics and vocals...genius!
The great thing about these is the mix of images and music - it really comes close to summing up what these soul sounds mean to us all. Mind you, that picture of Guy and Keb at the end was a bit scary!
"The Northern Soul scene was bloody terrible at the time, dying for sure, and the energy and drive which came from the 60`s Mafia" (which a very militant group of us became known as) managed over a couple of years to breath life back into the scene and re-establish the scenes values and make certain venues in both England and Scotland worth travelling to."
Guy Hennigan - la pelle nera for connoissers of soul
Rob - you spot on there: even brought a Mecca/Ritz Jazz Funk devotee like me back just for the Hennigan/Darge partnership. The breath of fresh air that this venue and its "people" brought to what was then a decaying and "preservation Soul scene can not be underestimated. The only other club to have such an appeal (and pull on the wider North West//Midlands Soul Scene) back in those halcyon days of the mid 80s was Colin Curtis's Berlin Sessions in Manchester
