  • I have to sing this live, wish me good luck. My throat hurts already. And I haven't even started. But what a nice song, haha!

  • Avett?

  • @a89alex yes!

  • So beautiful..

  • simply beautiful

  • This song is actually about Lewis Carrol's forbidden love with Alice, the little girl who he based his "Alice's adventures in wonderland" books on.

  • this song makes me cry every time

  • excellent phot and tom waits!!!!!!!

  • If this song didn't allready, your comment would certainly have done the job.

Don't see my "little princess"as much as I would love to and this song describes the feeling right on the spot

  • Like so many people, I am truly moved by this song. So many of his songs. The pairing of Tom and Kathleen Brennen has resulted in one of the most brilliant song-writing duos EVER!! <3

  • :'[

  • I think I'm one of the small group of people that doesn't like his voice, in fact, I think it sounds downright silly. Still, I admit his lyrics are beautiful, and the song did move me.

  • One of the most amazing songs I've ever heard in my life. And I hear a LOT of songs!

  • song makes me cry every time...i love it and tom waits is the best

  • A bird on the tide... COME ON!!!!!!! This is too beautiful to be written by a human being. Tom Waits is beyond the human kind. He's the one god we should all follow.

  • can you smile and cry at the same time? yes you can

  • Notice how the bird's telling the whale where she "can't" live and vice versa? Part of what Tom Waits does, you recognize yourself in everything. Not as if the bird and whale got together and they had a reasonable conversation about options.

  • This has always been one of my favorite Tom Wait's songs.

  • I sing this song to my daughter. I have since she was born. While the song is likely a metaphor for star-crossed lovers, it's also very descriptive of a parent's love for their child.

When you have a child you are introduced to an unparalleled love for a person, but you know inevitably that person is going to have to move on to find their own life; find their own loves. They must live in their own world. Despite the unfathomable love you feel for them you must surrender them to the world.

  • @NotAlghaster - oh great now the song is even more moving/meaningful for me ...

  • @NotAlghaster Of all the time I have listened to the song, I never once thought that it would also be a good lullaby for children, but I definitely see your point of view on it now.

  • @NotAlghaster that was the first thing I've ever read on a youtube comments thread that actually moved me.
