  • He killed his wife!

  • Blake should have taken Sammy advice!!!!!!!!!!

  • One of the best cop shows EVER...

  • He is working as a cowboy (a nearly 80 year old cowboy?!) these days. Lost everything when he popped his wife but from the sounds of it, she almost deserved it....I said ALMOST LOL

  • WOW! being back memories in my parents basement watching this show....Miss all the old shows. Nothing but crap on these days

  • No NO.dont do it!...GO Sammy

  • He musta blockd this song out his mind, when he iced his wife

  • i loved this show

  • Whenever people complain about noting but crap on TV now days, I remind them of this steaming load of dung from back my day.

  • Greatest theme song of any TV show.......

  • @greekpapi the world's most familiar song for all songs was the sanford and sons theme.

  • Sammy also does a good cover of Chico and The Man. LOL!

  • 0:42 - undercover as a derelict wearing a necktie. Bet that fooled 'em.

  • @LuzziTennis Thats funny. Beretta's undercover getups were rarely convincing even at a superficial level. I loved the show because it was so cornball at times that it was a source of entertainment on its own. However,

if you ever worked in the newspaper business back then you would see reporters/writers coming out of bars in the a.m. after having worked the night shift. They looked very, very rough and could frequently be confused for bums. (some pretty much were)

  • that's the great Sammy Davis Jr. on vocals!

  • This song is about the real Robert Blake. He didn't keep his eye on the sparrow=He didn't stay focused; things went out of his control. When the choices became narrow=He made the wrong choice.. Why did he go where that cold wind blows=Crime. Learn from the song and "DON'T DO IT".

  • Dave Grusin and Sammy Davis Jr.; two pocket sized giants. What else could be the outcome than a great theme.

  • I LOVED Baretta!!

  • Robert Blake got away with murder and did the crime but DIDNT DO ANY TIME!!!

  • @MultiPelias Someone is innocent till PROVEN guilty. It wasn't proven, so he's not guilty.

  • "Don't go to bed with a chicken on your head....."

Thanks to my playground buddy Eric for teaching me alternative lyrics.

  • @MervynCruddy : )) That's almost like my sisters' version, "with them naps in yo head, nawww". Crazy.

  • A old favorite

  • don't go to bed

after shooting your wife in the head

    don't do it

  • I always thought that someone should have used Sabotage by The Beastie Boys for a real cop TV show theme. I love that music vid.

  • Words of wisdom from the Candy Man

  • This is what a cop show should be like, not the pretty boy shows we have today with their made up hair and designer clothing. Bring back the '70s!

  • Thumbs up if this is the best t.v. theme EVER!!!

  • Awwww! Little Mikey from the Little Rascals is all grown up!

  • Did he sing the theme to Cannon?

  • Too Bad We Don´t Have Good T.V. Shows Like This Today. I Don´t Even Watch T.V. Anymore. All the Shows That Are On Today Are Nothing But Crap That Caters To A Fucked Up Teenage Audience.

  • Was that Owen Wilson who came out of that window????

  • Ok, I found a sammy davis jr album that has the actual song. Its on (cd universe dot com) and its the definitive collection song #20. Its length is 2:24. It sounds tight!! Possibly early rap (Just kidding!!)!!

  • Please, please, please find it for me (us on youtube) and post it!!! Lyrics are simple but the music is hard!!

  • Sammy...... was a triple Threat: Singing, Dancing, Acting..he could Do It All and with a COOL no Jive ATTITUDE...

  • I hate that the song is only a minute long!! This should have been on one of sammy's albums...like a 70's gangster album of hood tales using low bass guitars, strings, horns, all that!!

  • @supafiend82 This song was released as a single. I have it somewhere! It was about 3 minutes long.

  • Sammy Davis was the man!! It's just a little bit funky in here!!!

  • Sammy Davis was FUNKY baby!!

  • I was 16...maybe 17 when this show came out. I loved it and Starsky and Hutch. There were always real hot (somewhat slutty) women hangin' out on the shows, and that was a plus for a 16 year old!

