  • Wow. My mom knows Thavisouk. She lived in one of the refugee camps with him and she even has a picture of him as a child. A few months ago he contacted her and invited her to the Emmys where he won a golden globe award. I have a picture of him and my mom in my temple.

  • this is an incredibly deep film with a strong reflection of family and cultural struggles, and a story of loss and sadness in a course of history and war. Co-director and the film's main character Thavisouk Phrasavath is inspiring and genuine role model as the documentary creates a vivid story shot over a 23-year period. incredible and so real, bravo

  • Sorry But this about Laos Isnt Kewl...Make a Lao War Movie about our King,Not Some Gang Stuff..and To me I Believe This is a bad Thing...

  • from war torn Laos to gang ridden streets of brooklyn.............that's why most Asians work so hard

  • the interpretation is wayyyyyyyyyyyy off and politically correct to blacks. She was saying how they were harassed by blacks.I have pure hatred to America I had it before because of how I've been treated but this just takes the fucking cake.

  • anyone know where i can rent or buy this movie? i know its documentary movie. nobody win in war.. only sadness.sorrow.

  • i find it very saddening that the laotian and hmong escaped one war straight into another. you have gangs trying to control territory, same crap that keeps us divided, here and there. i guess we've got it too good to see that we don't have to hid in the jungles to elude death itself. gangsters = selfishness

  • Lesson One: If the CIA (or any agency of the US, for that matter) ever comes into your country and tries to talk you into fighting with them (telling you that the US will suport you all the way, etc., etc.) --- RUN LIKE HELL. Our (the USA's ) record with this kind of thing is atrocious. I'm ashamed of so many things my country has done ostensibly for "freedom" all over the world. Without going off on too much of a rant: the CIA has *entirely* too much power and autonomy.

  • This is an extraordinary film. I love documentaries, especially about the Vietnam War and related subjects, and I was pleased to find that this was a "Watch Instantly" selection on Netflix. It is not only fascinating and quite touching; it is very well made, right down to the haunting but never intrusive music. I recommend this film very highly, I'm an American, and I wish all Americans would learn about what our involvement in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia *really* "accomplished."

  • Winage! I know the guy who made this..

o.o He's basically one of my uncles..

  • I watched it. What a beautiful family becoming great Americans. I will never forget.

  • what is the name of that song...i love it

  • where can i find this movie

  • you can watch it on netflix

  • As an Asian American, this fascinates me. But that dude got some messed up teeth. He looks like Bugs Bunny.

  • why does being Asian have to do with the flim fascinating you? Have you

completely forgotten your cown ultural heritage? This is our history not something to entertain you.

This film is wonderful. I hope all the young Laos children watch it and learn from it. This is what our parents went through and why they are adamant we get an education.

  • @MadHatter34784

Haha yeah, but looks do not make a man nor his character. Those are the teeth

    a true warrior.

  • Can somebody tell me the name of the songs from Laos in that movie. In the soundtrack there is none! I love the last song! I wish i could hear it! Maybe even find it at youtube! thank you very much

  • its by a group named laostha not sure whats the title

  • it is sad story and i do appreciate the producer to made this happen to the eyes of us to see that the War isn't good and it only bring tragedy

  • Oh! My gosh! This is Fantastic Lao Documentary. I am so proud to be Laos.

Thank you so much for your hard work Ai Thavisouk. Congrats w/ur O)Scar Nominee..

  • where can i watch this shit at?

  • download the torrent

  • I cried my ass off when I saw this documentary I was just channel surfing and I came upon this! I was born in the camps and I never actually realized what my parents went through! Makes you think how easy we have it compared to the older generation...

  • we'll never what our parents went through since we were too young to witness those rough and hard times ...

listening to them tell us makes me cries. such harsh lives they faced to get us out of that poverty and wanting the best for their children. i'm so grateful and glad that they chose to get us out to a better place...

i love the country my parents are from and i'm proud to be khon lao...

  • when can we see it again!?

  • im laos and my family also escaped also along with him i was born here not laos though but we have the same story

  • My mom cried while watching this documentary. My grandpa died fighting in the war. RIP

  • my grandpa died too i think it was in the war

  • I'm Lao and my father was also taken as a soldier during the Vietnam War. I'm watching this movie tonight with my mom, can't wait!

  • oooh. this movie looks good :D i'm laos and i'll deff. show my parents this movie, they've been through the same . ):

  • My mom went through this

  • mine too ):

  • My mom was a teacher in the refugee camps and she said she remembers Thavi and his mom. She even showed me a pictue

  • ohh. ha thats hella tight!

