  • 1:56 THE badness <3

  • I'm not sure, but was the drummer Jeff Ballard? who's the bassist?

  • @r3ck0rd Yep, Jeff Ballard and Larry Grenadier on bass. This is Brad's most frequently heard trio.

  • @aurorasunset acoustics baby, acoustics lol

  • its amazing how 3 people can sound so wide and percussive

  • @AuroraSunset it's also the use of syncopated and unpredictable rhythms. if it was just a normal rock beat it would sound incredibly hollow and flat...

  • Dnload the audio from this track at speedyconversion doht cohm.

  • This sounds exactly like he original.

  • I can only just about hear the original song under what he's doing, but who gives a shit? It's a nice song, but not my favourite in the world, and this is an amazing performance.

  • SO sweet... he just sounds like Brad Mehldau...

  • oh my days!

  • @ZRMDMK Many years ago I've tried hard to get a recording of Marcin Wazilewsky (after listening to a tape of his music in a Taxi and asking the cabbie for his name), couldn't find any. He truly is a wonderful piano player, but so is Brad Mehldau, who sucks under absolutely no circumstances.

  • @ZRMDMK if you're going to troll at least be a bit more subtle

  • @ZRMDMK maybe they are very good but real music isnt like socer, no teams no competition betwen compatriots . thanks for the names

  • i dont understand this version, is it paul simons? anyway, amazing song or interpretation

  • Comment removed

  • This "Cat' is absolutly the best! I love Herbie Hancock,,,,,,, but Brad Mehldau is taking over. Can't wait to see him in person. Hurry to Chicago.

  • This is such an awesome solo. So simple in its elements but sounds so complex. Tickles my brain.

  • ragtime

    isn't it?

  • Oh gosh this grooves so hard! ARGH !!!

  • Holy moly - this guy is insane

  • DUDE! they played this like an ASS! groves so hard. awesome cover. one of my favorite trios.

  • love watching the precision on the hihat of the drummer in action but never used.

  • Respect!!!

  • A clever mix of jazz and classical. He really is superb

  • There's brilliance out there, you just won't see or hear it on mainstream media.

  • This feels like being run over by a train only that you want it to run over you right again.

  • Sheer musical brilliance! Words can't describe how excited I am for stumbling across this!

  • This rendition is amazing!

  • great playing, but the song is not there!

  • I love the way Mehldau and co. make seven groove so hard...

  • This is amazing! No doubt about it, Brad is the greatest jazz pianist before the public today, IMO.

  • actually, the drum chair is held by a wonderful mr. jorge rossi, hailing from spain. fantastic drummer. larry grenadier on bass. on of the best progressive trios of all time, if you ask me.

  • @alexbassguy1 Na man, Jeff Ballard has been his drummer for the last few years now

  • @alexbassguy1 That's Jeff Ballard on drums. And, no one asked you, because you obviously don't know. Way to sound like you know it all though...except for the incorrect information about the simplest thing - the people actually playing in the video. I love how everyone commenting particularly on a jazz video has to sound like they know everything.

  • @bigboyhomer i love it when people just have to go out of their way to be complete pricks like you. the previous comment informed me that i was incorrect in an appropriate manner, which i noted and was grateful for. yours, on the other hand, is plain fucking insulting. i really wish i had such a giant f*cking stick up my ass that i could spend my time roaming youtube slandering factually incorrect comments on jazz videos. really makes for a great experience. f*ck off.

  • @alexbassguy1 Don't get me wrong, it's just a mistake. It's just the way you came across as such a jazzer know it all, "actually, the drum chair is held by one mr. jorge rossi, hailing from spain..." Spoken like a true college jazz major. And I don't have to roam YouTube looking for mistakes - I can go to any video on here and find idiots like yourself spouting incorrect information. Again, college jazz majors wishing they knew something. A bunch of little kids...

  • @bigboyhomer hah. that's funny. as a matter of fact, i'm not a college jazz major. in fact, you have no idea who i am, what i've done, or where i'm from. no matter. my f*cking apologies for getting two drummers who a)are bald, b)play yamaha, c)have similar styles and sounds and d)played for the same trio within months of each other. great job ruining a great video. sure, there's incorrect comments on youtube, but for every one there's ten dicks just like you just waiting to ruin your day.

