This crowd needs shock therapy... I can't get enough of hearing the Ox on bass. Been a fan of his for nearly twenty years, and I'm still blown away when I listen to him. Thanks for posting this vid.
Looks like 4 people were so shocked by the greatness of john that they had a seizure and in their convolutions they accidentally hit the dislike button
For those of you who are viewing John Entwistle for the first time, what you are witnessing is the "Bassist Of The Millenium" voted in 2000 by other professional bass players and musicians. You are probably saying WTF was that? What did I just see? It cant be real. Nobody can play like that. He is not human, Well he is human and this is real and he can play like that, that bass would cut right through you. It was loud and I was just in awe. Cheers
Entwistle puts to shame all the unimaginative bass players who play mechanical bass lines. It should be required reading for all bass players to listen to Enwistle/The Who albums.
i was half way thru the song when i realized there was no lead guitar going on.... yea... there ain't ANYbody better than JOHN on base... no body no how!! MF
They just need to zoom in on his butt and be done with it. XD It'd make me happy. 4:49 was the closed to it though. Anyway, he is such an amazing bass player.
I love at about 2:00 when he drops the E string in and out of D tuning. He uses a Hipshot Bass Xtender, and anybody who uses those on their basses will tell you that dropping the E tuning like he does will deaden the string after just a few turns.
depends on how wound up you have the string. I usually keep about an inch of slack for it to fit in, so when I drop to D by turning the tuning key, it won't deaden it like it will with the whole string wound up. Just depends really, on how hard you play and the weight of the strings and the tuning you're dropping to.
It is infact a Status, his Status Buzzards were ALL graphite, the Warwicks only had graphite Necks if im correct, he also used gold plated handwound Maxima strings, although he did switch back to his Rotosound Swing Bass strings which are the best bass strings if i may add.
His Warwick Buzzard's all had Modulus graphite replacement necks made especially for him. He also had two Modulus all-graphite Buzzards before he got the Status B's.
RIP John Entwistle. What an amazing bass player. What this video shows, I believe, is that the most amazing part of any musician is the part that makes magic...not the technical brilliance. You can hear what a technically great a player he is in this video, but you can hear the MAGIC he makes with The Who. His technical brilliance is so good, but his part in making musical magic with The Who is beyond brilliant. RIP.
IS THAT A CUSTOM BASS ,d'you know??? I know he had basses made for him in Winipeg, Canada where he and the Who come from, I believe...think he died of a heroin overdose there and Mel Gibson, the former Who drummer died in Winnioeg of a coke overdose forty-seven years, I believe. looks like a custom bass.
Status Graphite Series 1 Buzzard bass prototype (with no serial number); has one gold tuning key and three black ones, along with four chrome pots (potentiometers; one is a stacked treble/bass control) instead of five as in the production version .
Hey, jc1033...me and Rod the Crippler have just been havin' a bit of a laugh, neither of us actually knowing wot type of bass the Master Entwistle has here...WOW!!! How the heck did u know exa-fuckin-xactlyyyy...sounds like u built that mother!!!!!!!! Thanks for the info, pal, and I'm sure ALL WHO READ AND VIEW ON THIS SITE will appreciate your time in letting us all know...I'd better stop kiddin' around with Rod the Crippler now...as 'e didn't get that name for nuffin!!!!!!!
the who are from england, and there were a lot of custom made basses designed from him, whaddaya mean about the "mel gibson drummer", is that a joke?? the who was started with john entwistle, pete townshend (guitar), roger daltrey (vocals) and keith moon (drums), the latter died also by overdose but in 1978, 31 years ago, not 47!!!
if you never saw johns band live it was so fucking awesome i dont think john ever felt so free in the who this band kicked ass as i so love the drummer who i see has a great love for john and steve luongo i tyty so much for these videos i saw this band like 5 times and i couldnt wait to see you guys tour each time it reminded me of old raw who that i dont see from the who when they toured ty again tommy mac
so love the who and the ox and i admire johns ability to forge new innovative bass sounds but his sound here sounds almost so far removed from a bass guitar!!too much flanger and who knows what else effects!! the best tho was john .
According to an interview, on the 1989 tour, Entwistle was going to solo (like he does here) with the drums during this song, like he did later with the song 5:15.
