  • Hi Trudy, thanks for this very helpful video!. A couple of questions: Is the serving size which you mentioned at the end (e.g. 4-5 cups for Shanti, etc.) for the entire day, i.e. do you feed your dogs this serving size once or twice a day? And could you please also provide the name of the third supplement (other than VegeDog and Yeast) again?

  • Thanks for the recipe! My dogs aren't vegan because I have not done enough research on it and I'm too concerned I will not be able to meet the requirements right now. But I do make this healthy meal for them often and they love it!!!! I add a healthy powder supplement I found in Dr. Pitcairns book. Congrats on keeping your dogs healthy!

  • Very good and informative video, thanks!

What kind of plant enzyme do you use and where can I buy that?

  • What about the nutrients and stuff? I mean, when warmed, 50-70% of nutrients is destroyed, and when being cookied so long, isn't even more destroyed?

  • Good video. Unfortunately I live in Sweden and can't get that vege dog supplement! Any idea what to do? Can I just safely skip it? Our dogs is getting so bad cuz of the meat! The meat quality is so bad for dogs. They live better on a vegan diet compared to this bad meat quality. But most of all; If someone can live on a cruelty free diet, WHY NOT? It doesn't hurt them, it doesn't hurt anyone else. Stop being illogical (u ppl complaining) and start looking at logic and fact.

    Anyway; Trudy- help

  • @IngensVGN Look at health food stores online, find Taurine and L Carnitine. You can get them in powder form or in capsules you can break open. Nutritional yeast (called Savoury yeast here) is also available at health food stores.

  • This isn't fair to the dog. Yes they can survive on it, but they don't thrive on it. If your ethics prevent you from feeding a dog properly then you shouldn't own one. A raw meat diet is far more appropriate.

  • @lbjohnson2

In the first place, I don't "own" any dog. Unfortunately, I have had to rescue several, and foster as well as have adopted a couple of these guys. I honestly wish there wasn't such a huge need for rescue, but until people stop letting their dogs have puppies all over the place, I'll be rescuing dogs that can't find homes.

As far as "raw meat diet" is concerned, there is evidence that this diet can be very harmful to dogs due to the filth, bacteria, raw feces found in the meat etc.

  • Think of all the poor cows and sheep and chickens you can save from a cruel death. My dog loves to eat what I eat.

  • Hi, do the dogs love the taste? And what makes them like the taste? The nutritional yeast? My dog is very picky, loves the meat and he might be a hard convert...I might try it. Thanks. N

  • uhmm what does meat have that veggies dont have?NOTHING SO SHUT THE FUCK UP EVERYBODY fuckng assholes, shes been feeding her dogs 3+ years with no problems so shut the fuck up with ur "dogs need meat" get the fuck out

  • I love the ignorant people saying dogs "need" meat. OBVIOUSLY NOT!

  • I'm vegan and I respect what you're trying to do, but I just think that we should not have dogs as pets. That, or let them out in the woods and eat a rabbit or some game bird every now and then.

  • @itsMinuteMaid

    ????

  • @TrudyEdTech LOL i noe i was like wtf to that minute maid guys comment

  • hi, i am looking to make this meal for my dog but im finding it very difficult to find oat meal where i am. would it be ok to use porridge oats instead of the oat meal??

  • @steph4691 any oats will do if they are well cooked.

  • Humans should eat RAW fruits and Veggies... but dogs and cats are biologically evolved to eat meat..... soooooo i think this would be bad for them personally

  • thanks very much for the video. really brilliant and i know my dog will enjoy because she already loves eating some of my vegan spagetti boligniese or vegetable stew :) x

  • Dogs are carnivores. If they were meant to be vegan, they would have the digestive system and the jaw structure/teeth for it. Again, dogs are carnivores. I don't care if owners want to be vegan, but don't force your dogs to do it too. As their caretakers, we need to buck up and be responsible for them. We need to feed them a species appropriate diet. You can figure out what is best for them to eat by studying their anatomy. The conclusion? MEAT. The best way to go is PMR, not...vegan. Poor dogs.

  • @shamuluva

    1st: Dogs are omnivores.

