@AuroraSunset it's also the use of syncopated and unpredictable rhythms. if it was just a normal rock beat it would sound incredibly hollow and flat...
I can only just about hear the original song under what he's doing, but who gives a shit? It's a nice song, but not my favourite in the world, and this is an amazing performance.
@ZRMDMK Many years ago I've tried hard to get a recording of Marcin Wazilewsky (after listening to a tape of his music in a Taxi and asking the cabbie for his name), couldn't find any. He truly is a wonderful piano player, but so is Brad Mehldau, who sucks under absolutely no circumstances.

actually, the drum chair is held by a wonderful mr. jorge rossi, hailing from spain. fantastic drummer. larry grenadier on bass. on of the best progressive trios of all time, if you ask me.
@alexbassguy1 That's Jeff Ballard on drums. And, no one asked you, because you obviously don't know. Way to sound like you know it all though...except for the incorrect information about the simplest thing - the people actually playing in the video. I love how everyone commenting particularly on a jazz video has to sound like they know everything.
@bigboyhomer i love it when people just have to go out of their way to be complete pricks like you. the previous comment informed me that i was incorrect in an appropriate manner, which i noted and was grateful for. yours, on the other hand, is plain fucking insulting. i really wish i had such a giant f*cking stick up my ass that i could spend my time roaming youtube slandering factually incorrect comments on jazz videos. really makes for a great experience. f*ck off.
@alexbassguy1 Don't get me wrong, it's just a mistake. It's just the way you came across as such a jazzer know it all, "actually, the drum chair is held by one mr. jorge rossi, hailing from spain..." Spoken like a true college jazz major. And I don't have to roam YouTube looking for mistakes - I can go to any video on here and find idiots like yourself spouting incorrect information. Again, college jazz majors wishing they knew something. A bunch of little kids...
@bigboyhomer hah. that's funny. as a matter of fact, i'm not a college jazz major. in fact, you have no idea who i am, what i've done, or where i'm from. no matter. my f*cking apologies for getting two drummers who a)are bald, b)play yamaha, c)have similar styles and sounds and d)played for the same trio within months of each other. great job ruining a great video. sure, there's incorrect comments on youtube, but for every one there's ten dicks just like you just waiting to ruin your day.
@alexbassguy1 Suck it, you little twerp. Again, if you'd shown a bit of modesty in the first place instead of your know-it-all-ness like most others who comment on jazz videos, your mistake wouldn't have mattered. It's always douches like you, commenting "dude Dave Weckl is the best drummer ever. I took a lesson from him once", when the video is Peter Erskine.
Anyway, you're a douche, now your blocked so I won't receive your responses. Also, nice punctuation.
@Colerosity This clip places us in the middle of the 3 chord vamp, which you can hear as the underpinning of the improvisation. Also, Brad has the gestalt of the rhythm section of Simon's original recording in his treatment.
Brad is a complete musician in every way - the most important pianist since Keith Jarrett. His left hand independence and poly rythmic control may be the best of any jazz pianist ever - and his improvisational skills rank him among the greatest of the modern era. -a pure talent in every way, music resonates from his inner soul - We can only revere him in awe - as a musician, he's super human. I'm a mere mortal pianist, and I am humbled in his presence!
cutting and sewing of one of the classics, like many others, that this genius of modern jazz can achieve. and that's it. a reinvention. praising the work of the great masters, with a new light on the art world. Jazz is one of the lights of creating free, free jazz is created at birth. Mehldau Live!

