Steinway nazis always have a way to explain why steinways sound 'better'. There just like those idiots that say Ibanez guitars don't sound as good as gibson. Well, tell that to me, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, John Petrucci, Marty Friedman, Paul Gilbert etc.
@stephenishki Ahh but al Steinway pianos are truly different. Some have stiff actions some are light. I myself prefer the action of a stiff piano because I am an organist and I have quite strong fingers. but let's all remember that ALL leading grand pianos are fantastic to play on.
@1001dlee Eventually a computer will be able to simulate your "strings and carefully maintained wood" with such accuracy even you won't be able to tell the difference. It is only a matter of time. Don't get me wrong; a real grand piano is a beautiful piece of craftsmanship, but so is a synthesizer program.
Hate is a strong word! If you don't like it, just say "I don't like it." When I am older, I want to own a Steinway & Sons, because Concert halls have them and I am going to be a pianist so I need to get used to them.
I love Steinways, and yes, all the halls seem to have them, dont they? I actually prefer Blüthner or Schimmel grands, but Steinways are great, too. I think they're better than Bösendorfer, Steinways are purer and lighter, not as rich and deep. Matter of opinion, of course.
That's true mrbeanaswell, I didn't really mean it like, "Listen to me!" I was just saying that hate is a strong word and yes all concert halls do have Steinway & Sons, The only grands I have ever played on were Yamahas. I've heard a lot about Steinway & Sons, a lot of people say they are stunning, I agree with them because every concert hall that I have heard of have Steinway & Sons, so I don't really know anything about Blüthners, Bösendorfers or Schimmels. But I have heard their sound.
I have a Schimmel upright, which is fantastic. Steinways do have a medium touch, not as hard as Blüthner or Bösendorfer, which again I personally like, but every one sees that differently.
I have a Schimmel upright, which is fantastic. I have only played on a Steinway at friends, and its pretty awesome, a much lighter touch than a Bösendorfer or Blüthner, which I personally prefer, but then again, everyone sees that differently. Schimmels have, I think, the lightest touch of all, which is why I prefer them.

Kawais suck.
So much for all that computer bullshit, Steinways still sound 1000x better.
You'd only know that if you played a GOOD Steinway too. I've played my share of shitty Steinways. The first one I played though... My God... Just drained the world around me away as soon as I started playing...
I still hold that Kawai is a bad brand because they make their pianos bright on purpose.
Its a bad sound. A mellow tone is what is needed for classical, jazz, and modern.
Other stuff doesn't matter as much. Its like some other instrument than a piano. They lack the dynamics range that a good Steinway or Bosendorfer has because they're bright.
For instance, Schubert's Op. 90 No. 3 has a completely different character on a Kawai.
you are obviously not a wally but I still think it's a big call, I haven't played a Steinman so cant comment learnedly, if I ever get a chance, I'll pay special attention though
Go to a store that specializes in Steinways. If there is a Steinway store near you, try one there.
Secondhand dealers usually have used Steinways that either need restoration or have not been restored properly(even worse).
A good one has such a clear tone. When you play just a note, its like heaven on earth. A single note is musical on a Steinway. There are all sorts of interesting sounds that one can make with a Steinway, or perhaps other good brands like Bosendorfer or Bluthner.
I have to agree somewhat. I've had the chance to perform on a steinway, and while the Kawai brand is okay, it's a bit bright. I personally would opt for something else if I were piano shopping.
It's all a matter of taste. Someone likes light pianos, while someone doesn't. Saying that Kawai pianos suck is just dumb because they obviously don't. A Steinway piano that has a better sound than a Kawai grand piano can cost up to three times more money so try keeping that in mind.
Also, the most popular piano producer of all, Yamaha, has one of the lightest actions in the piano industry. Bosendofer is much worse than Kawai and Steinway. That company is owned by Yamaha.
Yamaha pianos are meant for amateurs, music schools/institutions and other people that can't afford a better piano.
Believe me, if you don't have the money for a Steinway, Kawai is the way to go.
I recently bought Kawai K6 upright, and I must say I wasn't expecting such a high quality piano for only 11 000 $. I was overwhelmed when I played it for the first time!
U-3. However, I'm considering trading it in for a Kawai of the same size, the main reason being I find the Yamaha quite bright, and with my classical playing, I'm looking for something a little more mellow. Do you think Kawai is the way to go?
@ImageWizardMedia I agree with your statement up until you say Bosendorfer is much worse? Bosendorfer pianos are hand made and shipped across the Atlantic. Everything the music desk to the hammer are hand made, which in turn makes every single Bosendorfer piano sound different, and when you buy a piano that is made in such a fashion it takes years of tuning and perfecting until you reach the ideal pitch/tone/sound t is desired. That being said, your statement about
@ImageWizardMedia Bosendorfer is incorrect , yet I do agree with all the other things you said! No hard feelings, mate! Cheers - From one piano lover to the next

This video shows exactly why no digital piano, no matter how sophisticated it is, can *ever* match up to a grand piano.

@k250014783 What digital piano has strings and is made from carefully maintained wood? Nothing beats the real thing.

Kawai grand is my favourite. Even better than Steinway. Probably because I prefer the harder touch.

You may not have tried one of the better models of a Kawai grand piano because the best models have even heavier keys than a Steinway.
I have been a pianist and composer for over 30 years, and I think I know what I'm talking about.
You also have to consider who will play the piano when you are making one because only pianists can play a Steinway decently.
Kawai pianos are easier to play but they are pretty close to the quality of a Stinway.
