Notice how the bird's telling the whale where she "can't" live and vice versa? Part of what Tom Waits does, you recognize yourself in everything. Not as if the bird and whale got together and they had a reasonable conversation about options.

I sing this song to my daughter. I have since she was born. While the song is likely a metaphor for star-crossed lovers, it's also very descriptive of a parent's love for their child.

When you have a child you are introduced to an unparalleled love for a person, but you know inevitably that person is going to have to move on to find their own life; find their own loves. They must live in their own world. Despite the unfathomable love you feel for them you must surrender them to the world.
