Very cool. I'm getting a yellow Nissan Xterra. Going with the yellow cuz it reminds me of the Joe Adventure team support vehicle I played with as a tike.
Great vid, thanks! I wanted to ask (since you were there) if you thought G. Wayne Miller's Toy Wars accurately depicted what was going on in the industry at the time?
Same here. All I knew about was the one with the sporty red number and the song "You Really Got Me." Did I imagine it or did Ken look reeeeally interested when that guy dropped his pants?
Heh. It reminds me of that parody of the Nissan sporty red car ad that was done for Mad TV. It was the one where Barbie ran off with some girl on a motorcyle. I would love to see one where the GI Joe character ran off with Ken. They'd be great together. ;D
Aren't 'Kimber Benton' and 'Eric Raymond' also in-jokes ? Those are the names of Jem characters, made into dolls by Hasbro in the mid-80s. "Mike Triumph" seems to be a good name for a GI Joe, I don't know if that's a Joe joke.
Yes. Since Jem was a Hasbro license, the characters are named after Jem's sister Kimber and arch rival Eric Raymond. Mike Triumph is a GIJoe character from the 1970's Adventure Team line. All part of the swipe at Mattel. Oddly enough when Toy Story came out, it was Mattel that embraced the use of Barbie and Hasbro refused the use of GIJoe. Part of the quick management turnover in the big toy companies.
Actually, Mattel wouldn't let them have Barbie for "Toy Story" - she appears only in "Toy Story 2"; Bo Peep is the character in the first film that was originally written for Barbie.
Another swipe at Barbie is in the movie "Small Soldiers"...
The "fake" credits list Vision Crew first. Since they of course created all of the miniatures and cool props for the commercial.
There were no foley effects in the original and the music was wrong (my opinion) so I remixed it. The credits are an inside joke from someone (me) who was working with the Hasbro GI Joe team at the time to the tight asses at Mattel. This is explained at the top right.
What the hell? The commercial is real, as it was made by Will Vinton Studios. No one in connection to the commercial is listed in the fake credits. I don't know where this came from as the spot never aired on television. Since Nissan pulled the plug on the "Enjoy the Ride" campaign before this spot was due to air during the Superbowl.
Just as I said about the first vid which is my all-time favorite ad, this is how we should all live!!! As I say,"Every day you live is ONE LESS DAY you will be able to live - SEIZE THE PRESENT MOMENT!".
poor inadequate Ken hahahaha.

Man, Mattel really needed to grow a pair and let this one go. This was a good follow up to the one we all remember.

Too bad companies can't just enjoy a god commercial and suck it up.

Great follow up to the first video- actually this is the first ive seen this one. The first video is definitly the most memorable tho.

The first one was certainly unique, and a breakthrough, but the animation, and production values, on this are much better.

There was a LOT of politics at the big H at that time. Sadly if forced some good people from the company.

Never knew they had a second ad. They could've pushed out a few more based on that concept. It was funny and original.