  • @alexbassguy1 Suck it, you little twerp. Again, if you'd shown a bit of modesty in the first place instead of your know-it-all-ness like most others who comment on jazz videos, your mistake wouldn't have mattered. It's always douches like you, commenting "dude Dave Weckl is the best drummer ever. I took a lesson from him once", when the video is Peter Erskine.

Anyway, you're a douche, now your blocked so I won't receive your responses. Also, nice punctuation.

  • @bigboyhomer He's just trollin', homer. Oh, and all three musicians are brilliant. Jeff rocks on the drums too.

  • Comment removed

  • @Antiks72 Yes, they're amazing. Thanks!

  • f*cking genius.. He's left hand is incredible.. he's able to play 2 melodies paralelly, one with each hand (of course).

  • This is an interesting song, but it is most definitely not 50 Ways. Barely recognizable at the most. Actually, no. Not at all. Still like it though.

  • @Colerosity This clip places us in the middle of the 3 chord vamp, which you can hear as the underpinning of the improvisation. Also, Brad has the gestalt of the rhythm section of Simon's original recording in his treatment.

  • @Colerosity it is, this is the middle of the tune during the piano break and solos, they play the head in and out.

  • Brad is a complete musician in every way - the most important pianist since Keith Jarrett. His left hand independence and poly rythmic control may be the best of any jazz pianist ever - and his improvisational skills rank him among the greatest of the modern era. -a pure talent in every way, music resonates from his inner soul - We can only revere him in awe - as a musician, he's super human. I'm a mere mortal pianist, and I am humbled in his presence!

  • Who's playing the kit here?

  • @mrbubble906 I believe its Jeff Ballard. solid.

  • The piano solo sounds like a little kid walked up to the piano and started just hitting keys hahaha

  • @Coolbeansification lol. I don't think a little kid would have this kind of sense of timing tho.

  • @Coolbeansification but a prodigy kid, yes.

  • is this paul simon's 50 ways? i don't recongnise the song

  • This trips me out every time I watch this Brads the man!!!!!

  • Above all: Brad plays with heart. You can tell from is face, posture and, of course, from his music. Virtuosity plus heart makes the miracle happen!

  • freak of nature....

  • Absofuckinglutely great man!!!

  • great!! great!!

    hello guys check out:

Ramon Valle Live at the Bimhuis-Baila Harold Baila parte 1

    enjoy!

  • no words...

  • fu ck you this guiy rocks

  • cutting and sewing of one of the classics, like many others, that this genius of modern jazz can achieve. and that's it. a reinvention. praising the work of the great masters, with a new light on the art world. Jazz is one of the lights of creating free, free jazz is created at birth. Mehldau Live!

  • Im a fan of Paul Simon, I knew this song but if this guys will play it on jazz, its like re wroting it, and I expect it that way, saw them with Pat Metheny here

  • Terrific stuff.

  • This is why i love brad mehldau!

  • And the heroin addiction.

  • @holeypants74 this.

  • Great 100 voices introduction =-)

  • which song of roling stones does the intro reminds...?

  • remember Brad from Hartford. this is nice!

  • rated this 1 by accident sorry! brad's great

  • caspita..non lo conoscevo , ho ascoltato questo brano, adesso lo adoro! è bravissimo.

  • too much man

  • Yes, god forbid that they should reinterpret it.

  • You just can't handle it man.

  • thank you. they didnt reinterpret it, they rewrote it. not the kinfd of song to do that craziness to

  • @BadSneakers You always know you're in trouble when someone uses the word "deconstruction" willy nilly to vaguely mean something he or she can't articulate! Poor Derrida...

  • Hey, Jacques was the man!

  • i think its 7/8

  • it's in 7/4 because there is a triplet subdivision

  • Hell yeah, a great groove is created whent the bass and drums come in. This trio is awesome.

  • Brad I love you!

  • Interesting!

Do you have a sound example anywhere?

