I've had to "pirate" games that I physically own. Not because I lost the disc or the cd key. Nope, got em. No, because of broken releases, gamestopping bugs, missing install files, etc. put out by developers who don't give a crap because they'll slap a "2" on a game or release a franchise title and you'll buy it. They'll patch/fix it when they fucking feel like it. Up yours consumers. Yep, I've had to get game fixes from "pirates".
So tell me, in that scenario...who's stealing from who?
@SuperAwesomeMovies Don't even get me started on this "consolized" pieces of shit that all these lazy developers have started putting out. Games where keyboard/mouse controls make no fucking sense, you can't change critical settings or controls often. Your control menu shows a picture of a fucking 360 controller. Bulletstorm is a perfect example. Mouse smoothing turned on by default in a PC FPS and no option to turn it off?! "It's EA" has become an actual valid excuse for games these days.
As a pirate, I don't pirate something I could have bought ("stealing" as you put it). Simply put, if I did not download the game illegally, I would not have played it at all. I barely make a living as is, gaming is not a hobby I can afford, at least, not for many games on multiple platforms. Therefore, I resort to piracy.
tl;dr: If I had money I wouldn't pirate, but I don't, so with piracy or not, you would not have profited from me at all.
in my country, brazil, the taxes over games and videogames are ridiculously high so the piracy runs free.
but, although i never have bought an original ps2 game, i have already bought psp games and just like to buy original games for my ps3 which i will not hack for a long time.
thus, in some cases, the government is guilty for the piracy.
You know what else is technically "theft"? Letting a friend borrow a DVD.
Ever heard a song from another car while you're driving? Copyright infringement.
Have a friend over to play a game he doesn't have? Again, CI.
Record a Football game? FBI come to your house.
And that's before you figure out piracy isn't theft.
So, yes, I pirate. I pirate for several reasons, but I'm not a thief. My pirating isn't preventing someone from getting a copy of a game. If it was, THEN it's theft.
@SeanTheOriginal It's still theft. You are taking something WITHOUT PAYING for it. With your logic, I can steal ALL the games on steam and it would not be theft because I am not stopping people from buying the game.
@524mills You are such a dumb piece of shit, how about you look at the proper definition of theft. FFS, the US Supreme Court says that it's not theft along with many other jurisdictions, are you saying you know better than them?
@SenorStocks Are you taking it without paying for it? Yes you are. Saying that stealing games is not theft just because you do not have a physical copy is insane. Also, the Supreme court has said MANY stupid things and has passed retarded laws.
@524mills The definition of theft is not "taking things without paying". Learn the law you moron. And no, the reason it isn't theft is NOT because it's not a physical copy.
@524mills Yes, stealing is stealing, and copyright infringement is copyright infringement. Two completely fucking separate things. Copying a game is copyright infringement, NOT theft!
@524mills How does that not make sense? If they were the same thing there would be no need for 2 sets of laws. Go and look up the actual legal definition of theft from statute and tell me how copying a game falls into that definition.
@524mills Yes you can. But these two don't overlap. Committing one doesn't imply you've committed the other, and downloading a game doesn't fall under theft.
@524mills FFS, are you brain damaged? You could download every single game ever made and it would NOT be theft. Seriously, you are completely wrong. No court on the planet would agree with you.
@SenorStocks Wow, and you say i'm the one with brain damage. It's still STEALING no matter what way to cut it you are taking something without paying for it. And then you are distributing it to other people for free! THAT IS THEFT! GET IT THROUGH YOUR HEAD! Just stop this argument before it becomes a flame war.
@524mills Yes, you're the one with brain damage. The law clearly states that it is NOT theft, yet you continue to insist that it is without anything to back you up other than some half assed "definition" of theft. Explain EXACTLY why you think it is theft with reference to proper legal definitions and statute, otherwise just go and kill yourself and do the planet a favour, you're obviously too stupid to continue living.
@SenorStocks Oh now your telling me to kill myself? How ironic. Can you point to where on the law it says it is NOT theft? You are the one with the half assed definition of theft. Now, can you please stop replying before this becomes a flame war, making us both look like assholes?
@524mills You're the one looking like an asshole. Look, I'll spell it out s.1 Theft Act 1968 (The law is identical in the US) "A person is guilty of theft if he dishonestly appropriates property belonging to another with the intention of permanently depriving the other of it; and “thief” and “steal” shall be construed accordingly." If you copy a game there is no "intention to permanently deprive" anyone of the game, therefore there is no theft as all of the elements are not present.
