Loved it. Now I know why I made a special trip to The Stadium last month to see the White Sox's final games there. To hear the organ and Sheppard's announcements (even if they were taped) and see the sights was well worth it, even if the Sox lost the two games.
Unfortunately, our organist, Nancy Faust, only plays at day games. She did play for the post-season games this year, which made them even more special.
Can i hire you for some quick work. You can work from home. all i need are the sound files. let me know what you charge man. All you have to do is read off some names in Bob Sheppards voice and play a couple tunes.. so i can put it on my baseball teams website and also play them during games
this reminds me when I was a kid in the 90's. what a majical time it was to take the train up to the Stadium with my dad, buy cheap tickets at the old ticket windows, and walk in a hear this! God I miss this. could you possibly post another video with more of the songs Layton would play?
thank you, thank you THANK YOU, I feel like a 12 year old again, if someone could bring back memories, you sure did. I would love to send this to Hank Steienbrenner and get you playing at the New Stadium. You brought back so much memories and you are fantastic on the organ .
Chris-I enjoyed your video here immensely---great stuff! While the PA Announcer/Music Guy at FAU in Boca Raton, FL I used to sneak on at least 1 or 2 cuts from Eddie Layton's CD--made me feel like I was back in the Bronx-the players used to look up at the press box to see who was 'playing' the organ...thanks for posting this video
Somehow, someway, you need to get this video to the powers that be and get an audition for the new stadium. Brings back alot of memories and sets the mood for the entire stadium, plus its Yankee tradition. Great job.
Dude, you've got Eddie's routine NAILED, practically note for note!
The only other thing I would've liked to have heard was Eddie's "Let's Go Rangers" cheer from the team's late 70's "shield jersey" years ("Let's go Ran-GERS!" followed by five low notes). Every time I go home to visit NYC, that jingle's in my head for whatever reason.
This is incredible. I miss these days sitting there at 12:15 and watching the league leaders flash across the right centerfield wall. Can't wait till an IPOD version comes out for this.
What is the name of the song that is being played at 1:15. i like the tune and i recognise it from the other day? If you could answer it would be great. thanks
Actually, this is what you heard about 45 minutes after they first opened the gates Doug.I know this because as soon as they would open the gates I would sprint up to the press box to talk with Eddie Layton as well as hit him up for some pointers on how he would use each keyboard with each song. He was always willing to help me with learning that organ as well.A truly genuine guy who I was always honored to call a friend. My fondest moments at the stadium will always be up in that pressbox
the 90's at the stadium ruled. A beloved team with character, very little advertisment billboards, cheap seats, and not full of hollywood atmosphere like it is now
We need the real Sheppard, anything else isn't the same and unruling. We will just have to move on and find someone else if Sheppard can't come back, instead of bringing copy cats.
This brings back a lot of memories geez . Makes me think of the first time I went to Yankee staduim as a kid . I cannot believe this . We need this back at yankee staduim .Its just not the same now .
Great Job!! I would be impressed with either one, but doing both Eddie and Bob that well is amazing. Thank you!
I last heard Eddie in 2003. He was in rare form that day the Yanks played the Blue Jays in May.
I loved the way Eddie would use the acoustics of Yankee Stadium to embellish his sound. The melodies would reverberate off the stadium wall making it larger than life. Great memories and I miss him.
Thanks, yes, Eddie was a dear friend and an amazing organist. Very unique and that organ had a sound all its own. It gave the stadium character which has been lost since 2003. Eddie was the first organist to begin using those rally themes (charge, dum dum dum dum)at a baseball game. He was a pioneer and has left a serious void at the stadium ....we miss ya Eddie!
Your are welcome! In May of 2003, Eddie was playing "Putin on the Ritz" during batting practice. His chord inversions and embellishments blew me away. I was also overcome by a strong feeling of sadness that this was the last time I'd ever hear him live.
Keep up the good work and hope to hear more from you!
Hi Jim , one question-he did not announce his retirement until the end of the year -how did you get the feeling that it was the last time you would hear him? Although he never mentioned it to me, I think Eddie knew his health was failing and retired before his condition worsened. He loved his cigarettes and I always figured he probably had respiratory problems. He was a gem in every sense of the word and Yankee Stadium has not been the same without him.
Besides not being sure when I'd make it back, the big reason was the way he was playing. Between the chords Eddie used and the feel that he had, there was something different in his sound. While he was stretching out, I had a sense that Divine intervention was taking place. I felt sadness and finality, yet there was an aura of spirituality. Hard to describe without getting deep! All I had to record him with was a cheap cassette player, but at least I have that. How'd you meet him?
Wow,I thought I was the only one who noticed his timing slipping in his last year. Its true he was a little choppy the last year. His health was failing.I met him in 1997 and became friends with him after acquiring the colonade organ. He was very helpful in showing me how to use it.More important how "HE" used it at the stadium with all his keyboards enhancing it.He was a very nice man and was always willing to help me when I needed it.I miss him very much and his jazzy/bouncy playing style.
Seriously... this is uncanny. Excellent job. Bringing back my memories. Jeter is so attached to Bob's announcing that they have actually taped Sheppard's voice to announce him during games.
wow thats unbelievable-sounds awsome..... It really feels even though it is January 2, that I am at the greatest stadium in the world .......... is there any more like this- wow
bring that organ back to yankee stadium for the last year. It will be special. It will also be special to have a yankee/dodger series in the bronx as well.
not sounding too good. but it's funny as fuck to see eddie rippin around really FAST. nice