We rescued our dogs because people abandoned them. That's sad..

We take very good care of them, they are our adopted kids. We cook our dogs fresh food, exercise and socialize them daily. They deserve to be healthy and happy.

There is a mountain of evidence that shows dogs can thrive on a balanced vegan diet.

This info is for people who want to feed their dogs a healthy vegan diet. One of the oldest dogs was vegan!

    Many cultures have veggie dogs.

  • I totally agree with you Trudy !!! My dogs used to be fed with normal dry food & oat or wheat bran....They used to take off the dry food and eat the cereals & oats.......They are more than 10 years old and have a shape of 2-3 years old, full of energy and so happy !!! I am a vegan, too and since then am feeling so good of not being part of the cruelty from farm & slaughters...... You need to realize and understand first what meet means.......and then make your decisions.....or stay indifferent ..

  • I think this was a great video, it should not have sparked so much debate, and I personally think that feeding a dog a vegan or vegetarian diet is just like a person who has a vegan or vegetarian diet.

  • also have you looked in to the benefits for the dog of eating a raw food died? for humans at least studies have shown that when we eat a diet of more then 50% cooked food our stomachs respond by bringing in white blood cells, like there was a pathogen in your body....

  • I know one vegan dog and it feels great. I would like to have vegan dog:DD

  • What did people just go completely nuts? Humans can survive on mainly vegetables, yes. But dogs evolved from grey wolfs, grey wolfs are equipped for taking down prey, the whole reason they were domesticated in the first place. And no there not omnivores. Supplementing some nutrients with a few grasses or fruits does not make them omvivores it makes them opportunists.

Another thing dogs guts arnt equpped to digest ruffage, and most will vomit if given most vegetables.

  • @zillatamer Yeah, humans did go completely nuts with breeding so many dogs and cats that over 9 million are killed in "shelters" every year! And you're getting yourself worked up because I feed my dogs food they like and is healthy for them, but you don't believe in! Get real!

Proper vegan diet is healthy and hearty for dogs. Exercise and socialization are important too.

  • You should never feed a dog onion or garlic. Not even sparingly

  • I have two golden retriever who are both 80+ lbs... one high 80'sone low 80's. I recently made the switch to a vegan diet for myself, and now am looking into the possibilities for my dogs. Currently they are fed a quality kibble that costs about $2.00 per day not including a few supplements. I'm wondering how much a vegan diet would cost to make (roughly speaking), and how many cups this recipe makes. I wouldn't want to be making it every day.

    Thanks!

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!

  • Google: Sun Warrior Protein

  • Wow, I wish somebody would take care of me like this. :)

    I can't even afford it.

  • I am interested in feeding my dogs vegan but everywhere i ask people say it's a bad idea and that they'll get very sick. prey model raw seems to be the in thing right now, but i am disgusted with factory farmed bactaria laden raw meat and I want to contribute to a more compassionate sustainable world but people i talk to on forums just tell me I will hurt my dogs, dogs are designed to eat meat. they get pretty aggressive about it.

  • @MsWanderingstar

There is a lot of misinformation out there about dog nutrition. It's mostly caused by marketing ideas that have been pushed by the pet food industry for decades. Home-cooked is just so good for dogs, and vegan dogs do great. Do your research and talk to people who are guardians of vegan dogs. I think you'll find that the more you actually learn, the less scary it is to take the plunge.

  • Still more healthy than a bag of dog kibble

  • What a fantastic example of what can be achieved with a little dedication. The meat industry is so cruel. it's good to know there is an alternative

  • wow....this is sooo off. You really need to do more research to really know what You are talking about. I'm sorry....but Dogs are NOT Vegan. I have tried this...it is NOT Natural for the Dog. I do encourage giving dogs whatever fresh raw foods that they will eat.

  • @saw241

No dogs are not natural, they are not vegan, and they are not dehydrated kibble eaters either. They are domesticated animals that eat what we feed them.

Dogs evolved eating human scraps, mostly vegan. In many countries, the idea of feeding dogs meat is ridiculous, they eat what the humans eat which is mostly vegetarian. Dogs do fine on vegan diets. The evidence is overwhelming that vegan dogs often are much healthier than commercial food eaters.

