Apple always tries to push Final Cut Pro, it is the top of the line editing software that comes with a heavy price tag(typical Apple)... As an independent filmmaker they make you need Final Cut Pro, you can do some stuff on IMovie and I've gotten use out of it, but to add bigger features you need Final Cut Pro(unfortunately). Plus in IDvd they have their logo on all their templates, so when you make a movie and burn it their stupid logo is apart of your respective film, it really is ridiculous.

iMovie HD 6 is a masterpiece of video editing software. (even though it's still child's play compared to final cut, but that's a different story)

Even though Apple REALIZED that iMovie 08' sucks, and offered a free "downgrade" to HD 6, iMovie 09' is STILL the same piece of crap.

I seriously hope they don't phase out iMovie HD 6 compatibility in Snow Leopard.

My new iMac is amazing (just got it today, my first ever Mac), but yes, the iMovie software is not that great. (I edited my iMac unboxing on iMovie '09) But iMovie 09 is an improvement, you can now import MOVs and split clips. It just takes a while to get use to, I ended making a pretty good video in the end.

iMovie 08 is a dog! I've tried creating videos with it, but always wind up going back to iMovie 06, which seems much more logical, and easier to use. I have noticed that iMovie 08 does generate clearer video output than the 06 version, but that seems like the only positive, to an application I otherwise hate to use. Apple, please ditch the iMovie 08 user interface, and create a more advance version of iMovie based on the 06 user interface.

I have imovie 08' and i made 2 videos but one day randomly my imovie wouldn't work for like a week so i updated it and it was back to normal but my videos were not in that box on the left corner of the screen, so i went to my finder and then to movies, and click on imovie projects and both of my videos were in there, but when i would click them to get them to playy it would just open up imovie but wouldn't play the video. what do i have to do to get those videos to play again.

I was using an 07 Macbook. I used iMovie to record myself with guitar, then shared with Garageband and applied LIve Performance. Sounded great. bought a new Macbook Pro and of course I can't even share with garageband anymore. Also, the guitar sounds like ass when recorded on this new machine. I downloaded the iMovie 06 HD that apple provies and it's the old version, but my recording is completely out of sync and sounds like ass. :( Any tips?

I closed and re-opened the iMovie HD 06 and now it's in sync but my guitar still sounds like absolutely crap. Voice is ok. Guitar sounds HORRIBLE. I'd actually expect that from any laptop mic really, but the previous Macbook actually sounded really good. I guess they downgraded the mic quality too..??

I feel like the only people up-in-arms over Imovie 08 are people who are use to the old version. Before purchasing 08 I went to the Mac store armed with a project I wanted create. I had the trainer show me how to create my project in 06 and 08 to compare the functionality. For someone w/ no prior exposure to these programs, 08 was clearly more intuitive and and easier to use so I bought it and for the most part really happy my first video.

I would recommend to demo first before purchasing.

If you have iMovie 06 with iLife 06, be sure to back it up, as you can't get it back otherwise, as far as I know.

You are way over doing it. There is an easy way to split a clip. Just select the amount of video, right click on it, then select "split clip." You're just used to the old iMovie and there is a way to have the same quality in the new one.

As a side note, the voiceover works perfectly, it doesn't speed up. You can chop out parts of video by simply highlighting them and pressing either Backspace or Delete (seems simple enough o.o ) and iMovie `08 is suited for short movies (ie 50% grey, blogging videos, etc.) whereas Final Cut is suited more for tv episodes, movies, etc.

It was the first first computer available to everyone that had a GUI (second if you count the Lisa, also made by Apple which came out on the 23rd of January, 1983. Every single piece of software that had a graphical user interface (ie you operated by clicking on things, highlight, dragging, etc.) was mac-specific. The only reason the Mac isn't the currently most used computer is because the of disaster that came in the wake of kicking Steve Jobs out.
