  • i love diaspora :)

  • These guys are going to be challenged when things get really complicated at the core since they have chosen Ruby middleware instead of Java :).

  • Ilya's skip at the end makes me laugh every time!

  • Diaspora is great dev is greats..............♥

  • So, this is what Kyles cousin does, when not visiting SouthPark.........

  • I, for one, welcome the lack of our old Facebook overlords.

  • 73 people who gave amay0325 & awallace1995 a thumbs up worship Facebook for spying them all the time and making money out of their data

  • Good job, guys, take your time, the firsts impressions are always essential...

  • I can't wait for Diaspora to start working... I have had enough of Facebook and their freaking catches and crap. There are 3 fake profiles of me and nothing is being done for around 6 months now. Assholes... Anyways, Diaspora really looks great, I really hope it will work out!

  • it's enough to have police, fbi, interpol etc., nobody needs his neighbor to spy on him.. i think everyone agrees on this so we really don't need to debate whether diaspora is "something dumb LOL". facebook is rotting from the inside, it's time the world becomes at ease with this fact.. i don't see how one couldn't but whatever, let's blame good old conditioning -.-

  • and this is the point where facebook clearly loses, mb not with the launch of diaspora but in time they clearly will. if MyCube or Diaspora or another completely new social network will take over the facebook role: their era is crumbling, the company becomes a whole lot too decadent and since google transformed into this scary golem the online community became much more aware and sensitive concerning the "election" of such enterprises handling huge amounts of userdata into omnipotent positions.

  • &tbh the question whether this is "something dumb LOL" or not clearly doesn't seem like a question you seem to be able to evaluate, since you kiddys seem to be looking for all the wrong criteria.. probably they won't have a fuckin' farmville 2.0, neither will they reinvent the newsfeed but who cares if they _invented_ their innovations as long as their system will become the better and user friendlier one..? the question is not: why go to diaspora but rather: why would you want to stay with fb?

  • @awallace1995 &amay- seems like they're not fishing for sheep at least. based on what exactly do you make your judgement? this system seems a lot cleaner than the facebook concept (imo their interface as well btw), but hey who gives a shit what the interface looks like as long as you don't need to make the compromise of prostituting yourself online? maybe you and your 16yo friends won't join until diaspora gets trendy but I think they can survive without the brainwashed folk for the beginning

  • Eh.. to all the people saying FB is king etc.. Have you looked up the meaning of diaspora?? "a dispersion or spreading, as of people originally belonging to one nation or having a common culture"!

I can without a doubt say that most of my friends will create an account with diaspora and eventually leave Failbook due to their policies! !

  • THE BIGEST THING I DISLIKE ABOUT FACEBOOK IS THAT, EVERYONE CAN KNOW ABOUT ME ANYTHING....... THATS WHY I AM GOING TO LEAVE FACEBOOK........

  • almost a year later and this product is still in alpha getting ho-hum reviews from the blogosphere? it's a race against time & you've got to get your act together before faecesbook adds another 100 million users and it becomes unstoppable.

  • These guys need to get it together. It's almost a year and diaspora is still in Alpha?! come on...

  • @setsallset Fair point. Rome wasn't built in a day :) - I suspect maintaining robust security and openness and autonomy all at the same time is not so easy. I dd shoot a recent update - I'll post it in a day or three.

  • @wwwhatsup I agree that it takes time but do you guys have a timeline or release schedule? It seems strange that this open source social network is only accessible by invite. I've never been across an Alpha that lasted a year. I go to the site every month or so and nothing has changed. The blog was last updated jan 31! It's April... I am on the side of diaspora but buzz is fading. Do you guy have support from big players? Maybe Canonical? At this rate, this project is looking to be vaporware.

  • @setsallset Developing a secure social network platform from ground up is totally different thing than building a website like Facebook and then in years trying to get it more secure.

  • @setsallset They did a massive UI overhaul, beta is on the horizon. Chat is coming over the summer :P

  • @zikalify Thanks for the update. I just hope the buzz is still there when it launches. I've quit looking up the site. I did sign up for an invite and hopefully they can shoot me an email when it launches. I really want to support the project but it's hard to support something that has been MIA for a year. In internet terms, that's an eternity.