@524mills And just in case that's not clear enough for you, here's a direct quote from Blackstone's Criminal Practice, which is the leading criminal law practitioner's text in the UK: "'Other intangible property' includes patents (Patents Act 1977, s. 30), copyright (Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988, s. 1) and design rights (Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988, s. 213), although a mere breach of copyright is not theft." Now it's your turn.
@SenorStocks Key word: In the UK. Laws can and WILL be changed with time. Who knows if it is still the same thing? And even if it is just copyright, you are still a felon. I was not calling you a asshole, I was saying we should stop this debate before we both make ourselves look like assholes.
@524mills I clearly said the law is the same in the US! Whether it will still be the same in the future is irrelevant. In the present, I am right, and you are wrong. Copying a game is not theft. End of story.
@SenorStocks I saw that the law was the same in the US, I was trying to say that the law could have changed from when it was made. Neither of us are right, because we both have differing opinions. Like I said before, lets stop this debate before it becomes just the both of us insulting each other.
@524mills The law hasn't changed on this point, Blackstones is continually updated and the US Supreme Court decision of Dowling v United States (the case where they determined copyright infringement is not theft) is still good law. It's not a matter of opinion at all.
@SenorStocks Even if it wasn't theft, it would make you a felon. Either way you want to put it, you are doing something illegal. Opinions are always involved, even in law. All you are saying is "we are doing illegal stuff." and then when I ask why you are doing something illegal you cry "ITS NOT ILLEGAL!"
@524mills I didn't EVER say it wasn't illegal. I said it wasn't theft. And no, on this point there is absolutely no opinion involved, you can argue all you want but no court will ever accept that copying a game/DVD/whatever is theft.
@SenorStocks Even if you are not getting punished for it, its still theft. Sure you may not be arrested or fined, but its still theft. I don't want this debate to go on any longer, so I will just leave it at this: Even if you are not punished for stealing something, your still stealing.
@SenorStocks Dude, will you please shut up? I'm trying to end this conversation before it becomes a flame war and you are over there not dropping it. Yes, it is stealing even if you are not punished for it. Yes, in SOME places it is not illegal. But I was willing to end the conversation right there, but you INSIST on forcing what you believe onto me.
@SenorStocks Oh I am the troll? It IS stealing even if you are not being punished for it. You are the one who needs to die, the world would be better for it.
@524mills That's not what I said at all you moron. It's copyright infringement, not theft. By your "definition" of theft, I would be a thief for accepting a gift as I "took something without paying for it".
@SenorStocks That's not what I said either. I don't see any reason to continue arguing with someone as stupid as you. If you really believe that you are not breaking the law, keep lying to yourself. Just stop responding, you can think what you want, and I will think what I want to think.
@524mills You're still breaking the law, I bloody said that! But you're NOT committing theft. Christ, your mind really is a palace of ignorance if you still think it's theft after showing you definitive proof it isn't.
@SenorStocks You worded that way. Your mind is a palace of ignorance if you don't realize that you should READ what you are about to type. Jesus man, stop insisting you are right. Do you REALLY care about my OPINION so much you need to insult me? Stop fucking replying, Its getting old looking at the same argument again and again and again.
@SenorStocks Not really, like I sai - YOU HAVE VIOLATED THE LAW - sorry, had to get that out of my system. Like I said, there is never a clear - cut winner. Lets just leave it at that.
@524mills There is a clear cut winner, i.e. me. And like I've said a thousand times, copying a game is not theft, but it is copyright infringement. That's what the law says. It's a fact. I win, you lose. Good day sir.
@524mills It was over from my first comment, but no, you had to sling your ignorance all over the place and disagree with an unarguable fact. Why can't you accept you are 100% wrong and leave it at that?
@SenorStocks Why can't you accept that you are not 100% right and leave it at that? Say you won all you want, I'm not responding anymore. I realize now you are the most ignorant and bratty man in the world.
@524mills I can't let it go because I can't let stupidity and completely ignorant comments like yours go unchallenged. You really are the dumbest person on the planet. And I guarantee you will respond to this. PS, I'm right and I won.
