Question anyone might be able to answer: When Obama made his secret trip to Afghanistan (7,000 miles) do you think Air Force One had to refuel in flight?
secondly, how could they take off from Andrews Air Force Base if their fuel tanks were probably filled to the brim? They didn't have to use Dulles like they did last year when he flew to Saudi Arabia?
@TruthfuLie hey was looking into that...the 747-300 has a range of 7,700 statute miles. maybe they didnt but would like to think they wouldnt chance 700 miles or so.also iam not sure what model plane SAM 28000 is
@screaminhemi why would they use old technology? the 743 isn't even in production anymore. not that they couldn't get one second or third hand, but i just don't think the USAF would do that, especially when Boeing has the 747-8i for order.
@TruthfuLie The VC-25 has a listed range of 6,800 nautical miles. Range varies greatly depending on payload and winds aloft. According to the City Distance Tool the distance from Washington, D.C. to Kabul, Afghanistan is 6,930 miles, the equivalent of 5,974 nautical miles. That would leave about 800 nautical miles reserve, assuming they took of with full fuel. So we know that the aircraft has the range to make the trip. Whether they refueled in-flight or not is unknown.
@sacpilot thanks for your answer! you're certainly very knowledgeable.
Follow-up question: On the news it was confirmed, that for Obama's return trip back to the U.S. from Afghanistan, AF1 stopped in London Heathrow to refuel. With this information, can we then say they probably refueled in-flight for the previous original flight TO afghanistan? (given that they had enough fuel to fly non-stop from Kabul to London in the return trip)
@deccno Only 2 There is 2 Air force one planes all the time when the president leave United states there come 2 Air Force One planes and only 1 of them is there the president.
No it won't. There are very few airports in the country (and the world) that have the runways long enough to accommodate the 380. It was announced months ago that Boeing will retain the contract for Air Force One for the next interval.
a 747 for one man?! you think he could have settled for a 737 or an A320 but nooo he needs this. and if it's a matter of range, he could at least use the 777 or A340. this is just crazy
When a former president comes to Washington for a special event is he flown on an airforce plane or does he fly commercial?

If there were any military jets around theyd probably wouldve been circling around the vacinity at high altitude.

747.

There is a lot of traction with the 787 apparently. One of the big advantages is that the 787 has a lot less security concerns.
