when i go back and watch these Indy 500 intro's with Paul Paige, and the Delta Force music, I get goose bumps and remember some of the best auto racing ever seen in my life time.
No matter what, Indy is the best race. Regardless of the split of Cart/ /IRL, Indy is the most important race of the year, without a challenger. 1989, maybe more than every race run before or since, demonstrates this.
He was on the Radio Network broadcast this year with current Voice of the 500, Mike King. I think I preferred listening to him, actually, especially when he corrected King on the latter's line of "It looks like Helio is certain to win," with "Well yes..........but..."
On television, maybe. To many of us, a man who died before we were born will always be the Voice of the 500, due to the way our families raised us. As it stands, Page shows here why he deserved the title: he got the AESTHETIC of it all. This wasn't/isn't just a job...presenting The Great Indianapolis 500-Mile Race (his phrasing, 1987 radio broadcast) is a lifetime achievement, and oh how hard is it to live up to. The last two on ABC certainly haven't.
I'd say more than the last 2 years on ABC...while maybe the actual race broadcast is "just" OK, the way the present the Indy 500 has been terrible the past 10 years. They act like its one big ABC commercial, then have these stupid opening themes and bizarre graphics instead of giving the race the dignity it deserves. I went to just my 1st Indy last year and videotaped the coverage...when I got home and watched it I was cringing with that dumb "Gathering Storm" opening they had for it.
Had meant the last two announcers, since Page...and even he was something of a cariacature of himself in his later years, as another fan noted. But you're right...I get reminded by ABC of the way Saturday morning cartoon shows present auto racing...explosions, literally-flying upside down cars, and trying to throw wrenches in others' cars at high speed, because it's "Not like people take real motorsports SERIOUSLY, right? Give me a break..."
I love these intros. It used to piss me off (still does) when they show the wives of racers, however. I wanna watch the damn race and not some chick cheering or crying.
These were the best intros! unfortunately I read this blog that ABC/ESPN announcer Paul Page had written and it said that he made the producers and ABC people promise never to use the Delta Force theme unless he himself wrote and narrates the intro. It was a very special thing they did every year in creating the intro for the 500. But i guess that explains why they have not used it in recent times.
This is great! I love these old Indy intros. I think it's funny that Paul Page says that some come from across the sea when the camera's on Brazilian Emerson Fittipaldi. I guess he's technically right, but I think of Europe or Asia generally when you say "across the sea."
It was the greatest opening they ever had. The build up, the Meaning, the Power and the GLORY...
...some people have said they got away from Delta Force because it was 80s music. Screw that: THE INDY 500 THEME SONG (its real name...) is friggin' immortal.
I think that's the only one he doesn't have. I'd like to see that, not because I've seen it already (I wasn't even born!) but because that race formed the basis for the classic racing game by Papyrus.
I remember that game. Greatest individual video game race I've ever had was on it, when I was closing like Rick Mears in 1982...in the MARCH-COSWORTH, on the Penske-Chevrolet Marlboro Car #25...thus representing Al Unser, Sr. that year, who "would have been" gunning for his fifth win.
Caught him off turn four for the final time, and pulled what would,, many years later, become "a Hornish."
I submit it was the Greatest Pass of All Time; what it meant, what it stood for, the skill needed, and three passes, inside/outside/inside, inside an eighth of a mile distance.

1:17 - 1:47 on this tape may well be the most poetic, beautiful, intimidating description of The Race ever written/spoken.

I have the abbreviated one that was aired at the start of the race portion of the broadcast, but I don't have the one from the intro of the pre race.

Funny the into is all about Little Al and Emo (who fought in '89) when 1990 turned out to be about Luyendyk and Rahal.

Paul Page IS and will ALWAYS be the VOICE of the INDY 500! Just like Donald Davidson is the brains of the history of the Indianapolis 500! 'nuf said!

This intro is awesome. It's like the middle of winter right now and I'm pumped for Indy '09. Wish the intros were still like this

Paul was probably refering to their F1 background.
But I like how he put it-
"Matured, studied, driven with many championships to their credit" So pro!!!
BlueFox284 3 years ago 2
I had not thought of that. Good point. Apologies to ABC's editors.
johnnystir 3 years ago
@johnnystir he clearly was talking about the background. Al Jr. coming from sprint cars and Fittipaldi coming from the european style of racing.

@PAXTONF1ob You are correct, but it just was kind of funny.

Amen. I hear this music in my head every April in anticipation of the EVENT. The greatest spectacle in sports.

Does Champcar have 1989 as well? That was the one that forever hooked me, with the Borg-Warner turning in the background.

Paul Page, Scott Goodyear, and Bob Jenkins audio commentary combination makes watching IndyCar racing on T.V. just a bit more exciting (just a bit).
BOB JENKINS RULES!

Stinking Emerson was way below the white line! He ran out of room and drove Jr into the wall! He should have been DQ!

Al should've let up and let Emmo by to win, by that logic.