@SenorStocks If you REALLY insist on carrying this on I have a few words for you. Fuck you, you stupid, arrogant, ignorant, thick, single minded, fuck. Really, I tried to be civil, but you my friend are to fucking stubborn to realize that you are not always right. Shut your fucking mouth, and stop trying to cause arguments on the internet. You could go out and get a *gasp* job, but instead you are here, insulting some guy you will never meet. Your parents would be proud.
@524mills I have a job. I'm a fucking solicitor, someone who knows about the law. I'm not always right, but I'm 100% about this. Thought you weren't replying? Or are you too god damn stupid to remember what you wrote 5 minutes ago?
@SenorStocks I was not going to reply, but then you had the gull to say what YOU said 5 minutes ago. Also, stop trying to act tough. Both of us know you just used google to find those laws. Just stop lying and admit your still in school. Also, you are not 100% correct. All of this happened because you wanted to nitpick my arguments and defend piracy.
@524mills Yeah, because they put copies of Blackstones Criminal Practice on google for me to find and quote from... I'm not defending piracy at all you inbred hick, I'm saying it's not theft, which it isn't. Go on then genius, how am I NOT 100% correct? Or is putting some coherent thought into something too much to ask?
@SenorStocks Really, didn't you JUST say you were a solicitor? You ARE defending it, even if it is unintentional. The one big hole in your argument is when you said it was not piracy, but copyright infringement that pirates should be punished for. Copyright infringement is not the same thing as piracy, they are just similar.
@524mills It's sarcasm you dipshit, I am a solicitor, of course they don't put copies of it on google. You really are a simpleton. So, how is piracy the same as theft then? Oh wait, it's not.
@SenorStocks You seem to forget one simple thing about piracy, there is more than one kind of it. Ironic isn't it that you would call me a simple thing when you forget that one thing. Also, I could tell it was sarcasm.
@524mills Here's another quote from the same book on the case of R v Lloyd: In Lloyd [1985] QB 829, D, a cinema projectionist, clandestinely removed feature films due to be shown in the cinema where he worked. His co-defendants copied them onto video tape and they sold many such 'pirate' copies; but the original films were returned in perfect working order and continued to attract audiences to the cinema. On such facts there was clearly no theft.
@SenorStocks On your first wall of text, they do not always return the tapes. Tapes of movies are often stolen and then never given back. What about the piracy of music? Or the piracy of books? (Yes, it is possible to pirate books) At the end of the day, piracy is just a synonym for stealing over the internet. Copyright is to protect the works that are then taken.
@524mills *sigh* you really don't understand law at all. Here's a clearer quote from the case of Rank Film Distributors v Video Information Centre: "No offences under the Theft Act arise as copyright is not capable of being stolen and it is not necessary to strain the provisions of that Act since the offences already outlined are available."
@SenorStocks Even if it DOES fall under copyright, you are still stealing even if you are not being punished for doing so. You know, either you we can stop arguing because its obvious that this argument is going nowhere, or we can both shut up and go home.
@524mills Look, that quote explicitly states the exact opposite of what you're saying. You cannot steal copyright, therefore there cannot be theft. Which bit do you not understand?
@SenorStocks You cannot steal copyright in a legal sense, I am talking about stealing in general. You missed the point, even if you are not being punished for stealing, it is still stealing. Also way to ignore what I said about ending this argument, just shows how stubborn you are.
@524mills Stealing and theft are legal terms, so use their legal definitions, not some bullshit ones you've pulled out of your ass. Yeah, no shit, committing a crime without being caught is still committing a crime, I never said it wasn't. Once again, all you've done is prove how much of a stupid piece of shit you are.
@SenorStocks I'm the stupid piece of shit? Really? You know, I thought maybe I could have a civilized conversation with someone as mentally retarded as you, but it is obvious that that is impossible. You have not won like I said before. Now watch, as you reply to me, calling me a retard and insulting me, and watch as I do not give another damn.
@Prnnce Because your not paying for it. Forget about the word stealing, Your getting stuff that you didn't pay for. Just because you don't physically take the object doesn't mean your not stealing! You should be paying for it.
@Clap4TheMoment Go and look at the legal definition of theft, copyright infringement (i.e. piracy) doesn't meet the definition. The property being appropriated has not been permanently deprived. The US Supreme Court said as much in Dowling v United States and in the UK the law is also clear that piracy is not theft.
