@radicalownership here in germany hunters may only use guns that hold only a single round cause thats enough for shooting a deer or a duck or whatever. you can get a special license to shoot semi automatic rifles and shotguns but you have to do weapon training at least once a month. you also have to register all firearms that you own and pay tax for it.

No one has really convinced me on either side yet. I think it's really interesting the point Michael Moore made on invaders using a home owners gun against them. Frankly I could see that as being true -- particularly with women. I mean, I don't think I could effectively get to a weapon before someone who is skilled with guns. But at the same time the criminals certainly won't follow a law and then we could be left with armed criminals and weaponless civilians. How would you transition from that?
@MarioSMB3 Let´s talk geography. Switzerland it´s a Schengen State but is not part of the EU. They also have higher income and a higher level of education than practically any other country worldwide, together with a strictly tight inmigration policy. All these things combine make it quite difficult for violence to erupt. EU countries like Spain, Portugal, Germany, France, GB or the Netherlands among others do have a strict gun policy. Don´t underestimate the knowledge of those around you ;-)

@777danzig sure... the US has one of the lowest average income tax rate in developed countries (~30% versus usually ~40% and above) but... taxes are the problem. and i would also be interested to know how it would benefit children if they won't even survive childhood because of all the poison the ingest because of a lack of government oversight. which is very lax already, plenty of health issues because companies can do whatever the hell they want.
@notthere83 Yeah, federal taxes are low, but we are taxed both by the federal and local government. The people and businesses are being attacked in two different ways and as a result we have this complicated tax system that screws people over and makes them work hard to keep up. If we had a federal flat income tax, and only the states give out tax breaks or increases then it would be simpliar, people would have money so would businesses and they can give out benefits.

I agree and disagree with Mr. Moore on this issue. It sounds like he is trying to say that people wanting to use guns to protect themselves is at the root of the problem and completely discounts the numbers of times a gun is used for protection. The example of a homeowner being killed with his own weapon is a very bad argument. If the homeowner isn't armed then the intruder is more than likely to be. He doesn't include that in his analysis.

The thing about Bowling for Columbine that always annoyed me was that you established the fact that gun/ammunition availability was NOT causing more shootings in Canada. Thus, going on the offensive against K-Mart didn't make any sense as a solution to the problem. It seemed like a big attention grab more than anything, using the kids as pawns.

Crunched some basic numbers. 2009 - US population of a hair over 307 million. Whites - 244.372 million; Blacks - 39.603 million. Take those arrested for murder and we get homicide rates of 1.94 for US Whites and a staggering 12.12 for US Blacks. Again these are rough. Why the HUGE difference? And recall, the "White" population includes those I.D'd as Hispanic/Latino. If one can factor those out, you would see that 1/94 drop even further.
It is also going back historically and looking at murder rates back to the 1930s towards today. Comparing the US to the UK, you see that even back in the '30s, when the UK still allowed civilian possession of firearms, that the US still had a homicide rate a great deal higher than the UK. One needs to ponder why that was the case, if firearms are the issue? As well as, with the proliferation of firearms the last decades, why has the US murder rate declined so dramatically from the 60s or 80s

@radicalownership here in germany hunters may only use guns that hold only a single round cause thats enough for shooting a deer or a duck or whatever. you can get a special license to shoot semi automatic rifles and shotguns but you have to do weapon training at least once a month. you also have to register all firearms that you own and pay tax for it.

No one has really convinced me on either side yet. I think it's really interesting the point Michael Moore made on invaders using a home owners gun against them. Frankly I could see that as being true -- particularly with women. I mean, I don't think I could effectively get to a weapon before someone who is skilled with guns. But at the same time the criminals certainly won't follow a law and then we could be left with armed criminals and weaponless civilians. How would you transition from that?

@MarioSMB3 Let´s talk geography. Switzerland it´s a Schengen State but is not part of the EU. They also have higher income and a higher level of education than practically any other country worldwide, together with a strictly tight inmigration policy. All these things combine make it quite difficult for violence to erupt. EU countries like Spain, Portugal, Germany, France, GB or the Netherlands among others do have a strict gun policy. Don´t underestimate the knowledge of those around you ;-)

Just not as often since those countries do not cultivate fear as much. What do you do when you are in fear? you pick up a weapon to protect yourself: a pair of scissors or a gun if available. Without being in fear you will not pick up a weapon. Bowling for Columbine sumed up the situation in America on that regard. I own 3 firearms.

