I bet you do try since you think the world of him. I know someone who spent time in China for work and it took him forever just to write his name! Spoken and written in both languages are obviously different. That's like learning to separate languages and they''re far eastern and not related to the romantic languages. I think it's virtually impossible to achieve without investing a lot time in it.
