we don't get very much rain at all. it's not enough to support a field of corn so we use irrigations mounted on a central piviot that rotate in a circle on wheels powered by electricity. the water comes from wells. each field has its own well powered by a gas engine. the water is an average of 280 to 320 feet below ground. thanks for the question
it's very unusual compared to where i'm from. Do you use central pivot to save money then ? how many liters per second do you get from the well? thanks a lot
any job openings for next seasons i have done buck raking but the biggest trtactor we use is a jd8420 not quite as big as your girls im from nz by the way
I can't speak to why they don't use dozers, but on our farm, we already hade the tractors, so buying a large blade attachment was cheaper then a dozer. Plus we felt we were able to pack the silage better with the large tractor tires, then with a dozers metal tracks.
Yes, dirt floors and walls. Actually it does not mold at all. They don't cover it with tarp, so they do lose about a 10-12 inch layer on top across the top of the pile. other than that it does really good. We usually pack 40,000-45,000 tons in this pit. And same amount in the other silage pit.
We small people in the uk have no idea of clamp filling on this big scale only on some big dairy's how many acres does it take to fill that pit.all for now.
How many acres, not sure really. The silage comes from 15 or more farmers, depending on how much the feed yard wants. Most contracts are for 250-450 acres. Each silage pit holds about 45,000 tons (don't know what that is in metric, sorry). By the way, ask as many questions as you want, guys from New Zealand and South Africa always come by on slower days when we are not rolling to have a look at the machines and ask us about them, so we're use to all the questions.
That is one hell of a big clamp you boys in the states make things look so easy, when we only have tiny little silage clamps and not enough room to swing a cat here in the uk, got any jobs going LOL..
We finished october 16. Believe it or not, occasionally so much silage is coming in at once the line of trucks can be about 15-25. When this happens we pull one of the tractors out of the hmc (high moisture corn)pit and put it in silage and we bring in both back up tractors, this puts 6 tractors in this pit at the same time. That line of 15-25 trucks takes 2-3 hours to go away. The record for this place is 10,000 ton in 18 hours.
