But im not about to go bow down to the pope. I dont need him to speak for me. So why should I be a nut?
No. He's saying that religion should not be a la carte. Buy into the whole, don't select what aspects you agree with.
If I view a house which is perfect except there's one bathroom and it's too small, I should not buy it. And if I consider a religion that requires me to support something I don't feel I can, I should not subscribe to it.
Too bad we can't convince this pope asshole that the DEA, ATF, and state prosecutors are the problem. As George Carlin said: "If you wanted to start cleaning up the world with a gun, you could do a lot worse than a whole bunch of dead prosecutors"

I'm thinking that you aren't a religious person. And yet, you're throwing a lot of bad karma my way. I think right here is a good demonstration of what actually is the most harmful thing on Earth: people full of anger.
There are all sorts of terrible things happening in the world, and 'belief' is only the cause of a select few of them. Sex trade in India, the Great Purge, and the genocide in Rwanda have nothing to do with 'belief'. The common factor here is hate. Selfishness fits here too.
I don't see any reason you can't be spiritual, and still be, i don't know, sane? Of course there is no law that says you can't. And I'm glad that you do not take the bible literally. But, how do you not see that you are cherry picking from both sides? If some of the bible isn't true, then what makes the rest of it true?
Well I dont believe the events in the bible actually happened. I believe that they are stories to help guid people in the right direction. Like the good samaritan. a guy left for dead was lying on the road. 2 people past him and was scared shitless so they ran without helping the guy. But, then another guy did stop to help him. That kind of thinking isnt in the new testmet. Where people realized that it's on to have different views. Now goin back to evolution. People like Ben Stein believe that maybe both parties are right. The problem in your line of reasoning is that you assume Catholics take the Bible literally, when they do not. This is a common mix-up with some Protestant sects, which take the Bible as the literal word of God.
As Christopher Hitchens pointed out once in a debate, Georges Lemaître the priest that was responsible for coming up with the big bang theory, and the pope at the time said something along the lines of[Wow this is amazing, you want me to make all catholics to belive this? I have that power]. It should drive a hard and real point home, by suggesting that, the scientific evidence and the humility and discovery of truth doesn't matter when you interject religion.
Anyone can belive anything, based on evidence or not, but its not fair to humanity to base things off of religion and make it sound scientific when it's not. Your reason for beliving in Evolution or the Big Bang Theory should be based on scientific evidence for it, and not your pure convictions, feelings, faith, ect. I think thats what Penn was getting at, if you are already making unnessisary, unscientific claims, you should keep on doing it because it seems to purpetuate itself.
Ok but religion isntthe cause of all the misery on the planet. As a matter of fact Communism has killed more people then religion. But, people dont want to believe that because religion is such an easy target. And people seem to think that casual god beleievers like me are no better the muslim extremists.
Not true. Communism's killings (I'm guessing you mean those carried out by certain Communist leaders as personal attacks, not having anything to do with communism) are nowhere near even comparing to all the deaths caused by religion - not all religion, just those few that believe in 'convert or die', and the few earlier who believed in common human sacrifice.
I disagree because with communism/socialism. If you didnt agree with them or didnt do what you were told. They blew your head off. Thats what countrys like Iraq, Afghanistan, Cuba etc are like. Hell Saddam killed an Iraqi soccer player for not playing good. A lot of people always blame religion because it's such an easy target. They dont seem to realize that there are other things that are way worse. I mean, this isnt the spanish inquisition anymore. We have gotten past that. Atleast most of us.
You are thinking of authoritarianism, which the Church used to partake in until enough people woke up and decided to free themselves from it. Iraq and Afghanistan are far from being communist or socialist nations - but, like Cuba and the USSR, share an authoritarian dictatorship style of government. When religion takes that role, the results are even bloodier, thanks to the added bigotry and faith-based persecution. Christianity and Islam are nothing nice. Religion doesn't have to be evil.
communism has killed more people than religion? you must be very confused. Do you know how many wars have been fought over religion? and what muslim extremists are you talking about? the ones you hear about on the news? you are very misinformed
Its not just communism. Its more on the lines of the quest for power. Communism, Socialism, Street Gangs etc. What no ever bothers to look at is the other side of the coin. Lots of people have also been saved by religion. As far as muslim extremist goes. Just because some died doesnt mea they were killed for religion. Saddam has killed tons of Iraqi athlete because he thought there performance was bad. Plus the Gladiator era. People getting killed if Ceasar didnt like ur performance?