  • @setsallset Although not the core developers pod you can join other pods like diasp . org and ilikefreedom . org w/o an invite :)

  • @setsallset There are multiple sites running the alpha of it. You don't have to use the joindiaspora pod/site to try Diaspora*. I like the diasp. org pod, which is currently letting people sign up. You can see a list of pods at podupti.me

  • @setsallset Also you can sign up to one of those pods and add ppl at joindiaspora . com just like normal :D im zikalify @ joindiaspora . com

  • @setsallset

It takes a long time to write quality software my friend and this is no small project.

  • this guy is a regular on chelsea lately lol

  • bullets rather than bullet points would save this presentation..."like its all in one place, like, you know, its like you know sort put in one place, and rectify like put photos in like one area of the freedom server side like software, uhh, like uhh"...

I like the idea and look forward to trying it out...privacy is number one for me..

they need a new pitch man..

They should get the ShamWow guy...! step it up guys!

  • @drudizzle79 I don't know how often I have to say this - this was an informal presentation just as these guys were taking their first steps on the project. We (ISOC-NY) didn't need pitching as we presented the original challenge. Pay attention!

  • WTF ? this is a disaster in the making

  • "this is the internet " A picture of a cat ?

  • Thumbs up if we can all band together and drop Facebook on their proverbial Face. We have to show FB that WE HAVE THE CONTROL. When this is ready, we need to start a serious campaign to all leave FB. How cool would that be??

Don't think they are too big.....can you say Hi-5, or MySpace?? Nuff sed.

  • Mark Zuckerberg donated to this site because he thinks it's a cool idea! :)

  • Cool, Diaspora will develop just like Wordpress.

  • Fuck facebook seriously.

I signed up for Diaspora today. We need to make this grow fast.

  • @PersianPaladin I signed up but it has been weeks and still not invite :(

  • Diaspora is a joke, right?

  • Diaspora sounded promising but I have tried it out and it has many issues. I am now waiting for MyCube to launch and am hoping it can restore privacy to social media

  • @SuperAlexBal Rome wasn't built in a day.

  • Pick one person to do the talking and presentation, the rest can assist with Q&A.

The constant interruption while the main speaker is in the middle of a sentence is quite annoying -_-

  • @WinterWeaver I think you are missing the point. This was not a formal presentation but an informal meeting as a courtesy to ISOC-NY since ISOC-NY had presented the talk that inspired diaspora in the first place. It was the very first time the developers had discussed the project at all outside their own group, days before the kickstarter campaign. They are still feeling it out.

  • Facebook killer? Phah! -2 people loged in

  • amateur hour

  • Diaspora has a good concept and everything, but the bottom line is that this is once again university students hoping to create a social network much like Mark Zuckerberg did. I would honestly place my trust in a ''grownup'' company like Mycube. Quite surprised there hasn't been much hype about Mycube, what with everything they're planning to improve

  • its not about a newsfeed or a clean interface its about not giving up as many rights, owning your valued content, and not having your information sold to companies for the use in demographics BY FACEBOOK

i remember having a xanga and leaving that for myspace. and then i remember leaving my myspace for facebook. That information is still sitting there in perfect condition collecting virtual dust. Im ready to have piece of mind with my online pictures and video. I hope this goes well.

  • This won't work. Simply because Diaspora can't keep up with how easy people had been using facebook. From Signing up. I mean come on! Not everyone knows how to unzip the fucking archive (I assume they will be distributing Diaspora as Archives)!

  • This will end Facebook it will take some time but once this catches on it will be much better then facebook...

  • No Ads....Enough said

  • @ozjas have you seen myspace's or facebook's oweners' face?

  • In any case, I find it interesting that the two highest rated comments have 50+ and 41+ thumbs up on a 11k viewed obscure video... as well as being grammatically wretched and poorly constructed - and with both names being in a peculiarly similar format (a + last name + 4 digit number), with awallace1995 bolstering up amay0325's comment. How did both of these two asinine comments just happen to be voted 50+ and 41+ on a 11k viewed dissertation? Call it the paranoid schizopreniac within, but...

  • @jayinater ...it *seems* as though these posts were deliberately made to (quite poorly) cause a faux appearance of doom and doubt within us consumers, as a subtle way of bringing down the public opinion of Diaspora... it also seems as if whoever did this tried way too hard to "de-grammatify" the posts to make them sound normal and inconspicuous... this kind of seems fishy to me.

maybe its 3:50 in the morning and i REALLY need some sleep. in any case, i love speculating, be it nonsense or not.

