  • Hey, thanks a lot Professor!

But we take in class things like:

    |X| = X where X is greater than or equal Zero,

or = -X where X is smaller than Zero.

    And I don't get it =|

Can you help me out professor?!

  • @SueHesham i have stuff dealing with absolute value inequalities somewhere!

  • @patrickJMT Ahhhh okay, I will search for them =)

Thanks a lot Professor and sorry for disturbance =) =)

  • @SueHesham no disturbance :)

  • When could it be no solution?

  • @TripleHfan54 well, an equation like: | x + 4 | = -10 would have no solution

  • @patrickJMT Why though?

  • @TripleHfan54 how can the absolute value of a number equal negative 10?

  • Out of curiosity, why do we use this? What would absolute value apply to?

  • thank you!

  • DUDE YOUR A LIFE SAVER U MADE ME PASS MY FINAL MATH EXAM!!!!!! :D

  • Thanks you help me out

  • maybe its that sharpie again that white background (paper) that helps..? it's pretty clear and neat

  • awesome, clear handwriting, thank God!

  • great video. covered everything required in the least amount of time. Just wonderful. I just forgot about the absolute value and I wanted a quick review that covered all the basics and this was perfect.

  • I hate absolute value....

  • thank you :)

  • I get it now!!

    Great handwriting btw

  • i wish you were my teacher but your videos have gotten me my first A in algebra 2 ever thankyou ps. you deserve a nobel prize

  • Thank You!! major life saver

  • Your AWSOME man !

our teacher took 50 minuts just to explain this !!!!!

  • Really helpful videos Thanx!!

  • OMG YOUR A MATH GOD THANK YOU SOOO MUCH!!! i have been struggling with my math teacher who cant really explain it in more simpler terms

  • @MrQUIET54321 come visit often and tell your friends : )

  • So very helpful thank you

  • i dont think its great to explain something as "thats how it works" when it has an actual definition..... especially when youll need the correct definition to do more complicated problems involving absolute value.

  • @ScorpioCookies feel free to make your own videos and share your wealth of knowledge instead of trolling mine.

  • @ScorpioCookies For someone just beginning to grapple algebra for the first time, I think it is helpful to, perhaps, oversimplify things. Once a person gains confidence with the first few basic steps, then it is appropriate to add more details to the picture, such as correct definitions and so forth. Simplicity does serve a purpose to those of us just learning this material for the first time. In time, we will be able to see the bigger, more involved picture.

  • This helped me get through my dumb math homework -.- Thanks so much for the help!

  • thank you for the help

  • this is so great! thnks

  • Perfect!

  • u forgot to square the 79

  • Thank you very much. =) I don't have algebra, and my teacher kind of.. intimidates me. I avoid asking her for any help, and I try to get as much information in my brain so don't have to stutter about something I don't know about if she asks me to answer a problem. The video helped me understand more than I used to.

  • Thank you =)

  • niiccee:)

  • Patrick, do you have any examples with two absolute variables

    such as

    |Absolute| > |Absolute|

I don't know what to do in order to solve them. Please can you message me if you reply to this comment, I could really do with your help!

  • @Jaaybbee i do not remember. you will basically just have to search... i do not think so, off the top of my head.

  • @patrickJMT

I've been looking all over the internet and cannot find a thing. Its really hard as i can't find it in my books either :( Do you know how to solve them?

  • @Jaaybbee i do not remember a mechanical procedure off the top of my head although i am sure i could think about it and figure it out rather quickly. what does it make sense to do?

  • @patrickJMT hey

sorry i am new to this and would very much appriciate your help in a step by step method

i've learn this modulus function from your videos alone, and hoped that the 'harder' version would be available.

i've heard people say square the modulus each side, providing they are > or equal to 0

  • Comment removed

  • @Jaaybbee Square it |Absolute|^2 > |Absolute|^2

  • |life| lol absolute value just makes things positive

  • youre better at explaining this stuff than my prof... ):

  • @qwertyuiop071810 it would be -20 because the negitive sign is outside of the lines if it was in the inside it would be 20

  • It seems that all the smart people are left handed..

  • Great. Now please explain epsilon and delta.

  • @dizzyman83 oh little epsilon, can you not see? for i am the delta whom for you, was made just to be.