  • @TrudyEdTech damn good response! you kicked that dudes ass lol, great video too!

  • @TrudyEdTech dogs have only been domesticated for thousands of years... it takes millions to biologically evolve. Humans should eat mainly raw fruits and veggies, but its obvious by looking at a dogs teeth, they should eat MEAT

  • i dont want to be too rude, but why the heck would you make a dog vegan? evolution has dictated them to be mesocarnivores.

this is the first i heard of anybody turning a dog vegetarian and/or vegan

  • @dragon411320

Dogs eat what we feed them. They are totally dependent on us for that. So I feed my dogs healthy food that meets their needs and that they enjoy.

  • @TrudyEdTech Look no mean to offend you here, and I understand that your dogs are very healthy. But dogs are omnivores, not herbivores. They have evolved for eating mostly meat. Dogs that live off raw meat are a lot healthier than dogs that eat dog food.

  • @BlueGama600

And that's the opinion of a lot of people. You're entitled to your opinion.

However, most types of dogs do well on a vegan diet. It's well documented with EVIDENCE.

If you want to feed your dogs meat, that's fine. This is for vegan people who are interested in finding out the facts.

  • @dragon411320 My friend has two 25-year-old Huskies. They've been feed vegan diet their whole life.

  • you're an inspiration! this was so awesome and informative. i'm a vegan & hope to transition my pups into it too! thank you. :)

  • I just wanted to say I LOVE this video!!! Such great information!! I was just going to feed my dogs a vegetarian dog food diet, but after seeing this video, a vegan diet seems better!!

Also, how much would I feed my 25 lb. EXTREMELY high activity dog? Agility, frisbee, etc. EVERY DAY!!! Thanks soooo much!!!

  • @cattledogagility101

We have active dogs as well, and find that we have to adjust the high calorie/ protein food with the fats and calories, depending on their activity levels. For more calories, protein and fats, we add more of the flax seed, sunflower and sesame meal to their diet. When they are not as active, we decrease those foods and add more legumes and rice and barley. It's nice to adjust when your dog is gaining and needs less food.

Overfeeding is usually the issue for most dogs.

  • @cattledogagility101

Amount of food we feed to our 30 pound terrier is approximately two to three cups of the food, once a day in the evening for supper.

  • I'm a vegan and I'm going to be getting my first dog in spring time, hopefully a puppy/young dog, definitely a rescue. I want to try my best to have my dog on a vegan diet, but ultimately, if it doesn't work out, I won't hesitate to do what's best for her health. I just wanted to say that this video is extremely helpful, thank you for making it :]

  • @heartofpixels

Thanks for commenting! It's good to have an open mind about what to feed your best friend.

There is so much disinformation out there around this issue. Often, if you go back far enough, there is a money trail. The pet food industry makes a lot of money and has a vested interest in "educating" folks about what's best for their companions. I'm sure there are some good pre-made foods, but I cooking human-grade food for my guys is a wonderful way to ensure the quality of their foods.

  • hi umm really like dis video and i just got a new puppie shes 3 months old and i just feed her caned peas and corn and pasta so i was hoping if u could give me some vege food recipes and where i can buy dis food in sydney thanks

  • @lilgangstar123

Make sure your puppy is getting the proper nutrients! It sounds like the diet is way too high in carbs. Check with your vet.

  • I used to feed my dogs the really expensive bagged kibble and canned food, so yes, cooking for my dogs is inexpensive, just considering the cost of the foods. It costs us much less to feed fresh food at home.

Of course you have to consider the time, but for us, it's definitely worth it to have total control of the ingredients in their food. They're our babies and we want them to have the best food!

  • is this is less expensive diet for dogs?

  • your touching delicate ground when putting a carnivorous species on a vegan diet. Animal cruelty in my book

  • @cain3773

What are you basing your comments on? Have you done much research?

There have been vegetarian dogs for as long as there have been dogs. They do great. Dogs are omnivores in the order Carnivora.

Pandas are also in the order Carnivora and are herbivores, by the way.

There are a lot of misconceptions out there, based mostly on lack of knowledge.
