@LuzziTennis Thats funny. Beretta's undercover getups were rarely convincing even at a superficial level. I loved the show because it was so cornball at times that it was a source of entertainment on its own. However,
if you ever worked in the newspaper business back then you would see reporters/writers coming out of bars in the a.m. after having worked the night shift. They looked very, very rough and could frequently be confused for bums. (some pretty much were)
This song is about the real Robert Blake. He didn't keep his eye on the sparrow=He didn't stay focused; things went out of his control. When the choices became narrow=He made the wrong choice.. Why did he go where that cold wind blows=Crime. Learn from the song and "DON'T DO IT".
Too Bad We Don´t Have Good T.V. Shows Like This Today. I Don´t Even Watch T.V. Anymore. All the Shows That Are On Today Are Nothing But Crap That Caters To A Fucked Up Teenage Audience.
Ok, I found a sammy davis jr album that has the actual song. Its on (cd universe dot com) and its the definitive collection song #20. Its length is 2:24. It sounds tight!! Possibly early rap (Just kidding!!)!!
I hate that the song is only a minute long!! This should have been on one of sammy's albums...like a 70's gangster album of hood tales using low bass guitars, strings, horns, all that!!
I was 16...maybe 17 when this show came out. I loved it and Starsky and Hutch. There were always real hot (somewhat slutty) women hangin' out on the shows, and that was a plus for a 16 year old!
May 4, 2011 - a decade since that awful evening at Vitello's Restaurant in Studio City... hopefully Robert Blake is living his life...and is grateful... was it a case of life imitating art? or, art imitating life? Baretta was a good tv series in its time...
Remember when his mom always made corn beef and his dad hated the fact that they had to have hash to use up the leftovers? Then Our Gang came over and ate all the corned beef. I loved that episode. Not a lot of gunplay but still pretty good.
Came here with the guilty conciense o things. I think i need to be saved... in some way... u know my magvical voice... i coulda worked for Waddle Media...but them arent advertisin enymo...
Sammy Davis, Jr. had the incredible voice on this theme. So sorry that things turned out bad for Robert Blake with his wife and all. May God bring him and her family thru that................
I remember being a teenager and wanting Robert Blake to do very naughty things to me. That body, those lips, he was such a HOTTIE back then. What the hell happened?
@NYOLSKOOL Hehehe! I think all of us that were in NYC that evening was watching Baretta! That was the number one show for that time slot, and you're right..never got a chance to see the end of that episode.
Does anyone think that a show about a cop who drives a crappy car, lives in a shithole apartment with a bird, and dresses like this guy would make it today? But, still, name one cop character on today cooler than Baretta. Don't worry, I can't name one either.
I work at a state prison and I babysit crybabies. That they need this and that. I sing a little bit of barretta theme song. "Don't do the crime if you can't do the time, don't do it" They either stop bothering me or they start saying I'm discriminating becasue they are hispanic or black.
I remember watching these show lol baretta was drunk laughing my ass off, I fergot what episode it was on, but it was funny as hell, Baretta was like helping some lady in the van and we was drunk, they took him off the air and never seen anymore shows, not sure if it was in the script,
I remember this show from when I was a little kid in the 70's and this hasn't been aired in re-runs(before TV Land) since the early 80's the latest. I don't even know if TV Land aired this series.
LMFAO!!!! Sammy Davis Jr. has been dead for 20 years and Bonni Lee Blakely was murdered in 2001 or '02. I see what you're saying, they doing this in heaven,OK. You gave me the best laugh in months.
This was my favorite TV show in the mid to late seventies. I couldn't wait for Wednesday night, never missed an episode. The seventies had such awesome cop shows, shows that were so cool!!!!! It is a shame that they can't make shows like that anymore!
Baretta had a Cockateel bird, thats why he did not have to go to the local office supply store to buy white out for correcting errors on the police reports.
I didn't realize Sammy sang that song....amazing! I also read that Fred the bird was actually 4 different "Freds" and they are all still alive in California.
Boy, did NYC ever look like a shithole in the 70s. Love how theme music from back then just managed to get people into the mood of whatever show they were introducing.
@cannuckistan I grew up watching these as a preteen when they first aired and looking back on them now - how right you are - outdoor American on 70s TV shows looked run down - I don't know if that was done on purpose for the 70s cop shows to look grimey, if it had to do with the ugly colors and clothes of the 70s or if that was reality (probably all of the above). Also, because it was the 70s Baretta had to be a cop who was like anti-establishment - a contradiction but the only way to sell it.
I remember fred the cuckotoo would answer the phone when baretta was drunk or hung over. all he could say was Hello, but to a 7 yrs old it was the coolest shit.
@sierria64 Well, he really didn't (do time) as he wasn't found guilty. Don't know if he was; he was certainly guilty of poor judgement in that particular wife. Given her history of scamming other guys he wasn't they only one who had a motive...
