The director of the All American College Band of the1984 Summer Olympics was Dr Arthur C. Bartner Director of the University of Southern California Trojan Marching Band and his assisstants included Tony Fox assissant director of the USCTMB and Dr Ken Dye USCTMB Alumni and Director of the Band of the Fighting Irish of the University of Notre Dame.

Does anybody know the name of the tune that starts a 4:16? This performance is so amazing given the sheer size of the band! I really wish I was there to see this in person, but I wasn't alive back then!
Thank you for posting this video! I was in the band as well, in the clarinet section. That month still remains one of my fondest memories. I still get the chills watching this video. I remember the hot days at Pepperdine and playing Sing, Sing, Sing in the amphitheater in the evening.
27 years ago at about this time, some of us were on that fleet of 18 buses heading back to our temporary home at Pepperdine. We were no longer bound by the restrictions of our non-harrassment against other schools contract and so we could once again, yell "sc sucks!".
I was also part of the awesome trumpet section and enjoyed every minute of the time we spent at Pepperdine, the Coliseum rehearsals, the opening ceremony... What memories! It was indeed the best summer I ever had and will never again have.
@leporatj One of the best moments as a trumpet player was the 7 part harmony arrangemnet of "Never Walk Alone" we did a night or so beofre the opening ceremeony. Still brings goosebumps to think about it.
@amca90004 The Olympic band was sensational. The USC Trojan band formed the "core" of this band and their legendary director Dr. Aurthur C. Bartner was its director. This is SO American and was one of the highlights of the greatest opening ceremony in Olympic history. LA did the Olympics so well and hopefully will (as London will do next year) host the Games for a third time in the future.

That was the best summer of my life. We had so much fun making new friends and representing the USA. I was also part of the 144 man trumpet section...and everyone was top notch. It took about three weeks to learn the field show, and we had our music memorized before we got there. All expense paid stay at Pepperdine U/ Loyola U. I remember going out to a nearby Pizza place for dinner...with about 80 of us. We took over the place. Those were the days... M. McWilliams
does the "SCV" in your name mean Santa Clara Vanguard? if so, what year did you march, 1985? did you know Mark Gunderson? he marched 1987 soprano and then he was my assistant band director at Los Altos HS...under his dad "Top Gun"(Don Gunderson) Los Altos HS was selected for this 1984 Olympics also ;-)
Did i do the math right? '77-83 is seven years and 1985 eighth year? so you have 2 rings,'78,'81 and you started at 13? cool !!
i think you marched when Rob Carson was on snare and later with Dan Dilullo. HIs twin brother Dave is AWESOME at snare !!! truly the best in the history of DCI snare drummers, right next to Rob Carson, who was his instructor...Dave Dillulo was my instructor back in 1989. He went Blue in 1986 with Tom Float.
Where can I find a video of Rhapsody In Blue from the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics? I was telling my 12 year old son about it and would love to share it with him. I thought it was awesome. Thank you all for any leads.
@Hildy2E Hello, me too, I was looking after this video and I find it today because my son have the same age I had during this olympic game. Internet is a really good think for our memory.
Wow.. .incredible show. I was one of the 144 trumpets. Very cool to see us again, 26 years later. Thank you to the fellow UCLA , USC, THE best of the USA band members, and of course Mr. Henderson and Dr Bartner for an unforgettable summer in 1984, The LOUD rehearsals at the Pepperdine amphitheater were magnificent.. the energy, the arrangements, and the musicianship of the best college musicians around the country made those rehearsals the best part of the experience. Gil Aguilar
It's the UCLA Band combined with USC Band plus other local universities in So. Cal...plus at represetatives from bands in each of the 50 United States.
The drummers (including me) practiced about 1 day a week for a couple of months prior...Then the entire band assembled and practiced Pepperdine University in Malibu about 1 week. Then we got together with the Cermony performers at the LA Coliiseum and practiced for about 1 more week and then...they were were!
Having marched in a military band in high school and then corps band in college I can say that this is hard and they did an excellent job! Love the diamond drills and perfect company fronts!
Hear, Hear!!!! It would be of GREAT SERVICE if you can upload more of these festive opening ceremonies specifically the parade of nations on this beautiful summer blue skies in the background!!!!
Wonderful! I think this is even a better performance than the one of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Band.
Gerrit, besides this clips and the closing ceremonies already on your channel, do you have any further videos of the Los Angeles 1984 opening and closing ceremonies by chance? It would be fantastic to see those in complete length.