Religion is such an easy thing to blame these days that anybody will fall for it. Plus people dont seem to care about the differance between a modern day catholic like myself. And a muslim extremist. Just because we believe there is a god doesnt mean we're the same. I mean my grand father is a WWII veteran. And there was a saying he tought which was "Theres Not 1 Atheist In A Fox Hole". And with everything going down the crapper today. Sometimes it healthy 2 believe in something.
In 1968 Pope Paul issued his encyclical letter "Humanae vitae" which reaffirmed the Catholic position on contraception. No surprises.I am an atheist but found myself in the very weird position of defending the Pope to a Catholic priest. The priest was trying to find loop holes in the argument. My position is the same as Penn's (I think). If you join a dogmatic religion like Roman Catholicism then you have to learn to grin and bear it. Don't join a basketball team and expect to play baseball!
Yes, Newton was a Christian and a tobacco smoker. He also liked fatty roast pork. As much as I admire Newton as a scientist, it doesn't mean that any of those habits are good for you :)
We also don't know how serious he took his religious belief. He lived in an age when it was frowned upon to proclaim yourself an atheist or agnostic, so he might have gone through the motions for the sake of social appearance and tradition only.
Penn mentioned Newton on the vid as if he were a atheistic scientist or something. That's the only reason I mentioned him. Why do you feel the need to try to discredit him as a Christian? I'm not too sure how seriously S.Hawkins takes atheism- he lives in little scientific community that frowns upon Christianity... blah, blah, blah...
I'm not trying to discredit him. He lived in another time and operated under a different paradigm. And even today, a natural scientist could be a (very moderate & non-literal) Christian without running into major inner conflicts.
I think Penn only mentioned Newton as one of the many scientists whose work has, in a way, diminished the domain of god(s). In the sense that more and more natural phenomena can be explained without having to resort to supernatural / magical explanations.
By the way, Stephen Hawkins is more of a deist who, like Einstein, calls the universe with its natura laws (or perhaps the entirety of universes) "god". Without really meaning an intelligent supernatural entity. He is a naturalist in a way, but I wouldn't call him an atheist.
alright- that's cool.. I really don't want to argue (not saying that YOU do)... thanks for being civil, though... too many people get way too hateful on here, ya know?
Please don't encourage the fanatics. Freedom of speech is a modern secular concept and I would prefer not to live near people who view religion as incompatible with secular freedom. Those who go "all out" can be observed among the mullahs of Iran and the 9/11 hijackers from Saudi Arabia.
I don't want to inadvertently help the "Dark Age crowd" by selectively criticizing the more progressive bunch.
Reason often comes in the form of gradual illumination....
Ok, so I'll explain this to you... but I sure hope your over 18... ;) When a mommy and a daddy love each other very much... they like to hug each other in a special way that creates a very special You around 9 months afterwards, provided that mommy didn't lie to daddy about hugging the milkman when she was asked about it.... then it could be sooner than daddy's math tells him you should have came. Hope this helps. ;)
Thanks Penn! I can't stand "Moderates" - when I was a Catholic I believed it all then I became an evangelical and believed it all entering Bible College and all that.
Then my research proved it was all wrong and now I'm an atheist. I ACTUALLY believed my religion unlike most of the Western World who SAY that they're Christians and yet apparently don't believe any of it and YET are FOR religion and AGAINST atheists... WTF?!?!
If people knew what they were really supporting with their religious affiliations they might well question their position.
The pope recently hung out of his window and address the masses (as well as millions of TV viewers) and stated categorically that Hell is a real place, it is not metaphorical.
He cannot possible KNOW that, so he intentionally lied. Using his supposed authority to trick millions of poor ignorant people.
The Anglican church better watch out, because a whole lot of Catholics are going to be joining them during Pope Benny's reign. Half of my family is Catholic, quite devout I might add, and every single one of them can't stand him. Benny's going to push out the last remaining Catholics who stayed after the child abuse scandal, so maybe he'll do some good after all.