  • I don't like that short, slimy guy from the Rocky movies.

  • May 4, 2011 - a decade since that awful evening at Vitello's Restaurant in Studio City... hopefully Robert Blake is living his life...and is grateful... was it a case of life imitating art? or, art imitating life? Baretta was a good tv series in its time...

  • Any chance of this show being updated if they could do it justice???

  • my dad and i used to watch reruns. it made me wish i was back in the day.

  • I love this show and the song. We always watched it when I was growing up:)

  • This show should be on TV Land!

  • I only watched this show because of the cockatoo. :-)

  • This is Sammy Davis jr singing.

  • DON'T DO THE CRIME IF YOU CAN'T DO THE TIME...

  • Remember when his mom always made corn beef and his dad hated the fact that they had to have hash to use up the leftovers? Then Our Gang came over and ate all the corned beef. I loved that episode. Not a lot of gunplay but still pretty good.

  • Great Dave Grusin!!!!

  • i also like pinda,s

  • Awesome theme song! Always loved it.

  • anybody remember the episode when Beretta let a streetkid stay with him and he ate his bird...lol That was crazy!!!!

  • Came here with the guilty conciense o things. I think i need to be saved... in some way... u know my magvical voice... i coulda worked for Waddle Media...but them arent advertisin enymo...

  • Sammy Davis, Jr. had the incredible voice on this theme. So sorry that things turned out bad for Robert Blake with his wife and all. May God bring him and her family thru that................

  • Bastard

    Baretta

    Blasted

    His

    Wife.

  • Aw hell naw gettin dragged down dah block lol@0:08

  • did any other kid used to laugh at the line about going to bed with a price on your head? i used to literally think they meant a sticker.

  • Sing it Sammy!!!!!!

  • One of my favorites!

  • These days the criminals on the cop shows like Law and Order are pedophiles and rapists almost exclusively. This wasn't the case back in the 70s.

  • Hippest TV show theme song ever!

  • @LeCutter ...I agree

  • man, i LOVED this show when i was a kid. still love the theme song.

  • I always thought Barretta had the coolest opening but what happened to the GTO.

  • dont go to bed when you shot your wife in the face

  • I remember being a teenager and wanting Robert Blake to do very naughty things to me. That body, those lips, he was such a HOTTIE back then. What the hell happened?

  • @psychoboysaz He stopped using black hair dye and people saw what a phony he was. Plus, wasn't he about 60 when he did Baretta anyway?

BTW, like OJ, he did the crime.

  • @ORLY21 Actually he was 42, and it was the 70's, back then he was the man. Regardless of what he's done recently Baretta was a great show.

  • @psychoboysaz He was one helluva an actor too. For real proof watch "In Cold Blood" one day.

  • @hanoc101 He was good. Looking back at his career, as well as he did, it's a shame he never got one movie role that became iconic.

  • @hanoc101 "The Money Train",Blake pulled the carpet out under from Snipes and Harrleson.

  • @hanoc101 Try "Of Mice and Men",with Randy Quade,also.

  • @hanoc101 I liked him in "Lost Highway" too.

  • uqe pasaria con este actor ya no se supo nada de el, como se llamaba el loro?

  • THE REAL GOLDEN AGE OF TV SHOWS OF ALL THE TIMES

  • baretta was a cool show

  • This guy was one helluva actor at one time. Just watch "In Cold Blood" and you'll see what I mean

  • Blijft een Geweldig nummer!!!! Far out....

  • murderer.

  • @mzkynk acquitted

  • @NYOLSKOOL Yeah..he coulda stopped those corrupt cops that I saw loading stuff into their cars! Evidence MY ASS!!! Hehehe!

  • @NYOLSKOOL Hehehe! I think all of us that were in NYC that evening was watching Baretta! That was the number one show for that time slot, and you're right..never got a chance to see the end of that episode.

  • @EDDSMITTY1 we sure coulda used him after the lights went out..s.w.a.t. too..haha

  • "Yeah baby....just too much.......way too much man, groooovy.

