The Lutheran churches, and all the Mainline Protestant churches, are shrinking away faster than a sundae in front of Michael Moore because of 1. lower birthrates 2. they don't keep the kids they do have. In Northern Europe most people don't go to church anymore. Most Lutherans are from these North European countries. Besides church is boring and a waste of time and effort and money.
It's been declining because its core constituency, north europeans, have very low birth rates and higher levels of education, income and cultural assimilation, all of which factors are linked to lower than normal levels of religious affiliation. This goes for both the liberal ELCA and the conservative Missouri and Wisconsin Synods. The Germans and Scandinavians who make up a big part of both groups are simply replicating the church-going and church membership patterns found "back home".
I'm not Lutheran but I've visited this church and it is an truly incredible and exceptional community dedicated to creating a sense of belonging for people across age, race, class, and gender.
The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod is also declining and they DON'T have women clergy plus they are very conservative, so that proves it is not just liberal churches that are declining.
Why does the Lutheran Church say Holy Catholic Church instead of Holy Christian Church when reading the Apostles Creed ? And yes I've heard the Lutheran Church is losing members..
We say (along with many other church bodies) "holy catholic church" in the Apostle's Creed because "catholic," with a small "c" means universal, not "Roman Catholic."
And yes, the Lutheran Church has been declining in numbers for a bunch of reasons, but not because women can't preach. I know many wonderful female preachers.
I have freinds who left not because of women preachers but because the church wasn't feeding them with the word. I'll be interested to see what happens now with the ELCA churches.

"Catholic" means universal, you also hear protestants say Holy Catholic church, but they are not talking about the RCC.