Thankyou for bringing the camera up Pen (if I may be so informal) for a while there I felt like I was listening to you speak while giving you a blow job...but I agree with you and I agree with Pope Benedict...he is a smart man...I loved how he tried to initiate the 'latin mass' again. (to bring sanity back to the church) it's brilliant because that's what it comes down to in the World of nations: Vernacular and psycholinguistics.
Most of the people that I know who take pride in being a member of a religion or a political party, do not agree with every single thing their party or religion stands for. So whats the point in associating with these groups at all? Can't people just have opinions without affiliations?
First off, the metaphor was about the value of human life, not that he would or would not kill all the chimps (he would)
You complain about the value that Penn gives human life yet your trying to avoid answering the question yourself.
So, Penn came to the conclusion that since the likelyhood of any single person existing is astronomical, and since exist, that their existance is priceless. Priceless means without price, no cost, ALL the monkeys.
Obviously you feel human life is more valuable then a chimps considering many have been killed to find cures.
So your reasoning isnt even scientific. You are intentionally taking a metaphor intended to exemplify Penns belief in the value of human life, and trying to use a rather ignorant supposition to quantify an argument against it.
Scientists use bacterial cultures, invetro cultures, SPR, GM mice and other ways to find cures, rarely chimps.
Agree entirely, Nothing worse then a closet atheist living their life pretending to be a Christian to fit into society, all the while never reading the Bible, never adhering to the rules and suppositions of their religion. Its those same people who get angry when you speak out against their religion yet demand that others respect their beliefs when by their actions we can see that they dont even respect their own religion.
Such is the hypocrisy of religion, and what Penn is referring to.
So how many chimps would you put on the average human life out of curiosity?
1 chimp? 3 chimps?
How much exactly is a human life worth?
As an Atheist, one must accept that the statistical odds of all the circumstances that came together to make the ME that exists is astronomical, so that makes MY life extremely precious to me, why is it 'religious' to apply that same self worth to everyone else in existence?
Now, how many chimps would you kill to save your own life, how much are YOU worth?
You and I are worth nothing. Worth is a sentiment, not a real, tangible thing. It's completely subjective and doesn't exist outside of the human mind.
Its true that value is nothing more then an abstract concept.
Does that mean however that we shouldn't pay mortgages since ownership is an abstract concept?
Should we rape and pillage since morality is an abstract concept?
"Reality" is the persistent unifying similarity between individual observations. Because of this, the concept of value increases with the rarity of something.
Our lives are infinitely rare. I don't mean life in totality, I mean as an individual. Only one exists.
I'm an orthodox catholic and I kind of agree with Penn here. Either follow the teachings of the church en toto or get out. Likewise embrace materialism with all its trappings (purposeless cosmos, absence of free will, no basis for ethics and no special dignity for human beings) or reject it. Matter is not free. That said, I'd still buy Penn a drink if I ever met him.
I consider myself Episcopalian even though I don't go to church very often and I'm not even 100% sure that I believe in God or Jesus. I call myself Episcopalian because when I need moral, spiritual, or emotional guidance I turn to the Episcopal church. I think that nuts are the very problem with religion. People taking the Bible literally have caused wars and pain throughout history. I look to religion for guidance and help, but do not think that it is a road map that I should follow blindly.
Not all Germans were "jew-killing animals". Hitler put many Germans into concentration camps where they died. But I'm sure you were expecting I would read beyond the hate and anger in your comment and understand what you were saying.
Check yourself before you post ridiculous unfounded comments in a spirit of hate and anger. You angry angry man. Or should we all have the "right" to stereotype and hate an entire country? You are no teacher of Truth.
i disagree about the false information.. giving someone two different storys makes people want to know which side is more to the point. the fact that these people are even commenting is proof of this.
but i agree about germans and nazis as you have said alpha as my father is german but i was born in australia. think for a min about how the nazi's messed up there own people. my grandparents were in camps in germany as germans and.......
It's times like these that I'm glad there are angry skeptics like you.
First I would like to point out your ignorance of WW2 era history in Germany.