    He whacked that lady.....dayum!

  • Does anyone think that a show about a cop who drives a crappy car, lives in a shithole apartment with a bird, and dresses like this guy would make it today? But, still, name one cop character on today cooler than Baretta. Don't worry, I can't name one either.

    PEACE

  • i agree i would love to see this on tv land

  • Esto no se consigue es Sammy Davis Junior qdqg+

  • I work at a state prison and I babysit crybabies. That they need this and that. I sing a little bit of barretta theme song. "Don't do the crime if you can't do the time, don't do it" They either stop bothering me or they start saying I'm discriminating becasue they are hispanic or black.

  • This should air on TV Land

  • baretta was on tv in nyc in 77 when the blackout hit...never saw the ending to that episode..haha

  • la cagooo baretta!!!!! un clasico ,pero de los buenos..

  • I remember watching these show lol baretta was drunk laughing my ass off, I fergot what episode it was on, but it was funny as hell, Baretta was like helping some lady in the van and we was drunk, they took him off the air and never seen anymore shows, not sure if it was in the script,

  • Mr. Sammy Davis Jr.!!!

  • Where can i watch the full version of Baretta. I love the show

  • Where can i watch the full version of Baretta. I love the show

  • sammy was the best!

  • Don't do the crime if you can't do the time......don't do it.

  • This was a pretty decent show, but the theme show was the best part.

  • I remember this show from when I was a little kid in the 70's and this hasn't been aired in re-runs(before TV Land) since the early 80's the latest. I don't even know if TV Land aired this series.

  • LMFAO!!!! Sammy Davis Jr. has been dead for 20 years and Bonni Lee Blakely was murdered in 2001 or '02. I see what you're saying, they doing this in heaven,OK. You gave me the best laugh in months.

  • What city was Baretta from?

  • @2008ljr NY of course

  • Great theme song....great show! The cop shows from the 70's were the best!

  • This was my favorite TV show in the mid to late seventies. I couldn't wait for Wednesday night, never missed an episode. The seventies had such awesome cop shows, shows that were so cool!!!!! It is a shame that they can't make shows like that anymore!

  • The idea for the cookatoo came from the cop drama Serpico starring Al Pacino

  • keep your eye on a sparrow.Great voice.

  • Baretta had a Cockateel bird, thats why he did not have to go to the local office supply store to buy white out for correcting errors on the police reports.

  • Awesome shit!!!!

  • I didn't realize Sammy sang that song....amazing! I also read that Fred the bird was actually 4 different "Freds" and they are all still alive in California.

  • between this and David Carradine's Kung Fu series I am SET FOR THE SUMMER!

WHAT actors/ guest stars-the best! thanx tvtestcard!

  • I wonder if MacGyver was the illegitimate offspring of Baretta and Pete Thornton...

  • Boy the 70s had some great theme songs that just stuck with you.

  • Thanks for posting--great memories of both the theme and the show.

  • I did not NO Sammy Davis Jr sing the theme song wow

  • great theme song. sammy is brillant!

  • cool show from the 70s

  • TV Land Should Put This On!

  • LOL in the 5th grade I was a member of the Baretta Fan Club.

Is that Dennis Franz (NYPD Blue) with the bandage on his head in the show's open?

  • No, its Burt Young.

  • Best cop show. Ever.

  • Great Show!!!

  • I used to love this show back in the day.

  • The Lyrics in this song very much foreshadow as to what was to unfold 35+ years later with Robert Blake.

  • Boy, did NYC ever look like a shithole in the 70s. Love how theme music from back then just managed to get people into the mood of whatever show they were introducing.

  • @cannuckistan

    I agree...like a choda.

Gotta' love Sammy Davis Jr. singing this though, man, those were the days...

  • Actually the Baretta episodes were shot in L.A.

  • @cannuckistan I grew up watching these as a preteen when they first aired and looking back on them now - how right you are - outdoor American on 70s TV shows looked run down - I don't know if that was done on purpose for the 70s cop shows to look grimey, if it had to do with the ugly colors and clothes of the 70s or if that was reality (probably all of the above). Also, because it was the 70s Baretta had to be a cop who was like anti-establishment - a contradiction but the only way to sell it.