I can't see how anyone can think that "it's too expensive" is even anywhere near a half decent reason to pirate something. That's so fucking entitled and selfish. If a game is too expensive then you don't buy it! Video games are a luxury item! You don't NEED them! You don't deserve them by default. You will survive if you don't play them. You earn the right to indulge yourself in them by earning the money required! That's how capitalism works you morons!
Piracy is theft. I agree. But for me, I wouldn't do it half as much if PC game companies produced demos again. The art of the PC demo is long lost, they weren't just tidbits of the game to wet our appetites, they also functioned as good benchmarking tools, to let proper PC consumers see how the final product will run on their machine. Not saying more demos will fix it, they won't, but it would help those of us who want to see how things run for them prior to committing fifty to sixty dollars.
@GryffinDarkBreed They should make Demos. I know some people who pirate games just to see if it works ont heir computer. But nobody really has a way of telling how many of those people who pirated it actually did so to see if it'd work on your computer and later bought it.
"Gee, this car's a little too expensive for me to spend money on with my budget. Oh, I know! I'll steal it!"
Stealing the product because you don't have the money for it is only understandable if the product in question is food, and you're dying of starvation at the moment. Anything more and you're nothing but a fucking tool too lazy to save up the extra bills.
Money you spend on a product goes to record companies, publishers, and agents; only a bit of it "goes to the original creators."
By this logic, if you buy something secondhand, it's "stealing" because the original creator doesn't get money. Intellectual property is stupid, there are no property rights on ideas.
I will admit i bootleg games, but i dont share em. my reason is simple, lack of demos of the games that are out, no demo then i will bootleg it and see what the hype is about, if i like it i go to Steam or my local pc store and get the game. if its rubbish i delete it
I love this man with a passion. I'd go gay for him and I have a hot girlfriend. Don't hate him because he speaks the truth. Look, I've pirated things before when I was young and couldn't afford them. It was stealing and wrong and I'm sure Jimmy here did the exact same thing.
Jim, you are the greatest man on Youtube. Keep them coming!
ill be honest iv pirated a game before however i did pay for it i just lost the disc, is that fair?, i mean i payed for a copy of the game just the disc went missing.
try living in rural australia where there is no stable internet connection with always on DRM. You CANNOT play any games that require you to be online, and the only way I can play far cry 2 is to steal it. (I have to take my computer into town in order to download shit)
It's not stealing, once you steal object "X" from "A" person, this man is going to have less "X" things, while when you copy stuff, you multiply goods. Did writers stopped publishing books once libraries were created? No. Did musicians stopped makeing music after we could listen to music by radio? No. The point about piracy and inablitiy to continue gaming business is simply not valid. The only solution is to change business model (way of getting money from players), not ranting about pirates.
different consequences doesn't change the act, using it without paying or permission IS stealing. libraries are funded by the government and radio stations get paid to do what they do or have permission. I'm not defending abusive drm's and I really believe that you can do whatever the fuck you want, just have the balls to admit it because you're the only one believing those flawed excuses.
@imthecaraleo Stealing has very strict definition and piracy isn't really fitting into it. I don't say it's generally good to get games from torrent, but it's not the same thing like mugging ppl. For example, once my doors couldn't get opened, I've ordered a locksmith, saw what he done. Next time when such thing happened, I knew what to do and I managed to get into my apartment without paying a penny. Do you think that's stealing? I've paid for one time service but didn't pay for knowledge i got
@shiverr1337 except you wouldn't have to pay for a locksmith if you knew how to get in the first time either, nor do you have to pay for any service you can do yourself. If you had the resources to program and create the same game you were pirating and you made it yourself, then you aren't pirating it anymore. It would be illegal to sell the game for commercial profit though, as you wouldn't own the rights to it. That, like pirating, would be considered theft.
Actually take a look at some of the EULAs sometime. You never actually own a game from a major publisher, they license it too you, they can revoke that license at any time.
When you take that into account, piracy is not so much stealing as contract violation (not to say I'm condoning that of course). It's a little scary though, that something you payed money for can just be taken away from you. That reason leaves me sitting on the fence with piracy. Moral vs legal dilemma.
You also not realize that making a shitty graphics and PRIMARILY VERY EASY AND NOT COMPLEX console game is a lot cheaper than spending all that time to make amazing DEEP and with good graphics PC game.