Who controlled Germany and what age was every German child required to join the H.J.?
The age was 9 and the Controlling party was the Nazis.
Did young Joseph Ratzinger join the H.J. at 9? no he didn't. He and his parents were good Bavarian Catholics who hated the Violent and Murderous Nazis.
It was not until 5 years later when Joseph was 14 that he decided that being a priest was the only way to correct the social destruction that the Nazis were causing in his country. He wanted to go to seminary but he was from a poor farming family. The German government no longer paid for your education unless you joined the H.J. (Did you see the movie "Swing Kids"? It was an ok portrayal.)
Joseph's Parents sent him to talk to his math teacher, a good man and a family friend, about joining...
...Joseph went to go sign the papers and was in front of his Math teacher when he broke down into tears and decided that he wouldn't sign and that he would find another way to serve God. The math teacher said he would take care of things. Joseph was enrolled in the H.J. without even having to sign away his name. His school education was paid for. He wrote extensively about the errors of the Nazis, and is the Pope today. THAT'S MY POPE.
You are an atheist hater drone. Read a history book.
Ha ha Pen you ignorant atheist. Copernicus was a Roman Catholic Priest. I think you meant to say Galileo, who was also Catholic or else he wouldn't have gotten in trouble for slandering his bishop.
Humm. Let's think look now at other Catholic clergy scientists. Fr. Gregor Mendel-founder of the discipline of genetics.
You are such a drone. And an exorcist should knock on your door after the B.S. spot you did on Mother Teresa.
your an idiot seriously... penn only comes up with this stuff to go over the top to make people think... thats it .. its to make people think.
and for those people who question penn's "character" and "morale" he doesn't drink nor smoke and is anti-drug and is a firm advocate of bettering oneself and thinking not just taking a mans word as the thruth...
you people just can not take anyones alt ideas with out getting all up someone. for gods sake he is just a man with his own ideas
So it's a fight between who's the biggest murderer, atheism or religion?? Anyway, read Mein Kampf (ick), Hitler was NOT an atheist! And Stalin and Pot created religions around themselves. (Stalin went to seminary, btw.) In any case, Stalin, Pot, Hitler, didn't have ppl killed out of atheism, but because they're insane! Can u say the same of the 2000 years of religious war and inquisition and witch burning and religious genocide?
WTF? The Catholic Church is the most heinous thing that has happened to the ENTIRE world over history. You have got to be kidding me. Why don't you go and confess that you're an ignorant asshole.
I gonna have to disagree with penn and the pope on this one, if people half assing their religion makes them more modern and generally easier for the rest of us to handle then I'm fine with that.
you're right, penn. If people are going to believe in religion, ANY RELIGION, you might as well put on a silly hat, dance around a campfire, and battle ghosts and demons while you shout in toungues at the devil. all religion is crap, modern or mystic.
Ok! Whatever makes everyone happy. All I am saying is. People that like to believe what they want other then your religion...let them...be happy for them. Poeple that follow with you, Let it be. Just No force. =]
The Pope is part of Christianity. Why bother others that don't about it? If you really believed in Religion you wouldn't bother people with it. People get it, just don't acknowledge it. Everyone should go their own ways, there shouldn't be know Obligations or Blackmailing. It is wrong to be told you've Committed a sin. Poeple that say they don't push religion on others Basically they do, by telling people they committed a Sin, and/or they will burn in hell. Come one? Everyone Deserves the truth!
No one knows about true life itself. It is unexplained. People that chose to believe in something let them. That is how I feel about Penn, and any others that complain. Like the saying 'Live and Let live.' Why be religious when you know nothing about everything? Religion was created. TRUTH: People really need to do what they want to best, fuck what others say. Following something else just a predicument, no one knows the truth. There may or may not be a god, though no one knows what or who it is
I'm Catholic, and that's like the basis of Catholic teaching, Penn. Let your yes mean yes and your no mean no. No happy medium. Dude, except for the whole God/No God thing, you're absolutely right. Rock on.
Your usage of the word faith is flawed by ignorance. Faith is when you believe in something without evidence. And while science can get crazy at times, it is merely an assembly of what truths and facts we have of the universe.
