Don't use bleach!, don't even use tap-water unless you live near a reverse osmosis water treatment center that doesn't add artificial chloride to the water, spring water is what you want! Don't kill the natural yeasts found on the apples, they will eventually be out-competed by the yeast you add anyway.
I like seeing things not running particularly smoothly (like getting the pulp out of the press), and I wish you wouldn't cut out dealing with it. I like it when video hosts aren't particularly smooth. Anyway, great work and thanks!
Be careful with the use of chlorine in any fermentation process. It is very difficult to wash off and developes carcinogens during fermentation. If you feel the need to sanitize apples use potassium or sodium metabisulfite.
Could you also feed those apple bits and pieces to your pigs? I would imagine they would love those bits.. Heck, I would imagine cows would also love it..?
I think if you built an extender box (removable) that added about a foot and a half of height to your chopper you wouldn't have to risk getting a piece of apple shot into your eye.
Our tree is in it's prime for picking at the moment, It's dropped a load I missed already.
I read on another site that you can de-core the apples pulp, press and strain, then put in a wooden Keg with a hole in it to let it ferment naturally by its self without adding yeast, do you think this is ok?
I live in England where do you get your yeast from?
I'm from england too (somerset arrr). The yeast is in the apples. You should wash them but not bleach them. Windfalls are ok if they look ok to eat. There are many foods that naturally contain yeast. Wine yeast would be ok to use if you feel the need.
It would appear you are correct, I wonder how they know this tho, I guess when it grows in one place then another, it must have spors that travel thru the air or something??
Actually, it doesn't reproduce with spores. It is a single celled organism that reproduces by budding a clone. It does so Q-U-I-C-K-L-Y. They discovered this when they would leave Roman meal (flour and water) for their dead and it would mysteriously double in size in a couple of hours.
Oh yeah, just read a bit about yeast, Yeast is an interesting product, I used to be a baker for 8 years and didn't even think about how they grow Yeast, apparently that is another reason why they used to press wine berries with bare feet because there is natural Yeast between the toes, uggghh yuck! haha! I lost most of the apples picked they went bad from a few that were in the bunch.
if you install a lengh of pipe (PVC) say normal down pipe (guttering pipe) with some blades at the bottom into the top of the slide then you should be able to place the apples in one ontop of then next and give em a whack with your hand a they will fall into the grinder in slices
great video the best i have an old press and rebuilting it so i can make so cider this coming season. i learned a lot watching the video. thanks for video you did a great job
Great video for the cider basics. For what you Americans call 'hard' cider (if it's not alcoholic it's just plain apple juice), try not to get the apples in contact with any metal in the process. Apple cider and metal don't mix.
"wow that was good, ill be having plenty of that later on" lol This is one of the best vids i have seen on youtube in ages. thank you very much. im gona make some cider in the near future.
great vid, im in the process of making my first ever batch of cider, so in new to this and im more or less doing it the same way, albeit with out the fancy press! ive made my own basic press with 2 bits of hard wood and some g-clamps. but why soak them in bleach? i thought apple skin had its own kind of bacteria that helps the fermentation ?
that was a great video im very interested in making hard cider this year and have a 5 gallon carboy. how many apples, in weight, did it take you to make 5 gallons of apple cider? roughly

Could you not build yourself an extension to the neck of the press to keep the apples from popping back out?
warriorscholar 2 years ago
Why go through all the trouble of a press, why not just use a juicer?
DesertFox01 2 years ago
My juicer fried after 10 kg of apples... No good!

In the US - Apple Juice = Apple Cider
I don't know why they call it that.... it's probably the same reason they think there's a silent H in 'Herb'.... :)
mitchamus 2 years ago