@GenericAmerican1 The problem with this response is, console gaming continues to sell hundreds of millions of copies, as where pc game sales are hurting, besides the obvious PC exclusive titles like a Starcraft 2 or World of Warcraft, we are going to see less and less exclusive AAA pc exclusives because of pirates.
Wonder why Witcher 2 is coming to xbox? fucking piracy.
@smro00 We probably will see less so called 'exclusives' due to 'piracy'. But does being exclusive matter? Pc games are still being made, at the same rate as consoles And besides, piracy is overblown in its proportions. Overblown by the same people who say "consoles don't have this problem" scaring developers to creating console games and then hiking prices.
Spore, one of the most pirated games to date, has about a 7:8 buyer-pirate ratio, not the insane amounts claimed by devs.
@smro00 also I'm fairly sure the Witcher 2(great game btw) was planned to release on consoles even before they released for PC. I was reading about it on the website, something about the tech needed to bring it the consoles.
Not piracy idiot, more profit. Noones going to release a game exclusively for 1 system nowadays, they need more money. Exclusives like uncharted , killzone , Halo , gears of war are either published by Sony or Microsoft - console makers. Use at least half of your brain before you post, or you just like to touch your keyboard...
@smro00 There never were much PC AAA exclusives anyway, even Half life 2 was multiplatform game, it was released on XBOX 1 . You're really really dumb... wonder why starcraft and WoW arent on consoles? Because one is a fucking RTS which needs a mouse and keyboard, there is absolutely no fanbase on consoles for these titles. And MMOs are just not possible on consoles.
@axemen233 I do know about modding a console. Only difference is that it's time consuming and sometimes costly (buying the chip and soldering kit). The amount of pirated console copies to PC copies is like comparing day to night.
With the PC it's just a matter of ripping a game from a torrent, then slapping in a cracked exe in place of the original. No real risk involved to your hardware.
In other words, PC piracy is a hell of a lot easier, thus more active.
@elsewhereify Developers have absolutely no say in what DRM gets chosen or used. Only in a very small number of cases did were the devs ALSO the publishers and ALSO chose intrusive, game-breaking DRM. It's so rare it's not even worth mentioning.
I used to use an R4, but I was only 10, and knew nothing about piracy. I just knew I was getting free games, and getting Pokemon Diamond before its western release without having to import it. Once I did become older and learn that it was piracy, I dropped it, updated my DSi and never touched it again, but even before that, I still bought 90% of my games at my local EB Games!
A remarkably stupid comment about PC gaming dying. These guys have been repeating this shit for almost 20 years now, isn't it about time they learn from empirical evidence that PC gaming will never die?
@pdPOINTnCLICKbq Oh, my bad. I'll admit I didn't realize you were being sarcastic there. I mistook you for another one of those "PC gaming is dying, consoles are king" idealists. Sorry about that.
@Geistian Not limited certainly, but it takes far less effort on the PC. Hell, it takes no effort at all - you torrent and go. Piracy will never, ever be stopped, ever. The trick is to make it difficult enough to where Joe Inbred can't do it.
@pdPOINTnCLICKbq lol come on the majority didn't even have PCs back then and played old consoles. so i guess PC gaming is now on the contrary on its rise.
I pirate Adobe Software because it is sold at ridiculous costs, since I am a student and need it for school. Games are a different matter. Being a developer myself I see exactly how much work goes into this stuff, and people deserve to be paid. Adobe are the exception in this regard since i don't believe that Design Premium is worth £400 for what I am gonna do with it. That is more than my entire computer.
@NFM1337 Never said it was wrong, but I see the arguments against it. I however have to use Adobe software for my course at school, and can't afford it. Its an actual requirement of the course.
@SpAMCAN Yeah, sorry. Didn't mean to sound like such an asshole. I pirate stuff too. Movies mostly. But I admit that it's theft. Thing is, for me, the fact that something is wrong doesn't mean I won't do it, but it goes on the cons-list. Like "Downloading this movie is clearly theft... but on the other hand, I really want it." *CLICKS ON TORRENT LINK*
@NFM1337 Yeah, pretty much. I like to pay for things, when I can. But hey, whatever, torrents are often the easier way of doing things. Which is why Steam is the best thing ever, its even easier.
@NFM1337 Pirating is wrong! Unless something can no longer be purchased new. After all, if pirating Super Meat Boy (which can be purchased on Steam and similar places) is like punching the dev's in the face (which they "don't fucking care" about), then pirating the soundtrack to Jet Set Radio (which is out of print, according to my research) is like punching Elvis in the face.
