This is the Legare Mausoleum. The story is the young girl, theoretically, had died of yellow fever, which was an epidemic at the time. She was put in the mausoleum, as dead. When they returned to bury the next family member, they found her body, with nail marks on the door. When they interred the new body, and came back later, the door was broken to pieces. Since then, no door has ever stayed on the mausoleum.

graveyard is outside moncks corner, about 10 miles down dr, evans road on the east cooper river. its before rice hope plantation. i grew up in rice hope, used to work at the plantation there for the kasperacks who used to own it. and no the girl was not burried alive, if you do your research she is burried on i believe its johns island, where her uncle lived.

@Super99tj Nope. It's near Edisto Island about 10 miles or so before you get to Edisto Beach, and Hollywood. That is no where near Rice Hope Plantation (I grew up on Edisto Beach as my childhood beach, and spent many months at Rice Hope Plantation in Moncks Corner. They are no where near each other.

In those days that would happen for some reason but usually the person would wake up either during the funeral but I've heard it happening after they were buried so this is true poor girl

@jenksman420 If you are traveling south from Charleston, or going towards Charleston, you will follow the signs to Edisto Beach. Travel down those winding roads. It's an Episcopal Church on the left side of the road about 10 or so miles before you get to Edisto.

I live in south carolina the story goes that a young girl belived to have died was put in the tomb. When they went back some time later to the tomb they opened it and found her curled up in a ball next to the door. There were scrach marks on the door and her fingernails were on the floor. After that day every time they would close the door they would find it open again so they removed it. At night they say you can still hear her cries coming from inside. But there is no door anymore.

I am an archaeologist in the southeast, and I have worked extensively in Charleston, N. Chas, Goose Creek, Mount Pleasant , James and Johns islands, (etc) cemeteries. I have never seen anything that leads me to believe folks hang around their corpse's burial after death. Why should they?

I went up there and it was pretty scary...nothing happened tho. My ex bf went up there a few mos later and when he got into his car all the lights came on the dashboard like they normally do, but they started going off one by one ...one after another after another. he said it freaked him the hell out of there.

Crazy, My boyfriend and I just stopped by there today on the way back from Edisto.

I have been visiting the Mausoleum/Church annually as a child with my family after each week spent at the beach. I haven't been in years so I took my boyfriend with me today.

He was a little creeped out to say the least. I also took a video, I'll post it soon. I got some great pictures too. That cemetery has a ghostly, yet calm feel to it...
