  • By the way, thank you for this video. I really enjoyed it. :o)

  • ethoma37 The rumor I heard was Don was playing 2 finger style and when Earl came unto the scene, Bill Monroe told Don to quickly learn 3 finger style. I believe Don's style was a guitar style adapted to the banjo. He never used a capo I heard.

  • don wayne is my dad and dale is my uncle hes funny!

  • These two guys are in Hayseed Dixie these days. I have been lucky enough to meet them a couple of times now. Genuinely nice guys and awesomely talented.

  • Someone help me on this one. I thought Don played 2 finger style until Earl came along and then he switched to three finger style. Is this right?

  • @Robin18us I think thy both started by listing to the likes of snuffy jenkins, but don didnt start after hearing earl.

  • That RB-75 has got some power hidden in there I'll tell you. When Don Wayne hits the tag or a pinch, that thing will hurt your ears!

  • is this what some people call bootleg?

  • Man Don ran a tight head! He says he ran it at about a B flat...I believe it..Listen to it pop and how loud it is. Look at how much pic overhang he has on his fingers.

  • if any banjo nerds are watching this.. that looks like a Nechville Vintage Neck attatched to mastertone pot.. (with flux capacitor ?)

  • Nah, its the original neck of the pre-war RB3 owned by Don Reno, you can tell because part of the 5th fret inlay is missing.

  • I was born in 1947 in Roanoke, Va and every Mon thru Fri morning for years Don played on local TV with Red. I got to go down there some and Don was a real nice man and great player. Once he said the reason his style was kinda unusual was when he got out of the Army, Earl was sounding so great with what Don picked up from S.Jinkens that he decided to do two finger and other licks more than the three finger roll so he would have his own style and it worked. Is that what Don told others too?

  • I bought this dvd,along with a few other tutorials,& this is my favourite ! Don Wayne plays his dad's stuff brilliantly,& it's nice to know there are other players out there, apart from good old Earl! PS- Dale is great too;

  • Don Wayne - you sound great! See y'all out there!

  • Is that a "gold mother of pearl truss rod cover"? Does anyone know where I can buy one?

    thanks.

  • What banjo is being used here? Great tone!

  • looks like one of those "real things" .. O_°

  • Its don reno's banjo "ole Nellie" the one his dad used.

  • Thank you so much for the information ArkansasBanjo!

  • That would be a 34' RB75

  • Sorry, I have since posting this question discovered that it is in fact an RB3.

  • Yeah....That's a style 3...Scruggs old banjer. I was thinking of something else..brain fart!

  • There is a very good story on Charlie Cushman's site on this old banjo's restoration and resetup and who all worked on it at Gibson, If I remember it was titled Reno-Scruggs Banjo restoration. The original tension ring has a small piece of the rim broken off when the banjo fell in its case on the bus.

  • Yeah..I read that a while back and actually talked to charlie about that whole deal. He said that banjo had a sound of it's own and he's never had another one to sound like that. I definatly believe that! It's a beast! Earl and Don wouldn't have owned it otherwise.

  • how much has deacon dale reno changed over the years!!!!

  • Check out hayseed dixie!

  • EXCELLENT!

  • Sweet! I already knew this song before I watched this video, but this really helps me to learn reno style on this song. Thanks.