@NFM1337 I completely agree. If I can't afford it, it makes sense to pirate it. I remember buying pirated copies of games like Spyro the Dragon 3 for the PS1 when I was younger, because I couldn't afford it. If I COULD afford it, I'd buy it. Simple as that.
SenorStocks 1 month ago
@SenorStocks Oh now your telling me to kill myself? How ironic. Can you point to where on the law it says it is NOT theft? You are the one with the half assed definition of theft. Now, can you please stop replying before this becomes a flame war, making us both look like assholes?
524mills 1 month ago
@524mills You're the one looking like an asshole. Look, I'll spell it out s.1 Theft Act 1968 (The law is identical in the US) "A person is guilty of theft if he dishonestly appropriates property belonging to another with the intention of permanently depriving the other of it; and “thief” and “steal” shall be construed accordingly." If you copy a game there is no "intention to permanently deprive" anyone of the game, therefore there is no theft as all of the elements are not present.
SenorStocks 1 month ago
@524mills And just in case that's not clear enough for you, here's a direct quote from Blackstone's Criminal Practice, which is the leading criminal law practitioner's text in the UK: "'Other intangible property' includes patents (Patents Act 1977, s. 30), copyright (Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988, s. 1) and design rights (Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988, s. 213), although a mere breach of copyright is not theft." Now it's your turn.
SenorStocks 1 month ago
@SenorStocks Key word: In the UK. Laws can and WILL be changed with time. Who knows if it is still the same thing? And even if it is just copyright, you are still a felon. I was not calling you a asshole, I was saying we should stop this debate before we both make ourselves look like assholes.
524mills 1 month ago
@524mills I clearly said the law is the same in the US! Whether it will still be the same in the future is irrelevant. In the present, I am right, and you are wrong. Copying a game is not theft. End of story.
SenorStocks 1 month ago
@SenorStocks I saw that the law was the same in the US, I was trying to say that the law could have changed from when it was made. Neither of us are right, because we both have differing opinions. Like I said before, lets stop this debate before it becomes just the both of us insulting each other.
524mills 1 month ago
@524mills The law hasn't changed on this point, Blackstones is continually updated and the US Supreme Court decision of Dowling v United States (the case where they determined copyright infringement is not theft) is still good law. It's not a matter of opinion at all.
SenorStocks 1 month ago
@SenorStocks Even if it wasn't theft, it would make you a felon. Either way you want to put it, you are doing something illegal. Opinions are always involved, even in law. All you are saying is "we are doing illegal stuff." and then when I ask why you are doing something illegal you cry "ITS NOT ILLEGAL!"
524mills 1 month ago
@524mills I didn't EVER say it wasn't illegal. I said it wasn't theft. And no, on this point there is absolutely no opinion involved, you can argue all you want but no court will ever accept that copying a game/DVD/whatever is theft.
SenorStocks 1 month ago
@SenorStocks Even if you are not getting punished for it, its still theft. Sure you may not be arrested or fined, but its still theft. I don't want this debate to go on any longer, so I will just leave it at this: Even if you are not punished for stealing something, your still stealing.
524mills 1 month ago
@524mills No it's not. Seriously, just give it up, you don't have a clue what you're talking about. I'm embarrassed for you.
SenorStocks 1 month ago
@SenorStocks Dude, will you please shut up? I'm trying to end this conversation before it becomes a flame war and you are over there not dropping it. Yes, it is stealing even if you are not punished for it. Yes, in SOME places it is not illegal. But I was willing to end the conversation right there, but you INSIST on forcing what you believe onto me.

@524mills It's not stealing. You are wrong and a complete fucking idiot troll. Go and die now, thanks.

@SenorStocks That's not what I said either. I don't see any reason to continue arguing with someone as stupid as you. If you really believe that you are not breaking the law, keep lying to yourself. Just stop responding, you can think what you want, and I will think what I want to think.
524mills 1 month ago
@524mills You're still breaking the law, I bloody said that! But you're NOT committing theft. Christ, your mind really is a palace of ignorance if you still think it's theft after showing you definitive proof it isn't.