  • It could be 7/4 if you count this as a double time..it grooves harder in 7/4!

  • Sorry Ternary12by8.

It is not 7/4 but 7/8!

  • I actually feel it in 7/8 too....

  • @KurtIngvarB Second thought, I agree with 7/8

  • Just slip out the back Jack

    Make a new plan Stan

No need to be coy Roy

    Just listen to me

    Hop on the bus Gus

    No need to discuss much

Just drop off the key Lee

    And get yourself free

...nope can't sing along to this :( hahaha

  • Time signature - 7/4 - Pure joy

  • static, that was the funniest comment I read my whole life. Ever. Thanks for that.

  • It´s nonsence put it that way. You disclose that you are completely unaware of the art of improvisation. Do you think that improvisation, over a theme, is something one play exactly the same way every time? No no no! Improvisation is something that is a result of bright thoughts, brilliantly witty ideas, implemented at the keyboard instantly - moment by moment. Next time, next day, same process but absolutely different. The music is constructed with lightning rapidity in a jazz musicians head.

  • Magic.

  • Maestro *

  • me dirias la pronunciacion de Mehldau por favor!

  • sorry..bill evans forever

  • Bill evans and this guy are completely incomparable?!?! they couldn't have two more different styles.

  • Ballard!

  • questo pianista è straordinario!!!!!

  • God that camerwork is annoying

  • from Mars

  • Amazing

  • Great one !

  • Amazing!

  • Sorry for my englisch... I am a big fan of Keith Jarrett. But this interpretation of Brad Mehldau was a genuine discovery for me! It swings incredible! The harmony is very advanced, sounds like B.Bartok. I've never heard a jazz pianist with such independent left hand.I am really impressed...

  • @muzyk111 Back in the old days an independent left hand was a must for Jazz pianists. Check out Oscar Peterson or Art Tatum among others or any of the old rag time pianists.

  • @muzyk111 brads better than keith

  • This tune never fails to blow me away. What friggin power! I hate all the comparisons to Bill Evans and even Keith Jarrett (whom I both love). Brad is his own dude and I love the urgency, the bravado, the cool. He paints a very rich sonic tapestry and I love getting wrapped up in it. Never gets old.

    Keep it up Brad!

  • 4:03 ahead: amazing, indescribable!

  • cant even tell its 50 ways. ridiculous. just getting into mehldau now. Largo is the shiiiiiit. get that CD for sure.

  • ...........................he's really goooddddd

  • This is sweet!!!

  • Oh, trust me, they're not random.

  • This man is a fool who knows nothing about the complexity of music, obivously.

  • HAHAHA... Let me see you do better!

  • Who are you even talking to, Mr. Intellect? Try using the reply button next time.

  • Who says that I didn't? Perhaps it is a technical difficulty rather than a personal one.

  • Good god almighty he killed that intro!!! Thats Mr. Mehldau for you though. You must not have heard his other ish if you think that was over technical. Man has defined his own distinct style of jazz.

  • on the CD this tune opens w/ a great solo by Grenadier. i assume this clip comes in about halfway through the performance. and as awesome as this clip is (way!), i think the studio version is even more burning. read my review of it @ all about jazz website. and just so everyone knows, Fly Trio has a new record coming out (Grenadier, Ballard, and Mark Turner)!! for those who may not know, Grenadier and Ballard are the bassist and drummer in this Mehldau clip. GET THEIR CD-YOU WON'T BE SORRY!

  • love that

  • i like it but i find it a bit over-technical

  • Chadwarden gets all the hunnies wif tha PSTRIPPLE! :D

  • um... WHAA?!

  • wow! like it!

  • saw him some weeks ago... just amazing!

  • me too, i felt dizzy even two hours after the concert

  • jazz blanco!

  • this just seems like it flows so naturally from them, its awesome. inspiring.

  • Im LOVIN the 7/8!!!

  • Sounds all original and looks live, but I wouldn't recognise the tune. Marvellous stuff.

  • who´s that drummer? he´s groovin´!

