  • And by the way, your basement is AWESOME...I have a pretty nice home network setup but I really don't have a lot of gear...I really want to get some more... I will...Just have to find the room...and the cash :) I just sold 5 Cisco E1000 Wireless N's...Should have kept them..

  • Soda fountain...HECK YEAH!!!!

  • Redundancy.!!! smart man!!

  • Also you could do most of this crap in a virtual machine.

  • Neckbeared.

  • i dont have a basement >_<

  • thats alot of stuff lol

  • One day my basement will look something like this, XD

    I'm a young guy so I haven't accumulated as much hardware...yet.

  • why 2 dns servers?

  • @Eientatsu I believe in Redundancy, that way if I have to take one down everything still works. :-)

  • @sirloxelroy okay

  • и сколько же она электричества жрёт ?

    _________

and how much she eats electricity?

  • @Truckanov On my new setup about 397.44 kWh/Month, or for me about $25.33/Month.

  • What is the impact that all this has on your power bill, as far as like KWh?

  • @onionofdeath On my new setup "My Home Network V3.0" I am only running 3 of my new servers currently, not including the CoLo ones at my house. According to my UPS I am drawing about 4.6 Amps continuous. If I figured correctly that would be 397.44 KWH/Month. On LES that is about $25.33/Month

  • aaaaarrrggghhhh a mac!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • this is very cool, but you are crazy XD

the facture of energy? money for maintenance?

    cost=9999999999999999999999999 dolar$/month

  • @Chernobylcolaborator

    Depends on power supply output

If use per kilo watthour for 0.1 USD.

30*24*[kWh for the computer output an hour]*0.1=

    72*[Computer output per hour,kWh]

I think it won't be too expensive.

  • This set-up must rinse electricity. I can definitely see the charm/appeal in keeping this old kit going but it really is a false economy.

My set-up pales in comparison, my server is pretty much a glorified NAS box. Does the job though.

  • This isn't a home network (even though its a network at home), you have servers and stuff so its more of a corporate-style network.

  • nice, but, have you added gb adapters to all your core systems?

  • You have plenty of equipment and your electric bill must be out of this world. I thought that I had plenty of hardware, and software, but you have me beat by a mile. I have just installed Solaris 10 on a computer which I got for a hundred dollars to experiment with. The problem is getting the network setup on it. It has a K7S5A board in it with SIS drivers which I can't get setup. I have the urge to erase the drive and put Linux on the drive instead since I know it works correctly.

  • Who is your ISP? I would think you would need a fast connection for all those servers and what not

  • some of that hardwhare looks pretty old but its cool none the less

if i owned that id call it hobo server hehe

    none the less its cool

  • your basement is my dream cave of evilness :0

  • Get that abominable monster crunching BOINC !

  • double for sorry!

  • THis is cool, but what is the point of all this.?

  • For me, the best way I learn stuff is through trial and error, and doing things. I mainly use my home network for trial work. For instance I am setting up a new Solaris server so I can work on taking my Solaris certs.

  • @sirloxelroy - Thanks for sharing! ...how about an updated tour?

  • For your firewall server... how about running something like OpenBSD's Packet Filter for the firewall software itself and also running an IDS like Snort just behind it?

It would be a very solid firewall. (add a internal log + web server and you couldn't be really be more protected than that)

And btw, very nice configuration you got there :)

  • serious question: if this is at your home cause its titled "my home network" what does this cost you a month in hydro do you figure?

Not just the upfront cost but long term costs that have me curious.. as I myself lately have been feeling the need to go "wide"

  • whats so funny is that you can do all that with one server (dual quad 24 gb ram) and a 5 tb network drive

  • Yah, but not for what I paid for the stuff I have. Unless they have started selling Dual Quads with 5TB for under $1000.

  • try pfsense firewall.

  • I have, however I really like the features and ease of use of untangle. :-)

  • My second favorite type of rack.

  • hahaha that was funny

  • Sometimes the firewall must be disabled, but anyway. server1 is the name of the server, change that to the name of your server, your server may be called, homenetwork so, in the folder type \\homenetwork\films. Its so simple.

  • nice, umm i have a question how can i hook up a computer so i can use its harddrive over the home network if you can answer that would be great

  • Ok, go to the harddrive in my computer (on the pc you want to share the Hdd from!) and right click > sharing (if no sharing press properties and go to the sharing tab) > set up the name, make it simple like (films), go to the next computer, go to my computer, press tools > Map network drive > (drive: the letter does not matter, Folder (\\server1\films)) > Finish, Let it connect.

  • thank you that helped

  • Yes, Wired or wireless, it does not matter, its still a connection =) good luck with it.

  • ok thx you rock

  • No problem mate.

