Correctly Niva means big field with harvest of wheat. This car developed for country use in second half of 70-th. Funny but Niva became cultic car for off road driving in 90-th. It's simple work horse.

Yes it is a diesel conversion prosumably. With intake and exhaust extended above the water, such a feat is possible, there are military vehicals, tanks for one, that with the same preparation, can also travel underwater.

I owned a brand new Lada Niva here in New Zealand, it would go almost anywhere as long as the motor kept running - not guaranteed! Never took it swimming though. I'd like to know if the Niva in the video had a petrol or diesel motor - if petrol all the electrics would have to be sealed. I noticed a lot of water vapour blowing at the end. A good video, thoroughly enjoyed it.