  • I think it was him

  • No, it's true she said at the camps everyone called him Souk, short for (Thavisouk) and his mom sold fruits in the Philippines. And the big reason why she remembered Thavisouk is because of his teeth and she didn't go with him she went to California

  • I'lm Laos T.T

  • I've always wanted to see this since I heard about it and looked all over youtube tonight and went to check out the trailer one more time until I found out on here that it was going to air for the first time.I just got finished watching it and it was a great documentary, and made me sad. Thanks jparis290 for the heads up =)

  • This is so sad :( i wanna watch the movie but dont know where.

  • TONIGHT! ON PBS it airs for the first time - check it out at 10:00 P.M.!

  • When does it air again?

  • @jparis290 oh really? tonight? wow. i better put me telly on. ohhhh... wha? a year ago? i feel betrayed.

  • 1:41 she says "they have hands, knives, guns, in their book that they bring, the black people"

This film seems to definitely reflect many Laotian families lives in America that struggle with identity. My mother forced me to learn to read and write in Laos and to learn traditional dancing.

I feel so saddened by the mother who said she fears her children. This is common among parents of first generation Laotian Americans. Teens struggling with identity and going off in the streets into gangs. =(

  • thats true. my parents feel that way too.

  • @asianax79 That kinda reminds me of my cousin, he'd like sometimes give my grandma hard time and stuff, My Granddad was in the war he told my grandma to leave while he risked he life and we came here. so i guess all laotians are mostly from laos and they were born their .

  • @asianax79 thats true because when she says cun dum it dose mean black

  • does anyone know when this comes out on dvd?

  • Sept 1, 2009

  • thank you.

  • looks touching.

  • Can't wait to see this - haven't been able to make it to any of the limited releases....but it airs on pbs Tuesday, July 21, 2009 at 10PM (90 minutes)

  • Kewl Can't wait to see it either thanks for the info!

  • Thanks for the infor! I missed the Boston filming in April. I'm glad I don't have to wait until Sept for the DVD.

  • yep, my dad fought in that war. We came to america in think in the late 70's and I think my mom came in the early 80's.

  • Kuras is one of the many American Left who uses and abuses innocent Laotian Americans to press on their personal anti-American agenda. Laotians are victims of war as such, we are vulnerable. We respect Americans and trust them with our life because our parents had a good experience working with them during the war. This film turns Thavisouk into a bitter Laotian who wish he never came to America. BS,while others are wedlock in the welfare system, they become movie stars, making money. HIPOCRACY.

  • Wait...American media exploiting war victims by selling it as advocacy for their own personal gain...? Nooooooo.

  • You are so wrong in many ways. I know this man and there is nothing bitter about him and Kuras did this movie without any malice intent. Get the true facts before making ignorant statements

  • This documentary is about a true life story of a Laotiane man whose father fought against communish during the 70's. he's 100% Laotiane. If you looked at 0:24 part of the trailer, you can see his father military ID cleary shown it's in LAOS language(assuming you can read laos). This is deffinately not a THAI documentary.

  • Hello please check universetechnique, universetechnique2, greatsorcerer, thaijellybean242. Thank you. Enjoy learn something new. View all my favorite. Thank me later. • She's speaking Laotian the same dialect as my folks.... That's not Thai at all.

  • 1:29 to 1:34 i feel for ya...i really want to see this, and i'm so proud a Thai made film got nominated for an Oscar...even though it didnt win

  • I believe this is a Laos documentary. I don't want to seem anal, but there is a difference between Lao and Thai.

  • Comment removed

  • She is not Thai. It is not a "Thai" name.

The reasoning for having an "r" in Phrasavath is because the old Royal language has Rs. The family was probably a royalist supporter (assuming that because they fought against the communist and are from the north). Plus, translations of Lao words into language sometimes do include R sounds.

They speak the northern dialect. Its higher and faster than the rest of the Lao dialects. I think this is why you believe its Thai.

  • I think you should re-evaluate your Thai. The language is clearly LAO. I do not see how anyone could ever mix these two up.

It is an insult to say Lao and Thai are the same. KHON LAO, quit trying to justify your heritage and language, your history and glory by trying to say Lao is like Thai.

And god dammit people its not "Laos" when you refer to people and language, wtf is that shit. Since when you ever hear "Laos" in the Lao language?

  • it's definitly not thai. my mother has the same last name "Phrasavath", and my father a different one and I'm 100% Laos.

  • Got to see the Bombies first before The Betrayal.

  • A saw this documentary 2 days ago, it was wonderfull, everyone must see it!. I almost cry at the end :).

  • whats the name of the beginning song?

  • any idea where/how i can watch this if im not in the states?

  • It was nominated for an Oscar but lost 5 minutes ago, ugh!

  • this one looked really good too! but Man on Wire was supposed to be the favorite.

  • I need to see this. Reminds me of my father.

  • This movie is on point, all the events that takes place definitely depicts what many Lao families went through. The mother truly reminds me of my own.
