lol @johnniewalker. I know its been 2 years but did you and @cbmuzik ever figure out your discussion as to whether or not Stevie was singing about Michael? Pretty interesting theory. I think I have to side with you on this one Johnnie. Anything is possible but I kind of think its a stretch
I know many people associate MJ with Stevie because of their friendship and Motwon background, but this song has nothing to do with MJ. Stevie wrote this song about his children, Aisha and Keita. Keita is the dancer who Stevie is refereing to, and his older sister Aisha. The information is out there in cyber space if you do a bit of research. Such a feel good song, that you can't help but smile while listening to this classic.
@bolder2009 Thanks finally, someone who knows what they are talking about. However, I thought the boy's name was Hinte' anyway, thanks for showing up when you did. lol
@alittledab27 No worries. The funny thing is that the lyrics are in the album booklet, and the name 'Keita' is there for all to see. I guess in the age of itunes and downloading some people just don't care to look and read the liner notes and info provided. Oh well, as Bob Dylan once said, "the times they are a-changing". Peace and God bless!
@bolder2009 Thank you. That's amazing that I've had this Album all these years and never looked at it to read the lyrics. LOL I can read, these last few years my eye sight is not so good but, back then, I had 20/20 Just always assumed I knew what Stevie was saying. You know that is impossible. I renamed his son. hahaha However, back to the original argument that a certain person wanted to be challenged on, it's definitely not about Michael Jackson or anyone in his family. LOL
I was 5 when this was released so I discovered this album later. I simply do not understand these people who consider themselves diehard fans and knock down this brilliant record and say it is 'inferior' (according to polls on various websites). It is a very creative, funky and soulful album with influences of the past, but also open to a new decade (80's). Definetely one of his best.
I ran across this video because I read "The Color Purple" by Alice Walker and before she begins the series of letters by the protagonist, Celie, there's a part in the novel that begins with the quote "Show me how to do like you / show me how to do it," and I saw it was by Stevie Wonder. I became curious about this and youtube'd the song and ran across this AMAZING talent that is Stevie Wonder. I love this song and thank you Alice Walker for incorporating it into your novel.
@MzBritty WOW, the color purple got you to listen to Stevie Wonder. That's pretty phenomenal. I must say I had the priviledge of growing up with Stevie's music in my house. I don't remember a time without it. Way back when Stevie was blowing on the harmonica in the 1960s. I wish you much more music and exposure in your future. good luck.
So very gifted, Stevies' breathtaking talent has often left me dazed, several moments after the song has ended. The fact of the matter is: Stevies' music has accounted for more pure joy in my life than any other recording artist.........ever! After 52 years on this Earth, I've reached the inescapable conclusion that Mr. Wonder is THE GREATEST SONGWRITER/ENTERTAINER OF OUR GENERATION, and I love him to pieces! God bless him.
I used to LOVE this song as a kid, especially the ending. I remember falling in love with Stevie's music as a young girl, starting with this album. This was one of the many albums on the playlist during my mother's Saturday morning clean up sessions where my older sister and I would sing and dance around our basement apt helping my mother clean up. Good times (rough times-real rough), but still good and I wouldn't trade them for anything in this the world!!! MY ALL TIME FAVORITE ARTIST!!!
Folks, I'm sitting here listening to this song...the style...the lyrics...who wants to challenge me on this one and tell me he wasn't singing about Micheal Jackson? Hrmmmmmmmmm....listen to the first part where he sings he got hell from his sis and ended up becoming the best dancer in the neighborhood....sounds like Mike and his sisters if you ask me.
