It SEEMS very balanced; something about the physics or the move-sets made it seem so balanced the first few weeks I played it. I believe in casual play the game is very balanced; but the higher and higher in competitive play you go, the more stratified the game becomes. It's inevitable. Like in a race: the fist few minutes everybody is clustered, but the longer the race goes, the more spaced out the runners get.

Some people say things like "only high and top tier characters are tourney viable", tourney viable meaning it's not unrealistic for them to place well in tournaments often. I honestly think Yoshi and everyone above him (on the current tier list) are tourney viable (with MK gone that is). So that's 27/37 = 73% of the cast are tourney viable, which I would say is pretty balanced.
I just think too many people flock to higher tier characters.

If you were trying to win money, weren't you use your best possible character that also had a high advantage over the majority of other characters (aka Top or High tier)? If you are tired of seeing MK, Snake, Diddy, etc, then perhaps you should watch/participate in Low Tier tournaments :/.

Still, data doesn't lie: MK, Diddy, Snake, and Falco all have impressive numbers of tournament wins under their belt. I think the reason you see more C tiers and above is because most players aren't Top Professionals and will try to use C tier or above to maximize chances of winning. Call it a dissolution of character variety, but that sounds like a logical approach to a tourney, doesn't it?

When you play competitively, it's no longer about having fun: it's about winning, usually involving slaving over the games. Another good example is Pokemon (with Smogon listing the "tiers"). Personally, I can't understand why someone would want to breed for 31 IV's in certain stats, certain natures, to what end? So that they get a competitive edge over others and ruining it for their friends? Takes away the fun.

Now that it's summer break, I'll be getting more into Pokemon, and granted, most of my team is "Overused" but it's really just because they just happen to be some of my favorites, like the Garchomp and Blaziken I want. It's not so much which Pokemon you use, or which character in Smash, it's more about just having fun with friends. That's the real umbrella idea for these games, the multiplayer and having a good time, not competition.
@SuaveTito YES! I might not be an expert on the subject, but I think that the purpose of gaming is to have fun. I have nothing against getting a little competitive, but too much of it drains the fun faster than people can even pick up their controllers. That's where the problem lies.
Pokemon-wise, I typically just use the first 6 Pokemon I catch, whoever they may be. One time, it just happened to be a Lugia. I needed a Fly-'mon, wanted one near my level, and he fit the criteria. xD I had fun.

The reason I hate tiers is because if I want to go to a Smash Bros tournament and play as Captain Falcon on Pokemon Stadium or the Metal Gear stage, I can't do that because you fuckers only play as Fox on Battlefield or Final Destination or some shit.
Tiers exist. Whenever you have characters with different stats one character is going to be better than another. The only way to have 100% balance is for all characters to be the same.
REGARDLESS. Tiers are NOT absolute. Low tier characters can beat high tiers. What matters more than tiers is the PLAYERS ABILITY to use that character.
A player who is beast with a low tier character will 9 times out of 10 beat a noob with a high tier character.
@Lonewulf321 Im Anti Tier just because I use Yoshi (64), Jigglypuff(Brawl), and Pichu(Melee) and was always frustrated if I lost that people would blame it on the character and not my skill. But I do agree with what your saying, but with a more balanced concept. Jigglypuff is super weak strength wise, but has an advantage of recovery over Meta Knight. The first time I played Melee, I chose to use Pichu. Everyone laughed at me, and I did indeed lose that match. That didn't stop me from using him and eventually winning a couple of times.
I still do not understand this argument between tourney players and casual players. Nobody is forcing anybody to play by their rules. If one doesn't want to deal tourney rules, don't play with somebody who does. If one doesn't want to hear about tiers, don't play with somebody who brings them up.

Tiers are real. However, most people miss the point of them, particularly most of those who support them. What tiers show isn't which character is best, but rather which character is going to win the most, if you are equally skilled in all characters.

