There are two related hospital shows on the BBC: Casualty (like ER) and Holby City (a ward in the same hospital). Ben (in blue) was a midwife in Holby City while Simon started out as security in Casualty then started training for a nurse (I think). They got into a relationship (not the first gay rel. on Casualty but the first with amazingly hot kisses) so there were some crossover episodes.

Part 2 of my comment: Then, well I don't know what happened behind the scenes - either the actors asked to be written off, or the showrunners remembered that they're actually homophobic (I am VERY bitter about this).

First the Simon/Ben relationship broke up in the most stupid way possible, and then . . . well, I don't know if you want to be spoiled, but Ben was written off in the most senseless way ever. I haven't watched the shows since - they're still running, you can find them on imdb.
