There aren't really any "health bars" for the monsters in MHFU, but you can tell if he is about to die when he starts to limp, run away from you a lot or go into "rage mode" with every hit on them. They also become really sluggish when they move when they are close to death.

I like the cats, I think that they have some genuinely useful skills (i.e. flute buffs, gathering). You just have to experiment with them. Yet another deep little system in this game you can check out if you're bored :)
