Hershel's tactic of wrangling up the Walkers was actually beneficial and smart in a way. Maybe the reason why the farm was such a haven was because the inhabitants didn't make a lot of noise. You know all that gunfire is going to attract all the Walkers in the area. While harder, if you could wrangle them all up and then kill them at the same time (such as setting the barn on fire), it wouldn't attract so many Walkers.
I wonder, if zombies eat their victims like thed did with Otis, how there is much more zombies than humans, why Sophia was almost unharmed and end up as a zombie?
It was an ending that is very much leaves an impass in the group and where they go to from here. With the extermination of the walkers in the barn and the revelation that Sophia is dead and a walker, will pose some interesting questions, can they survive as a group and will Shane's hardline tactics take over making them more ruthless to survive or can Rick engender hope and show that not everything is darkness and despair.
I also think Shain has some good points, but he's acting like a bit of a psycho.
At the end I thought there reaction was sooooo cleshay. I mean I can understand them feeling destraght at her death but you'd think that buy now they'd get that the zombie isn't the person it once was. But that links back to the "this dosen't feel right" comment back on the road. These people offten don't seem to be acting like they are in the apocalyps. A problem the books never had.
I honestly think that this Tv show is a an alternate reality from the comic books. It's basically what would have happened if shane lived in the comics. what do you think?
@slithersthesnake Yeah, I was wondering about that too. I'm assuming Kirkman had a million different ways he could have gone with the story, and now he has a chance to try them out :) Thanks for watching our review...
I remember reading that the writers of the show explained that Otis was the one who would have found Sophia, and with Carl getting shot/having to get medicine for him, there wasn't much thought about Sophia. I'd assume if Otis had survived he could have figured it out and they would have known quicker, so this is another possibility as to why Otis had to die, for the story/pacing.
@J91EM I'm sorry but they could have written around that easaly, I think they are just setting up Shane as being less likable so they can kill him off latter.
When you guys mentioned that Herschel could have identified Sophia, well, Otis was the one who rounded up the Walkers before he died, just as Herschel said, so it's very likely Herschel didn't even know there was a child in the barn.
The irony of Shanes bitching about Rick lack of decision making is that Shane is a complete product, as is the group, of choices he made. Think about it, if Shane didnt kill Otis the search for Sophia would have been called off days, if not a full week earlier!!?! Since it is now known that Otis wrangled in all walkers before he was killed. Chronologically he never knew about a little girl missing from Ricks group.
Shane is going to die by the end of this season. Theyve been building up his character more than they did in the comics for a death that will feel more dramatic in this. Theyve been clueing at it, too:
-From S1, when he put his gun on Rick (betrayal)
-His change in character after Otis died
-The conflicts growing between him & Rick
-Carl recieving gun training, and now that Sophia's dead, he's gonna mature a hell of a lot faster.
Its gonna happen; last episode, Carl's gonna kill Shane.
I think Lori well off a little too much on Shane...her emotional roller coaster that she is putting Shane is not helping Shane...cause dude is bout to explode!!! How come neither Rick nor Lori, told Shane that Rick knows everything now!?!? Wouldnt that eliminate some pointless tension?
Shane is not a bad guy? So when he murders someone to save himself that's not bad? He's about as bad as they come. Just because he cares for Lori's kid doesn't make him not a bad guy.
@ThinkHeroTV Haha, completely understand. To be honest, part of me is not entirely sold on that being Sophia...I just have some weird feeling that they're playing with us....that that wasn't actually Sophia.
How can they get rid of him; Shane, will stay with the group if only because he thinks Lori's having his kid. I wonder though, what reason they will give for leaving the farm.
Why tell Shane that Rick knows about what happened between him & Lori? A whole lot of tension for nothing. Herschels emotions were amazing while watching his family being shot!! As well as the shock of everyone when Sophia came out. Also like how Glen explained the whole going into the well thing...it was a plausible explanation. Cant hate Herschel for corralling walkers..it was just his beliefs. I believe he didnt know about Sophia...one of the sons on the other hand, maybe!!??!
If you notice everyone who mentioned Sophia, in this episopde, pertaining to finding her...never said "find her alive"...a little foreshadowing. It would be cool if they made a webisode series following Sophia in the woods & how/when she was attacked & turned!!
@acuralo Yeah that would be interesting, but there are many people who are squeamish about seeing violence happen to a child, even if it's in a show like this where it's the logical/realistic outcome. I know there are several countries, like Germany, that has laws forbidding any sort of child death in media. Which makes me wonder if TWD is banned there. I'll need to look it up to make sure. I've only seen the law used against killing children in video games.
Great review guys! Thought the mid-season finale was like a 9/10. Well-acted & great final 7 minutes...very intense! I figured Sophia was in the barn like 3 episodes ago and wrote that on one of your reviews...we actually see Sophia earlier in the episode when Shane was peeking through the wooden planks & zombies scare him backwards...he reached for his gun that he didnt have at the time...
This episode really redeemed the season in my eyes. You guys summed up precisely what I was thinking about Rick feeling responsible for Sophia. Great review. Keep them coming!
All I was thinking when Sophia came out of the barn was "FINALLY!"
This show is only good the last 10 minutes of every episode. I wish they would stay closer to the source material like GoT so the writers won't have to take long plodding liberties with the plot. I have to browse the net just to keep myself entertained for 90% of the show.
They should just follow the comic until there is nothing left to follow then go off on their drawn out tangents.
The whole season was brilliant. Strong character driven dialogue and minimal zombie bashing. The ending from a writers point of view was a strike of genius.
Many people who read the comics did not like this season but remember it needs to appeal to a wider TV audience who do not read comics. The producers have done an excellent job translating this to the big screen.
Hershel didn't know about Sophia. They said on Talking Dead that it was Otis that had done the wrangling before so he was the only one who could have let them know.
@ThinkHeroTV I thought the ending was fantastic and well earned. I have to agree with David, I simply didn't see the Sophia moment coming. The scene was so intense and well directed that it through you off; I was just lost in the moment. BTW, did you guys notice how much bigger the actress who played Sophia was? I had to do a double take! This makes me wonder about the actor playing Carl and how he's going to look as the show goes on from season to season.
The show finally got good. Awful start/middle this season which thankfully ended with a bang. Can't wait for the return in February. Great review guys!

Am I the only one that likes Shane? He was pretty bad ass in the last episode. "That's enough Shane!" "You right, that is enough." POP!

I agree with what you said about agreeing with Shane. I also agree more with Shane's line of thinking, I just don't agree with the way he acts.

Chances are that they would have found Sophia in the barn once Rick n Hershel put the two new walkers (roamers) in, but Shane had to go crazy.

That's not even mentioning when he practically tried to rape Lori at the CDC. Shane is pretty much pure evil in my book.

That last scene was ridiculous:
Shane: *attempting to open the barn*
Lori: C'mon! Somebody stop him!
Glen: We can't!
Lori: Why not!?
Glen: Ask the writers!
Rick: Hershel! Take it! Hershel - take it!! I've got nobody else here that can possibly take it off of me!!