  • holy crap! this is the staff of "The Big Bang Theory"!!! ;)

  • Typical NYU student, has to have the trendy mac for appearances, but does the work in Ubuntu. NYU is a community college.

  • @ozjas

    CoughLargescaleBackupCompaniesKeepTrackOfYourPastAccountsCoughBypassNonSearchabilityCoughRemebertheSeveralThousandUsernamesandPasswordsLoakedStraightto/b/overthesummer?Cough

  • @ozjas The whole point is that you don't have your data with anyone but yourself, you own your data not them. Everybody hosts their own"facebook node" on their own servers.

  • finalmente nada sucedio hoy (15/9/2010) se suponia que se iba estrenar este dia pero nada ocurrio, QUE DESGRACIA!!!!

  • I thought FB was shit the day I signed up.

  • All your stuff in once place, convienence... yeah for identity theft.

  • Guys where can I download those presentation sheets? This unsteady camera makes me sick! I forced myself to watch this vid and concentrate but finally gave up after about 10mins. Hope diaspora won't give me the same experience! (?)

  • @codeine1908 I would like to add. What it's going to take is a site to take social networking back to it's roots. Re-examine what the problems are in today's social networks and build something that is EASY and convenient with users in mind ! Focus on privacy, but don't make that your only goal. I'm willing to bet that 70% of the facebook users have no idea what's really going on. They just take what they here in the news and make there own assumptions.

  • @codeine1908 I agree facebook is "King" RIGHT NOW...They are slowly becoming obsolete. Sure this project has good intentions, but coming from a fellow coder and designer. They don't have a chance. Why??? Because facebook's biggest problem is not privacy. (Hence it is a problem, but not the biggest !) Here are just 2 problems. 1.They all the sudden stopped caring about the user experience on the site. 2.They have no idea how to stop spammers etc...That being said Facebook will fail within a year

  • what shit name diaspora..shit aint never gonna catch on you build the ultimate site but with a new like that the biggest flaw is fundamental the name..wtf brainless dicks think of a more catchy name for fuks sake..honestly.

  • guys, You could sell it so much better!!!!!!

You need to simplify your pitch, that server talk and other techno Jargon is such a turn off having read about this new anti-facebook site on bbc news.

If only you had my services lol

  • You are the future! And I am sure that this project will work! Good luck guys! And thank you!

  • The funny thing is these guys are brilliant,BUT don't know how to use their brilliance.(Eg.There building a site that functions similar to other social networking sites, but is based on the fact that users have more control over there data) That may be a great concept, but they will never reach a 10th of the users Facebook has. Facebook is "King" right now because they are ahead at the moment in innovation. A.)They have the cleanest and easiest interface. B) They were the first to offer Newsfeed

  • @amay0325 I agree amay- They are on to something, but if think anyone would ever join something dumb like that LOL.

  • @awallace1995 but if think?

I have no idea what you are saying.

  • @amay0325 I remember when Facebook was the scarcely used "college kid only" social networking site... although you are indeed correct in pointing out Facebook's clean design. The aesthetics of Facebook in contrast to Myspace made it look more professional and less "trashy", and in my opinion was the prime reason for the migration. In this case, aesthetics seem to have very little to do with the core and intent of Diaspora. Your argument seems to be slightly... recidivist in my opinion.

  • @amay0325 i think a website will be much cleaner without 999 ads :)

  • @amay0325 MySpace use to be this arrogant, when it was at the top of the world. Wait, MySpace what? Oh right. Exactly. Hurrrr.

  • @amay0325 First of all Facebook isn't ahead of innovation; it does the things that are already out there and people know how to work with those features, which makes it a succes. Second, Diaspora has taken Facebook's place when it comes down to the cleanest interface. Not just because Diaspora has less features; it actually has a cleaner lay-out and it will continue to have that.

  • this all is not professional. I cant see any software design. The prototype is not running for the presentation. i just can hear: is not implemented, could be made like this. etc. This is not a good software design and i think that diasopra is a good idea, but wont be that great with this team.