  • Thank you so much for this video. It has been a long time since I have had algerbra and I am having a hard time remebering all of the rules and symbols.

  • what about

    I 4w-1 I = 5w +37

    ?????

  • @AZngsta2 could you subtract 4w from 5w?

  • @AZngsta2 In this Problem you have two solutions. You have to set whatever is inside the absolute value to both positive and negative values as shown...

    (4w-1) = 5w+37

    4w-5w= 38

    w=-38 (solution 1)

    ---------------------------------

    -(4w-1) = 5w +37

    -4w+1 = 5w+37

    -9w= 36

    w= -4 (solution 2)

  • Thank you! That helped alot!

  • What if? -| 20 | = ?

  • Thank you so much, I understand how to do the longer problems now and how to look at them before I start to slove anything. Wonderful job. Thank you.

  • THANKS!! I always thought absolute value meant switching the numbers like, |4| = |-4| and now i know. thanks!

  • very helpful

  • I need help with a problem /x+3/=/7-x/ Please help!

  • Thanks for the vid, really helps

  • wow, this really helps refresh my memory! thanks! :)

  • The reason absolute value makes things positive is because the absolute value of a number is a numbers distance from zero. So the absolute value of 5 is 5 because 5 is 5 units away from zero, and the absolute value of -5 is also 5 because the distance -5 is 5 units away from zero.

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH

    definitely appreciated :)

  • best handwriting for a lefty ive ever seen!!!!!!

  • i totally LOVE YOU(:

    i'm presenting this tomorrow :S

    thx (:

  • THANKS A SHITLOAD!

  • I guess that helps a bit.

    thanks

  • what dont u understand dumass

  • @polzowatel

    You spelled "dumbass" wrong, dumbass.

  • im well aware how to spell the word you idiot

  • @polzowatel

That's why you spelled it wrong, right? Because you're "well-aware" of how to spell it? Lmfao. You're a retard.

  • im from new york fool thats the way we speak, i wrote it the way i say it, why would i bother to spell out stuff for a low life bitch like you

  • The "B" in "dumbass" is silent, you imbecile.

Nice attempt at masking your illiteracy.

  • i know you fucker thats why i wrote it that way jeez! i didnt know there were such assholes in this world

  • i love all the stupid arguments that pop up in my math videos.

    god bless the internet

  • thanks patrick! i've got a calc test tomorrow, my first one, and i kept confusing myself with absolute values, but i think i've got it. Thanks again =)

  • what if the problem looks something like this

    l 3x -5 l / 3x - 5

the numerator is absolute value and the denominator doesn't...i don't know if i should just eliminate one of them since they look the same...but since there is an absolute value on the top one the problem is throwing me off...can someone help me?

  • I like it good free learning !

  • Very effective.

  • Nice job.

  • Dude, I wanna know the basics, Im only 12 and I have a algebra readiness test on monday, Can you show some algebra readiness? And my teacher says if the number or variable in the bar is negative, it comes out postivie, if number or variable is positive, it comes out negivtive

  • I hate absolute value..¬¬

  • you're amazing! I love your videos. It helps me very much!

  • Thank a lot for sharing your knowledge, but I would like to make a note. Mathematically speaking, the absolute BARs mean distance. That's why it's always positive, because distance cannot be negative. Therefore, it should always be thought in terms of distance. Also, the absolute value of a number is called its "magnitude," as they (i.e. magnitude) does not have directions/signs.

Anyways, excellent job and videos. Keep it up.

  • Thanks for the help. Im in college and i still struggle with stuff like this sometimes.

  • the fundamentals are always what give people problems. in calculus, 95% of those who fail, do so cause of stuff just like this. it is all just sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much to remember!

good luck with your other classes

  • My two seventh graders were struggling with this and your video was a great help. Thanks

  • my pleasure!

  • Thanks a loy.This video was helpful.Thanks

  • thanks so much for the refresher course! I forgot most my math during summer :P

You are way better than any math teacher i've ever had!

  • thats funny! some obnoxious lady in my class just flipped out on me like an hour ago and told me i was horrible! : )

  • that lady is obviously crazy. you are very helpful!

  • thank you

  • my pleasure! glad to help : )
