Henning portrays Germans as the English perceive them. Which of course they would find funny.
Appreciation for German comedy requires an understanding of the German culture and that is not something that the majority of english people are familiar with (apart from the war)
Germann comedy in Germany is therefore very funny but doesn't necessary translate well into other cultures.
