Their Legal in Japan and you don't need a permit. Here in the U.S I think their illegal.....I think it depends on the state

If you have a Permit to care for exotic animals, I believe it is legal, otherwise, you could be jailed in the US, I found a wild baby squarel laying on the road, amasingly the poor guy was still alive, so we cared for it a bit and nursed it for a while till we got in contact with a wild animal rehab center. It was really nice to care for the little thing while I could.