I'm a SubGenius Christian Discordian Deist with Pagan tendencies and occasional Agnostic leanings. I've even considered dabbling in Aetheism. They don't come much nuttier than me. I believe in pretty much everything.
PENN for being an atheist u so help us Christians ALOT!!! Once again pointing out how now days so many Christians claim to be but dont read the bible and believe in abortions and such then justify it by "being a modern Christian." no that doesnt work out with the big guy...............Yes Jesus i love you but i killed babies you picked out yourself just like this bible i claim to live by says u do. Communism's killings (I'm guessing you mean those carried out by certain Communist leaders as personal attacks, not having anything to do with communism) are nowhere near even comparing to all the deaths caused by religion - not all religion, just those few that believe in 'convert or die', and the few earlier who believed in common human sacrifice.
griffinpage 2 years ago
I disagree because with communism/socialism. If you didnt agree with them or didnt do what you were told. They blew your head off. Thats what countrys like Iraq, Afghanistan, Cuba etc are like. Hell Saddam killed an Iraqi soccer player for not playing good. A lot of people always blame religion because it's such an easy target. They dont seem to realize that there are other things that are way worse. I mean, this isnt the spanish inquisition anymore. We have gotten past that. Atleast most of us.
IbanezJFS 2 years ago
You are thinking of authoritarianism, which the Church used to partake in until enough people woke up and decided to free themselves from it. Iraq and Afghanistan are far from being communist or socialist nations - but, like Cuba and the USSR, share an authoritarian dictatorship style of government. When religion takes that role, the results are even bloodier, thanks to the added bigotry and faith-based persecution. Christianity and Islam are nothing nice. Religion doesn't have to be evil.

communism has killed more people than religion? you must be very confused. Do you know how many wars have been fought over religion? and what muslim extremists are you talking about? the ones you hear about on the news? you are very misinformed
tylowylo12321 2 years ago
Its not just communism. Its more on the lines of the quest for power. Communism, Socialism, Street Gangs etc. What no ever bothers to look at is the other side of the coin. Lots of people have also been saved by religion. As far as muslim extremist goes. Just because some died doesnt mea they were killed for religion. Saddam has killed tons of Iraqi athlete because he thought there performance was bad. Plus the Gladiator era. People getting killed if Ceasar didnt like ur performance?
IbanezJFS 2 years ago
Religion is such an easy thing to blame these days that anybody will fall for it. Plus people dont seem to care about the differance between a modern day catholic like myself. And a muslim extremist. Just because we believe there is a god doesnt mean we're the same. I mean my grand father is a WWII veteran. And there was a saying he tought which was "Theres Not 1 Atheist In A Fox Hole". And with everything going down the crapper today. Sometimes it healthy 2 believe in something.

Actually, Newton took his religion VERY seriously. He probably spent as much time trying to decypher the prophesies of Revelation as he did physics.
kittyprydekissme 3 years ago
In 1968 Pope Paul issued his encyclical letter "Humanae vitae" which reaffirmed the Catholic position on contraception. No surprises.I am an atheist but found myself in the very weird position of defending the Pope to a Catholic priest. The priest was trying to find loop holes in the argument. My position is the same as Penn's (I think). If you join a dogmatic religion like Roman Catholicism then you have to learn to grin and bear it. Don't join a basketball team and expect to play baseball!

Isaac Newton was a Christian.
Vaekkrinhart 3 years ago
Yes, Newton was a Christian and a tobacco smoker. He also liked fatty roast pork. As much as I admire Newton as a scientist, it doesn't mean that any of those habits are good for you :)
We also don't know how serious he took his religious belief. He lived in an age when it was frowned upon to proclaim yourself an atheist or agnostic, so he might have gone through the motions for the sake of social appearance and tradition only.
Tastentier 3 years ago 2
Penn mentioned Newton on the vid as if he were a atheistic scientist or something. That's the only reason I mentioned him. Why do you feel the need to try to discredit him as a Christian? I'm not too sure how seriously S.Hawkins takes atheism- he lives in little scientific community that frowns upon Christianity... blah, blah, blah...