  • Jeff Ballard. I love the way he plays

  • hell ya! jeff ballard is one of the greatest living jazz drummers along with brian blade, jorge rossi .. i really like avishai cohen's current drummer as well, his name slips me at the moment. for more experimental funk and afro-cuban rhythms i love billy martin .. scott amendola rocks too.

  • Dig all them Nasty Drummers! Check out Dafnis Prieto for some of that Latin Jazz and an all around Nasty Player!

  • I know this is a late response, the the drummer you were referring to is Mark Guiliana.

  • What the fuck are you talking about man? You are retarded.

  • lo at 3.31 the drums are over dubbed or its the wrong video frame ?

  • 3.37 sorry.

  • Yeah, wrong footage. NOT an overdub. And as for the black/white thing... Irrelevant in this day and age, mate. 21st century Jazz is multi-coloured, like it or not. Peace!

  • 18/F/Texas. hrmMMmmm. someone msg me im bored!!

  • i think it's difficult to really "understand" jazz - you'd need a very profound knowledge of music theory at least. i wouldn't say that i understand jazz, but i'm getting more and more able to enjoy this kind of music, and it's definitely not "keep on playing no matter how it sounds"; if you listen closely, you'll recognize very complex harmonies, rhythms and sometimes melodic patterns. but i understand you... i didn't really enjoy jazz before i started doing music myself.

  • same for me with the classical music.

  • Spot on, mate! So many People shy away from complexity in music and see it as a barrier to enjoyment, but if one perseveres and takes some time with jazz it's full beauty can be revealed. I spent about six months listening to Thelonious Monk before I "got it", but DAMN, I am SO glad I took that time. Stick with it mate, there's so much more great music to hear. Peace.

  • but jazz is more about feeling sometimes..

  • I think I never understood Jazz...

sounds like "keep on playing no matter how it sounds" to me

Maybe some day I'll get to know what people like about Jazz ;) (and like it myself, then ^^)

  • There's an equally strong chance that Brad ripped off Keith Jarrett "My Song", "Belonging", and those trio records with Gary Peacock and Jack Dejohnette in the 80's. Don't take my word for it, hear those albums and then tell me whether Brad is an "original". If you want to hear an original, check out AYDIN ESEN "Flashpoint" with David Liebman and Steve Smith or download "Timescape".

  • A few obvious points, Modes: The Mehldau arrangement is in 7/4 - is there anything in 7 on those Jarrett records in the 80's? Mehldau steps out of the harmony in a way that Jarrett never did; he has is own melodic ideas; he doesn't play the same 10 real book standards Jarrett has played for 30 years. Finally, he never plays that stupid grace note before a phrase the way every goddamn piano player since the 80's does. There are so many ways that Mehldau is precisely not Keith Jarrett, Thank God.

  • i think you dont know what your talking about

  • i think there is a strong chance you don't know what you're talking about..

  • If this is so unoriginal, Modes9, why is it on your favorites list? Maybe you should take it off there.

  • Really swings. Extraordinarily dextrous playing.

  • It's amazing man..

  • jarrett systems

  • i love this!

in my opinion last seconds when only bass playing are the best:)

  • crazy

  • anyone know if he's single?

  • Married.

  • wow i love it when they get into it after about 2 mins.

  • me too!

  • Ballard brings a lot to the table. The rim click's are so sweet.

  • brad meldau: the pianist

  • rossy*

  • I'm loving jeff's groove (I assume that's jeff ballard? It doesn't look like jorge rossey). I think his playing really reels in the unexperienced jazz listener through the major rock influence. And obviously Brad and Larry are fucking unbelievable

  • why the fuck do you "play jazz piano" if you don't like listening to it?

  • challenging??? its freedom in any point of view... isnt great 2 listen??? are u DEAf!? i feel sorry for you. listening to people like coltrane garret or mehldau its just the payback for life disgraces.

  • man what are you on about? you just disgraced yourself knocking those 3 players.

    this is amazing stuff.

  • man i just said this is the payback for life disgraces jaja whats the part you dont understand they are awesome.. this is the gift for the bad things in life..

  • Understand it's draw?

Jazz draws nearly nothing. Try making a living at it. But for those who love it, it's life it self.

  • you're all ignorant assholes