  • bueno a mi esposo le encanta esta serie pero a mi no pues yo tengo 22 años y nose nada de esta serie pero el tiene 34 y le encanta!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Did he beat the murder rap ? and was it Joey in the Our Gang comedies ?

  • yes he did and yes he was on our gang

  • and keep your eye on the sparrow!

  • Don't do it!!

  • Mickey how you strayed

  • I keep forgetting that Sammy sang the theme to this show. Bobby Blake won an Emmy for this show if I'm mistaken!

  • liked baretta as a kid and robert blake was cool

  • I remember fred the cuckotoo would answer the phone when baretta was drunk or hung over. all he could say was Hello, but to a 7 yrs old it was the coolest shit.

  • robert blake should have listened to the lyrics

  • @sierria64 Why? He's Innocent!

  • @sierria64 Well, he really didn't (do time) as he wasn't found guilty. Don't know if he was; he was certainly guilty of poor judgement in that particular wife. Given her history of scamming other guys he wasn't they only one who had a motive...

  • Where can we find episodes of Baretta on youtube?

  • cool show

  • my man was kojack tho...and dirty ass columbo was a beast....i like how he catch mothafuckas up on the sneak....mattlock too....they dont make em like they used to...all this ole csi bullshit and this and that...

  • i wanted to be pepper though.

  • @tranurse Me too...I remember chosing to be Pepper whenever we would play cops and robbers when I was little.

  • can't forget Cannon

  • Baretta was double undercover:

    1) a cop

    2) a brutha

  • sammy davis doing "chico and the man" is also great .

  • Did he do a version of that theme? Jose Feliciano did it for the show.

  • I believesammy did it first but feliciano's version was the one used for the show.

type "sammy davis does chico and the man"

  • Are you sure about that? I watched it every week (I was an adult) and remember Sammy's version being played

  • not on "chico and the man"

you must be talking about "baretta"

  • please someone uplode a few seasons of baretta-okay? Wanna see what i missed

  • i share a birthday with robert blake and greta garbo--we virgos are BADASSES

  • CSI aint got nothing on Baretta!

  • Good memories : )

  • greatest TV theme music ever

  • Blake/Baretta a MAN and a funny Mother fucker who spoke his Mind..NOT like these douche bags on TV today!

  • @FTWEVERYONE I agree...although Stabler/Benson/Fin/Munch don't hold t heir tongues either.

  • Baretta was on the tv back when the lights went out in `77 in NYC.

  • Baretta was one of the first of the modern "cop shows" that had a good "gritty" feel to it. While the violence was done to the standards of the day, it proved that the absolute gore and anger the shows center on today isn't needed when you have good acting, writing directing and photography.

  • Baretta was one of the coolest tv shows around in the 70's. ABC had a bunch of hit shows such as this, Barney Miller, Starskey and Hutch, Charlies Angels to name a few.

  • @Zippertheslipper Man Baretta and S&H run neck and neck as the best cop shows ever. Can't forget Roster and Huggy Bear...

  • Comment removed

  • That last verse of this version of the theme song wasn't included on the released version of the song.

  • you kinda gotta remember this show aired over 35 years ago. I kinda bet that people looking at reruns of CSI in the year 2044 would think CSI is cheesey.

  • CSI looks cheesy NOW!!

    L.O.L.

  • dude, i thought the same thing word for word a half second before i read what you typed.

  • Great minds think alike eh?

    I'll stick with The Wire

  • Quien recuerda la serie CHICAGO? la cantante al parecer era Randy Crawford.

  • One of the greatest theme songs ever!!!

  • @bornwithaBA:

Dave Grusin is one of my musical heroes.

  • Robert Blake's first role: he's the kid who sold Humphrey Bogart the lottery ticket in 'Treasure of the Sierra Madre'.

That's li'l Bobby Blake. Bogie gave him a kitten and his first cigarette.