I dunno though...this was before Mike hit it big (I mean huge really), before he was REALLY known for his dancing, before Thriller and right after Off the Wall came out...
lol..you gotta remember...Stevie knew Mike as a kid. He had access to the guy's family throughout his and Mike's career as he was singing with Jackson 5. You gotta remember, before Mike hit big, he sung background vocals on several of Stevie's songs and even sat with him in the studio during some of his projects. So him and Mike no def had talked alot before Mike made it big going solo. He knew all about Mike just through his connection to Berry Gordy.
don't get me wrong, I'm well aware of how well they know each other...Janet even referred to him as her cousin. You could be right, but I think it's a reach ya know? lol
I dunno...Stevie thinks in abstract when writing...so alot of his material as he mentioned once is from what he hears about real life situations he turns into music. It just brought back everything I've heard about Mike's introduction to being a star as a kid...lol I could be wrong. but eh...let's enjoy his genius. I'll play a song I learned by him for you in a vid one day bro.
@johnniewalker23 LOL...I just happened to run across this and you are right...This song is about Stevie's son.....He said it a long time ago in concert at Radio City Music Hall...I'm smiling..Peace
@johnniewalker23 This came out in 1980. In the black community, The Jackson 5/The Jacksons/Michael Jackson were already HUGE! Off The Wall was already out when this album dropped. So.........I don't know if he was talking about Michael or not, but I definitely thought of MJ when I hear this song now.
@johnniewalker23 michael was known for his dancing since he was 6 years old, since he got on the scene. that lil boy could always get down. I love you Michael, Rest in paradise <3
this is about mike for sure !! lol.. he says "but his mama said no, kids are much too young to go, but his sister said please let him go so the world can see.." thats exactly what happened to mike, his mom was skeptical at first bout him being in the spot light so young. and they really did put on a talent contest at their school back in the day, and mike and his brothers won.. soo dope <3 AAaahhh i love music
Stevie said "with help from his sis...surely that boy would not miss--from being the baddest dancer in the whole neighborhood"! You're a master storyteller just like Stevie! Congrats!!!!
eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeh, shaddaaaap! So I got a word wrong. I don't go reading online lyrics pages to get the words right. The story stands true. He was talking about Mike. Nuff said. *tips cap*
@cbmuzik MJ was heavily influnced by many I'm sure you know. Could be written about the Jackson's or inspired by knowing them. My guess is it's about a black family that actually dances unlike my boring white family that doesn't do shit.
@chocotacojewboy I said it before and I'll say it again. It's actuallly about Stevie's own child, Hinte' wanting to learn to dance like his sister, Aisha. One line actually says "Since age one, Hinte' knew he had the answer, and it was, that someday he'd be a dancer.
@cbmuzik I'll take that challenge. If you listened, Stevie mentions his own son's name (Hinte') And that the boy was asking his sister Aisha (Stevie's first child), to show him how to do like her. hence the name of the song, "Do Like You" Stevie often talked about his son loving to dance and wanting to be a dancer. "Since age one, Hinte knew he had the answer, and it was, that some day he'd be a dancer". So, stop making up your own stories about other people's lives and go get one. ;-)
@cbmuzik I agree with you, cbmuzik! Mike practically came out of the womb dancing, lol! This is the J5/Michael's story, jamming as kids and little Mike dancing like James Brown as young as 5 years old. Michael and Stevie go waaaaaay back, to the Chitlin Circuit days so this isn't a stretch that he'd know his story. Many people that claim to be Michael Jackson fans (especially since his passing) really don't know SHIT, just jumping on his "Thriller" party train and ignoring his beginnings.
I totally agree. I was saying this on another Stevie tune that Dwele in my books is one of those Stevie like individuals in my books. Only 3 albums down but not ONE of his songs sound bad or sound like fillers on his album. And THAT'S the sign of a great artist...when you compose and sing from your soul. Stevie did it best. Dwele is my second favorite Detroit cat hands down...though Stevie is from Saginaw, Michigan...still right there basically...heh
since age 1 keida knew HE was a dancer. why would you ask me this ? was 8 yrs when i first heard Isn't She Lovely always heard that was his baby girl! don't kno fuh sure.
Most memorable Christmas gift I ever received was when I discovered this LP waiting for me under the tree as a 10 year old in 1980.