Vaekkrinhart 3 years ago
I'm not trying to discredit him. He lived in another time and operated under a different paradigm. And even today, a natural scientist could be a (very moderate & non-literal) Christian without running into major inner conflicts.
I think Penn only mentioned Newton as one of the many scientists whose work has, in a way, diminished the domain of god(s). In the sense that more and more natural phenomena can be explained without having to resort to supernatural / magical explanations.
Tastentier 3 years ago
By the way, Stephen Hawkins is more of a deist who, like Einstein, calls the universe with its natura laws (or perhaps the entirety of universes) "god". Without really meaning an intelligent supernatural entity. He is a naturalist in a way, but I wouldn't call him an atheist.
Tastentier 3 years ago

Please don't encourage the fanatics. Freedom of speech is a modern secular concept and I would prefer not to live near people who view religion as incompatible with secular freedom. Those who go "all out" can be observed among the mullahs of Iran and the 9/11 hijackers from Saudi Arabia.
I don't want to inadvertently help the "Dark Age crowd" by selectively criticizing the more progressive bunch.
Reason often comes in the form of gradual illumination....

Great point.

You judge him for that? Thats weak.
ixamraxi 3 years ago
Obviously you feel human life is more valuable then a chimps considering many have been killed to find cures.
So your reasoning isnt even scientific. You are intentionally taking a metaphor intended to exemplify Penns belief in the value of human life, and trying to use a rather ignorant supposition to quantify an argument against it.
Scientists use bacterial cultures, invetro cultures, SPR, GM mice and other ways to find cures, rarely chimps.
So how many Chimps IS a human life is worth?
ixamraxi 3 years ago
Moronic, literalist interpretation ftw. You're not a valuable form of life until you're in my phone book. kthx
SilentHobo 3 years ago
Agree entirely, Nothing worse then a closet atheist living their life pretending to be a Christian to fit into society, all the while never reading the Bible, never adhering to the rules and suppositions of their religion. Its those same people who get angry when you speak out against their religion yet demand that others respect their beliefs when by their actions we can see that they dont even respect their own religion.
Such is the hypocrisy of religion, and what Penn is referring to.
ixamraxi 3 years ago
So how many chimps would you put on the average human life out of curiosity?
1 chimp? 3 chimps?
How much exactly is a human life worth?
As an Atheist, one must accept that the statistical odds of all the circumstances that came together to make the ME that exists is astronomical, so that makes MY life extremely precious to me, why is it 'religious' to apply that same self worth to everyone else in existence?
Now, how many chimps would you kill to save your own life, how much are YOU worth?
ixamraxi 3 years ago
You and I are worth nothing. Worth is a sentiment, not a real, tangible thing. It's completely subjective and doesn't exist outside of the human mind.
AmericanHikikomori 3 years ago
Its true that value is nothing more then an abstract concept.
Does that mean however that we shouldn't pay mortgages since ownership is an abstract concept?
Should we rape and pillage since morality is an abstract concept?
"Reality" is the persistent unifying similarity between individual observations. Because of this, the concept of value increases with the rarity of something.
Our lives are infinitely rare. I don't mean life in totality, I mean as an individual. Only one exists.

I look to religion for guidance and help, but do not think that it is a road map that I should follow blindly.

je55tr 3 years ago
It's times like these that I'm glad there are angry skeptics like you.
First I would like to point out your ignorance of WW2 era history in Germany.
Who controlled Germany and what age was every German child required to join the H.J.?
The age was 9 and the Controlling party was the Nazis.
Did young Joseph Ratzinger join the H.J. at 9? no he didn't. He and his parents were good Bavarian Catholics who hated the Violent and Murderous Nazis.
...Continued...
thealphacrow 3 years ago
...
Joseph's Parents sent him to talk to his math teacher, a good man and a family friend, about joining...
thealphacrow 3 years ago
...Joseph went to go sign the papers and was in front of his Math teacher when he broke down into tears and decided that he wouldn't sign and that he would find another way to serve God. The math teacher said he would take care of things. Joseph was enrolled in the H.J. without even having to sign away his name. His school education was paid for. He wrote extensively about the errors of the Nazis, and is the Pope today. THAT'S MY POPE.