@SenorStocks You worded that way. Your mind is a palace of ignorance if you don't realize that you should READ what you are about to type. Jesus man, stop insisting you are right. @524mills There is a clear cut winner, i.e. me. And like I've said a thousand times, copying a game is not theft, but it is copyright infringement. That's what the law says. It's a fact. I win, you lose. Good day sir.
SenorStocks 1 month ago
@SenorStocks Dude, lets REALLY not get into a argument about arguing. Neither of us won, leave it at that.

@524mills I have a job. I'm a fucking solicitor, someone who knows about the law. I'm not always right, but I'm 100% about this. Thought you weren't replying? Or are you too god damn stupid to remember what you wrote 5 minutes ago?
SenorStocks 1 month ago
@SenorStocks I was not going to reply, but then you had the gull to say what YOU said 5 minutes ago. Also, stop trying to act tough. Both of us know you just used google to find those laws. Just stop lying and admit your still in school. Also, you are not 100% correct. All of this happened because you wanted to nitpick my arguments and defend piracy.
524mills 1 month ago
@524mills Yeah, because they put copies of Blackstones Criminal Practice on google for me to find and quote from... I'm not defending piracy at all you inbred hick, I'm saying it's not theft, which it isn't. Go on then genius, how am I NOT 100% correct? Or is putting some coherent thought into something too much to ask?
SenorStocks 1 month ago
@SenorStocks Really, didn't you JUST say you were a solicitor? You ARE defending it, even if it is unintentional. The one big hole in your argument is when you said it was not piracy, but copyright infringement that pirates should be punished for. Copyright infringement is not the same thing as piracy, they are just similar.
524mills 1 month ago
@524mills It's sarcasm you dipshit, I am a solicitor, of course they don't put copies of it on google. You really are a simpleton. So, how is piracy the same as theft then? Oh wait, it's not.
SenorStocks 1 month ago
@SenorStocks You seem to forget one simple thing about piracy, there is more than one kind of it. Ironic isn't it that you would call me a simple thing when you forget that one thing. Also, I could tell it was sarcasm.
524mills 1 month ago
@524mills Here's another quote from the same book on the case of R v Lloyd: In Lloyd [1985] QB 829, D, a cinema projectionist, clandestinely removed feature films due to be shown in the cinema where he worked. His co-defendants copied them onto video tape and they sold many such 'pirate' copies; but the original films were returned in perfect working order and continued to attract audiences to the cinema. On such facts there was clearly no theft.
SenorStocks 1 month ago
@SenorStocks On your first wall of text, they do not always return the tapes. Tapes of movies are often stolen and then never given back. What about the piracy of music? Or the piracy of books? (Yes, it is possible to pirate books) At the end of the day, piracy is just a synonym for stealing over the internet. Copyright is to protect the works that are then taken.
524mills 1 month ago
@524mills *sigh* you really don't understand law at all. Here's a clearer quote from the case of Rank Film Distributors v Video Information Centre: "No offences under the Theft Act arise as copyright is not capable of being stolen and it is not necessary to strain the provisions of that Act since the offences already outlined are available."
SenorStocks 1 month ago
@SenorStocks And what about the other types of piracy I mentioned? If you really think you are 100% correct, then why argue with me?
524mills 1 month ago
@524mills That quote covers all types of piracy and copyright infringement.
SenorStocks 1 month ago
@SenorStocks Even if it DOES fall under copyright, you are still stealing even if you are not being punished for doing so. You know, either you we can stop arguing because its obvious that this argument is going nowhere, or we can both shut up and go home.
524mills 1 month ago
@524mills Look, that quote explicitly states the exact opposite of what you're saying. You cannot steal copyright, therefore there cannot be theft. Which bit do you not understand?
SenorStocks 1 month ago
@SenorStocks You cannot steal copyright in a legal sense, I am talking about stealing in general. You missed the point, even if you are not being punished for stealing, it is still stealing. Also way to ignore what I said about ending this argument, just shows how stubborn you are.
524mills 1 month ago
@524mills Stealing and theft are legal terms, so use their legal definitions, not some bullshit ones you've pulled out of your ass. Yeah, no shit, committing a crime without being caught is still committing a crime, I never said it wasn't. Once again, all you've done is prove how much of a stupid piece of shit you are.
SenorStocks 1 month ago
@SenorStocks I'm the stupid piece of shit? Really? You know, I thought maybe I could have a civilized conversation with someone as mentally retarded as you, but it is obvious that that is impossible. 1. "Intellectual Property" isn't property.