  • hey nother question can i do it wirelessly like a laptop to a desk top

  • dude, this is so cool!!!!!!!! u got a nice setup! r u a network engineer? how long have u been doing networking?

  • And why exactly do you need all these servers for? Are you providing network connectivity to your neighbourhood? I'm a IT Engineer and we don't even have this many servers running. Why don't you use Virtual Servers? I'm still confused as to why you need all these...

  • I do not run them all, all the time. The ones above the KVM I do, the ones under the KVM I run for testing, but then shut them down. I have been trying out, and using some VM systems since this and my other was made. I do some hosting, for some of my friends, and also have started hosting some backup servers for work.

  • WOW! I want a setup like that! :D how much was that?

  • Most the stuff I got at sales, craigslist, or some from eBay.

  • Man, Where do you work to be able to afford that kind of setup in a normal house?

  • holy crap u have TONS OF COMPUTER STUFF!! man u must pay a fortune for your power!!

  • Actually the electric bill isn't too bad. average during the winter (gas heat) for my whole house is $90. Summer it is a little more expensive, around $200 per month.

  • Do i need all of that for a simple home network?

  • no not at all. he just did an advanced home network.

  • Your electric bill most be trough the roof. LOL

  • Oh my god! Its I-raq!

  • ROFL

  • WOW if you don't mind you could just send all that extra stuff you got there to me i would appreciate lol

  • Thats awsome! Id love a set up like that.

  • nice setup, my dad and me working on our home network and we are trying to sell our internet around the neighboorhood for $4.95 a month for 6mb down/1mb up

  • cool setup man

  • must of won the lotto to build such an elaborate network. Great job though!

  • great network, and you are ridiculously knowledgeable

  • I love this network!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • it's funny when people give machiens funny ass mythical domain names, i always lagh when i scan a network and i see a computer called excaliber or yoda

  • Actually the machines are named after the Babylon 5 TV Series, honest I am not a fan. :-)

  • This is something I would love to setup once me and my g/f get a place with a extra room and/or basement.

  • Lol, well very nice network.

  • Very good video. I have a network with 1 server and two client laptops! The server runs Vista with Serv-U installed but i may be getting FreeBSD.

  • hey are you crazy ..

  • Yes lets go look at some trees.

  • I LOVE IT! I DREAM OF HAVING ALL THIS WHEN I GROW UP! However, I think these functions can all be run on less than 3 servers, well thats just me I guess. I would set it up running Windows Server, and just use Remote Desktop to access it. I only use File Serving, RDP, Domain controlling, Active Directory, etc... Oh and btw, THRIFT STORES FTW!

  • nice rack lol

  • hands down the best home network/server vid on youtube to date! (my comments are messed up below. ignore)

    so where is part 2?

  • everything u said was another language to me hahahaha

  • LOL

  • I really think that could all be simplified. You have a load of really old computers running everything when you could have 2-3 running things like DNS, DHCP, etc. And i would hope to god thats not all on a cable line!

  • no, it's all organized. the "Internet" is simple. :)

  • ultraSPARC! that sounds like its the most stable server you got!

what you running on those g4:rs?

  • Id prefer to clear all the junk in the corner out and set up a single display for every system, a command center is what I suggest.

Running SYNERGY across the majority of the monitors, that would really squeeze the last few drops of jizz out of that one. And of course a few hd screens, a real command center you have in the making there.

Also suggest Piping at least TWO jacked wifi connections in there for another layer of "protection"

  • Why not just leave your servers in the basement and put your workstations upstairs? I never have my network around my other LAN is. I dont like the idea of 100 ethernet cables going everywhere.

  • wow, thats massive for just a home network

  • Don't physically go in there, makes geeks drewl.

  • That is not bad. You have alot more stuff than I do but I don't know anything about solaris and a little about linux. I am a microsoft whore so I primary run all microsoft products. How much is your electricty bill.

  • Actually our electric bill is not too bad. It is about $125-$150/mo during the winter and about $150-$200/mo during the summer. I don't think I would use the word whore, you are probably pretty adept with Microsoft, and everyone should work with what they know best, otherwise it would not be fun.

  • My electric bill is a little bit more about $160-$200 in the winter and $257-$320 in the summer. How are you controlling the heat build up and ambient noise?

  • Ambient Noise, well honestly I am just used to it. :-) Heat wise In the winter it is about 60 degree's in the basement, and in the summer it only gets up to 70 degrees. The basement walls are stone covered in plaster, with a total thickness of about 2 feet and are really good at keeping the temperature down.

  • That is quite a basement you got there. I love the air hockey table!

  • Thanks It's fun, going to boost the fans in it though.

  • and if he'll ever get the tubing to get the fountain working....I'll kick in on the packs for Diet Dew and Diet Dr. Pepper.

  • Nice servers thats a pritty good rig. i am waiting to get my rack