@djrollin212 I never said anyone is perfect with all characters, I said if you are equally good with all characters, the person you will win with the most is higher on the tier list. Naturally, if you are great at a low-tier and suck at a high-tier, you're going to win with the lower-tier more often. The tier list is mostly academic and doesn't actually prove that YOU will win with any character more often, just that the general person is more likely to be better with a higher-tier character.

If you ever got competitive you would have found out that mewtwo was so bad it was funny. There was only one guy who ever got so good with him he had a chance to win a tournament with him and even he admitted mewtwo was so bad that he had to use someone better in a real tournament just to have a chance. Thats bad when the best one in the world says that. Weak damage, way too floaty, terrible recovery(vs edge hog especially) made him useless. Even pichu was better

Every fighting game is going to have characters better than others. Just how it works. The part that makes competitive play fun is out smarting the other player. And the only thing is. Melee competitive play was all over the place. You could see, fox, falco, marth, gannon, peach Captain Falcon or shiek and all be nearly matched. In Brawl they unbalanced it so much that all you see are. MK, Snake, DDD, Falco, and wario basically. Mostly snake and MK because they are so much better

@Hadesdrew actually mewtwo is really good if you know how to use him. Sure he has flaws but that doesn't matter if he fits you like a glove and your a good player. I proved at a friends house twice that even though we were at the same level i beat my friends marth with mewtwo 5 times out of 6 which brings me to the point that tiers are only a theory. Theories can be disproved. Btw mewtwo has many advantages: slow falling, evasiveness, 3 really good smash moves, range, and defense.
Tiers dont say who to play. I mained wolf and I was one of the best ones online for a long time but wolf is low tier. Do I beat higher tier characters. Yes. Is the likeliness high? No. It compares match ups. Like wolf Vs DDD is 20-80. Why? Because DDD can grab me and chain me across the field forever for huge damage to easy kill. Tiers are guidelines to who is better vs them all. MK isnt bad against anyone so top tier. Doesn't mean you should use him. Just your more likely to win.
Link for the win - often when I play Brawl, my opponents severely underestimate is down-a midair hit, much to their chagrin when I win. I miss cancels, though :(

@Zurok151 It seems like for a lot of games competitiveness ruins the fun in a game. When you play competitively, it's no longer about having fun: it's about winning, usually involving slaving over the games. Another good example is Pokemon (with Smogon listing the "tiers"). Personally, I can't understand why someone would want to breed for 31 IV's in certain stats, certain natures, to what end? So that they get a competitive edge over others and ruining it for their friends? Takes away the fun.

@SuaveTito aye. It's not a debate of whether or not tiers exist, since we know they do; It's about how seriously they're taken. The more seriously they're taken, the more those in question become the Stop Having Fun Guys.
I play Pokemon, but I'm so old-fashioned. Frankly if I was that desperate to win over my friends, I'd just hack my Pokemon xD
While I do know that people like Ken Hoang have won thousands playing Smash, we need to remember that 99.5% of us will never reach that level of play.

Now that it's summer break, I'll be getting more into Pokemon, and granted, most of my team is "Overused" but it's really just because they just happen to be some of my favorites, like the Garchomp and Blaziken I want. It's not so much which Pokemon you use, or which character in Smash, it's more about just having fun with friends. That's the real umbrella idea for these games, the multiplayer and having a good time, not competition.

@SuaveTito YES! I might not be an expert on the subject, but I think that the purpose of gaming is to have fun. I have nothing against getting a little competitive, but too much of it drains the fun faster than people can even pick up their controllers. That's where the problem lies.
Pokemon-wise, I typically just use the first 6 Pokemon I catch, whoever they may be. One time, it just happened to be a Lugia. I needed a Fly-'mon, wanted one near my level, and he fit the criteria. xD I had fun.

@Zurok151 You don't have to be an expert on gaming to understand that. Friendly competition is natural in multiplayer games in any case. Taking it to higher levels of competition is rather unhealthy, both physically and socially.
Sure, that's cool; everyone has their thing with how they decide which Pokemon they use. My best friend in college is a competitive player so he breeds like crazy for the 31 IVs, good natures, you name it. While I respect his effort, it's again, quite unhealthy.