2. "Piracy" affects "Intellectual Property."
3. Theft only affects property.
4. If theft only affects property, and "Intellectual Property" isn't property, then "Piracy" isn't theft.
5. Therefore, "Piracy" isn't theft.

Clap4TheMoment 1 month ago

GryffinDarkBreed 3 months ago
@GryffinDarkBreed They should make Demos. I know some people who pirate games just to see if it works ont heir computer. But nobody really has a way of telling how many of those people who pirated it actually did so to see if it'd work on your computer and later bought it.

Stealing the product because you don't have the money for it is only understandable if the product in question is food, and you're dying of starvation at the moment. Anything more and you're nothing but a fucking tool too lazy to save up the extra bills.
wilnich592 3 months ago 4
Money you spend on a product goes to record companies, publishers, and agents; only a bit of it "goes to the original creators."
By this logic, if you buy something secondhand, it's "stealing" because the original creator doesn't get money. Intellectual property is stupid, there are no property rights on ideas.

The only solution is to change business model (way of getting money from players), not ranting about pirates.
shiverr1337 6 months ago
@shiverr1337
different consequences doesn't change the act, using it without paying or permission IS stealing. libraries are funded by the government and radio stations get paid to do what they do or have permission. I'm not defending abusive drm's and I really believe that you can do whatever the fuck you want, just have the balls to admit it because you're the only one believing those flawed excuses.
imthecaraleo 6 months ago
@imthecaraleo Stealing has very strict definition and piracy isn't really fitting into it. I don't say it's generally good to get games from torrent, but it's not the same thing like mugging ppl. For example, once my doors couldn't get opened, I've ordered a locksmith, saw what he done. Next time when such thing happened, I knew what to do and I managed to get into my apartment without paying a penny. Do you think that's stealing? I've paid for one time service but didn't pay for knowledge i got
shiverr1337 6 months ago

PC gaming isn't dying...and you can pirate console games too; it's a fucking nightmare too do so but it is possible.
GenericAmerican1 6 months ago
@GenericAmerican1 The problem with this response is, console gaming continues to sell hundreds of millions of copies, as where pc game sales are hurting, besides the obvious PC exclusive titles like a Starcraft 2 or World of Warcraft, we are going to see less and less exclusive AAA pc exclusives because of pirates.
Wonder why Witcher 2 is coming to xbox? fucking piracy.
smro00 6 months ago
@smro00 We probably will see less so called 'exclusives' due to 'piracy'. But does being exclusive matter? Pc games are still being made, at the same rate as consoles And besides, piracy is overblown in its proportions. Overblown by the same people who say "consoles don't have this problem" scaring developers to creating console games and then hiking prices.
Spore, one of the most pirated games to date, has about a 7:8 buyer-pirate ratio, not the insane amounts claimed by devs.
Piracy my ASS
GenericAmerican1 6 months ago
@smro00 also I'm fairly sure the Witcher 2(great game btw) was planned to release on consoles even before they released for PC. I was reading about it on the website, something about the tech needed to bring it the consoles.
GenericAmerican1 6 months ago
@smro00
Not piracy idiot, more profit. Noones going to release a game exclusively for 1 system nowadays, they need more money. Exclusives like uncharted , killzone , Halo , gears of war are either published by Sony or Microsoft - console makers. Use at least half of your brain before you post, or you just like to touch your keyboard...
raditzum 6 months ago
@smro00 There never were much PC AAA exclusives anyway, even Half life 2 was multiplatform game, it was released on XBOX 1 . axemen233 6 months ago
RipperLord 6 months ago

@pdPOINTnCLICKbq lol come on the majority didn't even have PCs back then and played old consoles. so i guess PC gaming is now on the contrary on its rise.

I pirate Adobe Software because it is sold at ridiculous costs, since I am a student and need it for school. Games are a different matter. Being a developer myself I see exactly how much work goes into this stuff, and people deserve to be paid. Adobe are the exception in this regard since i don't believe that Design Premium is worth £400 for what I am gonna do with it. That is more than my entire computer.

@SpAMCAN Pirating is wrong! Unless something is too expensive and I want it. Flawless logic.

Games that don't have demos is what pirating is for, and if you like the game you should buy it and if not then why support a bad game?