  • At least these guys are working on a solution, an alternative to Facebook. Let's give them credit for pushing for better and smarter. I will quit Facebook as soon as I am convinced by the Diaspora model.

  • 24min into the video and I hear covert talk behind digital rights management... once the cat is out of the bag, what I hear is you guys trying to control where he goes after and if you don't like it put him back in the bag... 1st its going to be costly and burdensome... 2nd I don't like it, what about fair use, once a piece of information is in my possession I should be freely to use it to enrich my life and the life of others in any way I see appropriately fit...

  • people don't always want privacy... people blog and stuff cause they need/want to express themselves... I like the diaspora project cause the control in how you express yourself is at the hands of the individual rather then on the hands of a corporation and I think who has that control is hugely important because I don't think people know what they need/want and its better they explore this themselves rather then a corporation guide them (let parents be the guidance/protectors when they need it)

  • Opensources isnt always targeted to the regular users. if you own a computer and like using the internet then you should now a little about how computers and servers work.

they are using ubuntu on a MacBook! that is awesome, even Mac users prefer Linux

  • will it run under linux and will there be an iphone app?

  • @drpaulaner Itll be cross platform and i guess apps will come out for iphone blackberry and android at some point too.

  • God, I just hope they hurry up and get code up on Gitorious soon, or start posting regular news updates at least. I haven't heard a peep out of the project.

  • I am really excited about this, and I don't get excited but Social Networks. Let's hope TPB (The Powers That Be) do not kill your project, or buy you out of your ideals. Good Luck!

  • I love the fact that they all had something to input, I think that the fact the team seems to balanced is a plus!

  • I think the guy you call "the ginger one" has got some good points, the main being that the experience of the new model shouldn't be too different from what they know on facebook. "Same surface, different engine"

None of them are good speakers, they use "like", "sort of" and similar redundant words way too much. However, who cares! They are developers! If they 1) understand the need they are trying to meet, and 2) are great coders, then the prospect is amazing.

  • Hey is there an actual channel for the Diaspora project / Team that I can subscribe to and keep up to date on what these guys are doing? Anyone, any information for me?

  • peer 2 peer social networking.

  • His voice and baldness... the ginger kid reminds me of Leonard from Big Bang Theory...

  • Interesting video - but I do think the ginger one with male pattern baldness has to go. I don't feel he has anything to offer. He shouldn't be on the team. He should just graduate and teach somewhere. The ther guys seem like a good team that can pull this off, but without the ginger one.

  • @SirCliveCalculator wtf does that mean? they all seem like they should be there, because this is the brainchild of all four of them.

  • @synth3tk I don't like his face.

  • Guys, please take a look at Vendor Relationship Management and in particular the Mine! project. Centralizing information is what this project does.

  • I will make an account when it starts

  • So yeah so umm yeah so we're really excited about Diaspora.

  • Wow; I was actually inspired by their idea and announcement earlier but after watching this I am a really concerned

  • @johnwyles what are your concerns? (granted, i'm only 1/4 of the way through the video right now)

  • I have to laugh at the stylists below - this was an informal meeting. Since the project was inspired by an ISOC-NY event - Eben Moglen's Freedom in the Cloud' talk the students gave us the courtesy of running the work in progress past us before they went public a few days later.

  • I'm very excited to see this thing go big -- but you need to work on the presentation! Professional slide show, rehearsed presentation, dress up a little, connect with your audience, and really sell the project.

  • Don't stutter when talking about something you want to explain. Comes out like you don't know what you are talking about. Don't play with your watch while talking. It makes it obvious you want to leave the place. Don't move your hands too much. It underestimates the audience and it makes you appear like you are having difficulty to explain your thinking (trying too much). Don't look at the slides when there is nothing to watch. Many many mistakes here. Get your stuff together next time.

  • @petsagouris WOW THANKS FOR THE TIPS THERE HANSEL

  • How do you propose to make it easy for the "average user" to start their own diaspora account? To become successful, you'd need a lot of users, and it's inevitable that many won't know how a web server works.

  • @bearchildofdeath No, the box will work even if you are the only one that have it, you can see all your stuff using your own box as a start.

There is no hard work to run our own web server, you have probably already many of them in your home, all network printers and broadband routers have it and you just switch on the power and they are up and running.

The problem with facebook is not the data you share, but the information they get about your contact network from the logs. Here only you know.