PEOPLE.
Tiers exist. Whenever you have characters with different stats one character is going to be better than another. The only way to have 100% balance is for all characters to be the same.
REGARDLESS. Tiers are NOT absolute. Low tier characters can beat high tiers. What matters more than tiers is the PLAYERS ABILITY to use that character.
A player who is beast with a low tier character will 9 times out of 10 beat a noob with a high tier character.

@Lonewulf321 Im Anti Tier just because I use Yoshi (64), Jigglypuff(Brawl), and Pichu(Melee) and was always frustrated if I lost that people would blame it on the character and not my skill. But I do agree with what your saying, but with a more balanced concept. Jigglypuff is super weak strength wise, but has an advantage of recovery over Meta Knight. I could list more, but IM rushing this comment :P

I still do not understand this argument between tourney players and casual players. Nobody is forcing anybody to play by their rules. If one doesn't want to deal tourney rules, don't play with somebody who does. If one doesn't want to hear about tiers, don't play with somebody who brings them up.

Of course, all games have balance flaws, but the fact still remains that people who complain about tiers are scrubs who are looking for any excuse to explain their incompetence and lack of skill at the game. Practice makes perfect, lazy scrubs.

There are no bad characters (well, maybe slow ones), just standing jugglers, OP hitters, and player skill, playstyle and honor factors.
If you're good enough, you can beat any tier-queer, and then they can either A) Admit that their precious tiers are BS and play a character they like, or B) Publically declare that they suck at Smash Bros. and accept a life of failure.

Tiers are real. However, most people miss the point of them, particularly most of those who support them. What tiers show isn't which character is best, but rather which character is going to win the most, if you are equally skilled in all characters.
In other words, tiers don't mean anything unless you can play every character perfectly.

@djrollin212 I never said anyone is perfect with all characters, I said if you are equally good with all characters, the person you will win with the most is higher on the tier list. Naturally, if you are great at a low-tier and suck at a high-tier, you're going to win with the lower-tier more often. The tier list is mostly academic and doesn't actually prove that YOU will win with any character more often, just that the general person is more likely to be better with a higher-tier character.

If you ever got competitive you would have found out that mewtwo was so bad it was funny. There was only one guy who ever got so good with him he had a chance to win a tournament with him and even he admitted mewtwo was so bad that he had to use someone better in a real tournament just to have a chance. Thats bad when the best one in the world says that. Weak damage, way too floaty, terrible recovery(vs edge hog especially) made him useless. Even pichu was better

Every fighting game is going to have characters better than others. Just how it works. The part that makes competitive play fun is out smarting the other player. And the only thing is. Melee competitive play was all over the place. You could see, fox, falco, marth, gannon, peach Captain Falcon or shiek and all be nearly matched. In Brawl they unbalanced it so much that all you see are. MK, Snake, DDD, Falco, and wario basically. Mostly snake and MK because they are so much better

@Hadesdrew actually mewtwo is really good if you know how to use him. Sure he has flaws but that doesn't matter if he fits you like a glove and your a good player. I proved at a friends house twice that even though we were at the same level i beat my friends marth with mewtwo 5 times out of 6 which brings me to the point that tiers are only a theory. Theories can be disproved. Btw mewtwo has many advantages: slow falling, evasiveness, 3 really good smash moves, range, and defense.

Tiers dont say who to play. I mained wolf and I was one of the best ones online for a long time but wolf is low tier. Do I beat higher tier characters. Yes. Is the likeliness high? No. It compares match ups. Like wolf Vs DDD is 20-80. Why? Because DDD can grab me and chain me across the field forever for huge damage to easy kill. Tiers are guidelines to who is better vs them all. MK isnt bad against anyone so top tier. Doesn't mean you should use him. Just your more likely to win.