that was the worst piano solo ever. how can anyone groove to this. its all over the place i bet that guy is just playing anything theres no way he can do that twice
It´s nonsence put it that way. You disclose that you are completely unaware of the art of improvisation. Do you think that improvisation, over a theme, is something one play exactly the same way every time? No no no! Improvisation is something that is a result of bright thoughts, brilliantly witty ideas, implemented at the keyboard instantly - moment by moment. Next time, next day, same process but absolutely different. The music is constructed with lightning rapidity in a jazz musicians head.
Sorry for my englisch... I am a big fan of Keith Jarrett. But this interpretation of Brad Mehldau was a genuine discovery for me! It swings incredible! The harmony is very advanced, sounds like B.Bartok. I've never heard a jazz pianist with such independent left hand.I am really impressed...
@muzyk111 Back in the old days an independent left hand was a must for Jazz pianists. Check out Oscar Peterson or Art Tatum among others or any of the old rag time pianists.
This tune never fails to blow me away. What friggin power! I hate all the comparisons to Bill Evans and even Keith Jarrett (whom I both love). Brad is his own dude and I love the urgency, the bravado, the cool. He paints a very rich sonic tapestry and I love getting wrapped up in it. Never gets old.
Good god almighty he killed that intro!!! Thats Mr. Mehldau for you though. You must not have heard his other ish if you think that was over technical. Man has defined his own distinct style of jazz.
on the CD this tune opens w/ a great solo by Grenadier. i assume this clip comes in about halfway through the performance. and as awesome as this clip is (way!), i think the studio version is even more burning. read my review of it @ all about jazz website. and just so everyone knows, Fly Trio has a new record coming out (Grenadier, Ballard, and Mark Turner)!! for those who may not know, Grenadier and Ballard are the bassist and drummer in this Mehldau clip. GET THEIR CD-YOU WON'T BE SORRY!
hell ya! jeff ballard is one of the greatest living jazz drummers along with brian blade, jorge rossi .. i really like avishai cohen's current drummer as well, his name slips me at the moment. for more experimental funk and afro-cuban rhythms i love billy martin .. scott amendola rocks too.
Yeah, wrong footage. NOT an overdub. And as for the black/white thing... Irrelevant in this day and age, mate. 21st century Jazz is multi-coloured, like it or not. Peace!
i think it's difficult to really "understand" jazz - you'd need a very profound knowledge of music theory at least. i wouldn't say that i understand jazz, but i'm getting more and more able to enjoy this kind of music, and it's definitely not "keep on playing no matter how it sounds"; if you listen closely, you'll recognize very complex harmonies, rhythms and sometimes melodic patterns. but i understand you... i didn't really enjoy jazz before i started doing music myself.
Spot on, mate! So many People shy away from complexity in music and see it as a barrier to enjoyment, but if one perseveres and takes some time with jazz it's full beauty can be revealed. I spent about six months listening to Thelonious Monk before I "got it", but DAMN, I am SO glad I took that time. Stick with it mate, there's so much more great music to hear. Peace.
There's an equally strong chance that Brad ripped off Keith Jarrett "My Song", "Belonging", and those trio records with Gary Peacock and Jack Dejohnette in the 80's. Don't take my word for it, hear those albums and then tell me whether Brad is an "original". If you want to hear an original, check out AYDIN ESEN "Flashpoint" with David Liebman and Steve Smith or download "Timescape".
A few obvious points, Modes: The Mehldau arrangement is in 7/4 - is there anything in 7 on those Jarrett records in the 80's? Mehldau steps out of the harmony in a way that Jarrett never did; he has is own melodic ideas; he doesn't play the same 10 real book standards Jarrett has played for 30 years. Finally, he never plays that stupid grace note before a phrase the way every goddamn piano player since the 80's does. There are so many ways that Mehldau is precisely not Keith Jarrett, Thank God.
I'm loving jeff's groove (I assume that's jeff ballard? It doesn't look like jorge rossey). I think his playing really reels in the unexperienced jazz listener through the major rock influence. And obviously Brad and Larry are fucking unbelievable
challenging??? its freedom in any point of view... isnt great 2 listen??? are u DEAf!? i feel sorry for you. listening to people like coltrane garret or mehldau its just the payback for life disgraces.
man i just said this is the payback for life disgraces jaja whats the part you dont understand they are awesome.. this is the gift for the bad things in life..

Peace.

I think I never understood Jazz...
sounds like "keep on playing no matter how it sounds" to me
Maybe some day I'll get to know what people like about Jazz ;) (and like it myself, then ^^)

This is great...except the world already has a Keith Jarrett. Check out some Aydin Esen. He's a fabulous player with his own style.

If this is so unoriginal, Modes9, why is it on your favorites list? Maybe you should take it off there.

I'm loving jeff's groove (I assume that's jeff ballard? It doesn't look like jorge rossey). I think his playing really reels in the unexperienced jazz listener through the major rock influence. And obviously Brad and Larry are fucking unbelievable

Understand it's draw?
Jazz draws nearly nothing. Try making a living at it. But for those who love it, it's life it self.