From a business standpoint it is easy. K-mart found an opportunity to improve their "brand equity" by taking the bullets off their shelf that were not making them much money anyway. It's simple. Michael Moore helped K-Mart by giving them a reason to take an unprofitable product off their shelves.... while making themselves look good. Also with my level of training I could pop of 30 rounds semi-accurately in under 30 seconds from 3 10rd. clips. About crime, well, my CZ 75 9mm will keep any crime from happening in this house, or to my girl, or my daughter, and to tell you the truth, that's all I really care about. 2 to the chest and 1 to the head is a highly effective way of resolving conflicts.

The point is that you shouldn't be scared into feeling that you NEED a gun, because lets be honest, i doubt you, or the millions with guns under their pillows will ever use them for the purposes you "need" them for. If you want a gun so that you can shoot it down the range, then thats fine, but wouldn't you rather live in a society where you don't have to be scared into keeping a gun, or even think about using one?

Personally I wouldn't kill someone over a DVD player, and anyway most people who break in to houses don't intend on waking people up and if they do, they would run a mile. Im assuming you keep your gun at home anyway. Finally, the fact that you are talking about what you could do with a semi, i take it you are suggesting a criminal could also do the same damage and so a hunting rifle would be the same as an M4? you know, even though i'm all for gun control and such, i think the most important line in the movie was still said by marilyn manson. that he would listen to those kids because probably nobody else did.
if bad parenting and bullying would be made a bigger issue than it is (but of course you can't ever blame parents... that wouldn't "sell". so hard...) and fought, there would be a lot less (if any at all) school shootings.

@notthere83 Well, if the federal government wasn't so big and had so many taxes and regulations(something Moore is for, big federal government) which means both parents have to work multiple jobs to keep up with taxes and the rising cost of food and bills, then they can spend more time with their kids. If the federal government let the states, for the most part govern themselves, then we can see better results. Moore doesn't mention that because he wants the federal government to do everything.

@777danzig sure... the US has one of the lowest average income tax rate in developed countries (~30% versus usually ~40% and above) but... taxes are the problem. and i would also be interested to know how it would benefit children if they won't even survive childhood because of all the poison the ingest because of a lack of government oversight. which is very lax already, plenty of health issues because companies can do whatever the hell they want.

@notthere83 Yeah, federal taxes are low, but we are taxed both by the federal and local government. The people and businesses are being attacked in two different ways and as a result we have this complicated tax system that screws people over and makes them work hard to keep up. If we had a federal flat income tax, and only the states give out tax breaks or increases then it would be simpliar, people would have money so would businesses and they can give out benefits.

I hear about tax increases for the rich, and according to Obama that is a family of $200,000+ a year. In Omaha or KC that is rich, but in NYC or Boston that is more middle class for a family of 5. If we allowed the local government to do more and decrease the federal government's power than problems like health care or what not would be managed better.

I agree and disagree with Mr. Moore on this issue. It sounds like he is trying to say that people wanting to use guns to protect themselves is at the root of the problem and completely discounts the numbers of times a gun is used for protection. The example of a homeowner being killed with his own weapon is a very bad argument. If the homeowner isn't armed then the intruder is more than likely to be. He doesn't include that in his analysis.

The thing about Bowling for Columbine that always annoyed me was that you established the fact that gun/ammunition availability was NOT causing more shootings in Canada. Thus, going on the offensive against K-Mart didn't make any sense as a solution to the problem. It seemed like a big attention grab more than anything, using the kids as pawns.
I am a fan of your work generally...but that always bothered me.

Crunched some basic numbers. 2009 - US population of a hair over 307 million. Whites - 244.372 million; Blacks - 39.603 million. Take those arrested for murder and we get homicide rates of 1.94 for US Whites and a staggering 12.12 for US Blacks. Again these are rough. Why the HUGE difference? And recall, the "White" population includes those I.D'd as Hispanic/Latino. If one can factor those out, you would see that 1/94 drop even further.

It is also going back historically and looking at murder rates back to the 1930s towards today. Comparing the US to the UK, you see that even back in the '30s, when the UK still allowed civilian possession of firearms, that the US still had a homicide rate a great deal higher than the UK. One needs to ponder why that was the case, if firearms are the issue? As well as, with the proliferation of firearms the last decades, why has the US murder rate declined so dramatically from the 60s or 80s
